EPILOGUE

Librarian Brenda Elendt perished in the fire. Official reports said faulty wiring in the basements of the library. Only a few of us knew of the woman's true manical nature ... including the spirit of Clark Neuwirth.
The secret of the lost books died with her.
Except for the stack Dorothy had stolen out, given to Cassandra Neuwirth to do with as she saw fit. I expect the university to be turned upsidedown within a few days if she decides to share what she reads.
Myself, I am somewhat relieved the past had perished with the madness of Brenda Elendt. Absolute power may corrupt, but petty power corrupts absolutely ...

Roger stood outside on the balcony, the warmness of a sunset filtering through the clouds to the west of Paradigm City.

One of his suspender straps slipped down his shoulder as he shifted his weight to lean on the railing.

"What are you thinking, Roger?" Dorothy's voice asked behind him.

He continued staring at the horizon. "Dwelling on something is a sign of old age, Dorothy."

She approached the balcony, leaping up to stand beside him. She was still clad in the short black dress, the skirt hugging her thighs tightly. "I do not understand, Roger."

"Brenda Elendt ... she dwelled on Clark's betrayal, using it as an excuse to withhold information ... In the end, it killed her."

Dorothy was silent, then finally said, "Ms. Elendt had loved Professor Neuwirth at one time ... and he took advantage of her."

Roger shrugged. "I make no excuses for my mentor."

Both gazed quietly at the fading cloud-sunset.

"Dorothy?"

"Yes, Roger?"

He inhaled deeply. "What did I ask you when I was drunk?"

Her eyes remained fastened on the horizon. "You asked me to marry you."

He stood up, blinking. "I what?"

Dorothy turned her head to look at him. "You had asked, I quote verbatim, 'Dora-girl, will you marry me?' Then you passed out again."

Roger leaned back on the railing again.

It was only a few weeks ago they had ran into the Fitzgeralds ... Senator Roscoe Fitzgerald - android - married to Kelly Fitzgerald - human - for well over the forty years since The Event.

The death of R. Roscoe Fitzgerald hit him harder than he thought, blending into the depression over Professor Clark Neuwirth's death, and into the drunk of last night.

And he asked Dorothy to marry him.

He could repeal ... from what she had said earlier, she did not expect him to be serious once he was sober. And she had every right to believe that. It was something Roger Smith did not say.

But ... something felt ... right ... Even now when he was sober, he could feel deep down in his body that asking her to marry him felt right. Probably the only time in his life when anything felt right at all.

"Dorothy?" he said, feeling his heart beating in his chest like a trip hammer. "Can you turn to face me?"

She did so, looking down at him from the railing.

Roger stepped back, reaching for her hand. He gripped it tightly, her firm android flesh cool to the touch. "Dorothy, I want to ask you again ... will you, Dorothy Wayneright, marry me?"

She gazed down at him, then a smile blossomed over her face, making her warm and alive. "I accept, Roger Smith." She hopped down from the railing and embraced him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her cheek against chest. "I love you, Roger. You finally noticed what was in front of you."

Roger exhaled, realizing he had been holding his breath. He drew his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. "Love you, Dora-girl."

We Have Come to Terms
