CHAPTER NINETEEN

One of the monitors in Big O flickered onto an outside camera.

Roger flipped a few switches. "Bring them in, Big O."

One of Big O's hands scooped up the trio and guided them into one of the elevator shafts leading up to the cockpit.

A minute later, as Big O broke the street pavement, the three entered the cockpit.

"Welcome aboard," Roger stated.

Dastun looked around the cockpit and noted Roger in the control chair. "For some reason, I thought it would be smaller."

Roger chuckled. "Still figuring it out. A.I. Dorothy said something was awakening under the city and told me to come here first." He glanced at his passengers. "Take care of Angel, she's bleeding."

Gordon remained silent.

"It's the monster," Angel gasped. "Vera called up a monster."

"All right, folks," Roger stated. "This is going to be messy, so I'm dropping you off."

"No problem, Roger," Dastun answered. "I need to get Angel to a hospital."

Gordon opened his mouth.

"Keep an eye on Rosewater, will you, Dan?" Roger asked. "At least until Norman can pick him up. Alex thinks he's dead, so we need all the trump cards we can get."

"Fine," Dastun confirmed. "Where do we go?"

"Down that shaft," Roger answered, pointing to an opening circular panel on the floor. "The elevator will take you down to the garage. You can leave out of Big O's foot. And I suggest you take her to Radinova's clinic."

"Will do."

Dastun carried Angel and pulled Gordon behind him onto the small elevator. When they disappeared into the floor and the door closed, Roger looked up at his opponent.

The Megadeus opposing them was a huge hulk, a metal shell and the Megadeus face minus its faceplate. It was three times as long as the Prairie Dog. Yellow armor covered its back. The front limbs were drills nearly twice the height of Big O in length, while cannons poked out from limbs and the body at various locations.

"What is that thing?" Roger asked in awe. "It's a huge tank!"

The main monitor displayed a middle-aged woman leaning askance in her control seat, breathing hard. It was obvious from her broken right wrist and broken left arm that she was in pain.

"Roger Smith?" she gasped. "I see you on my monitor - you really are the Dominus of Big Omega once again?"

"Just as you were the Machina of Big Dual, Vera Ronstadt," he answered.

She cackled, even though it made her breathless. "Who would have known a Dominus and Machina could go into battle against each other? If that bastard Seebach had waited for the Union to finish organizing, he would have had an army at his disposal to find the truth and the memories. Instead, he stole Duo before the time was ripe. He lost his life as a result." Her broken arm's fingers reached for the code keys. "No more talk, Smith! We now have a world to destroy and a new one to build!"

"Wait, Ronstadt - "

"This city is cursed - and I will strike a curse on you, Roger Smith!"

She spat toward her camera, then slammed her fist on a control panel. Roger's monitor was filled with static.

Roger sighed, then maneuvered Big O into battle stance. "All right, we'll play it your way, Ronstadt."

He studied the tactical monitor and saw the schematics of Behemoth flash across the screen. Heat signatures appeared at the pulse cannon locations.

He slammed Big O's foot down on the street.

Big O dropped down under the pavement just as a series of laser pulses shot off where his head and chest cavity were just a second ago. A could of smoke shot up through the hole, drifting around the sensors of the monster Megadeus.

"WHERE ARE YOU, SMITH?!" Vera's voice shrieked over the comm. "HOW ARE YOU JAMMING MY SENSORS?!"

Roger pushed Big O through the tunnels. "That thing is too big to be allowed to roam the city, so - "

Big O erupted through the street beneath Behemoth, lifting the huge Megadeus above his head.

A gigantic broken girder dropped out of the sky right on the main bulk of Behemoth, shattering it in Big O's grasp. Vera's scream tore through the speakers in Big O's cockpit, then all was silent.

Big O immediately released the shattered pieces of Behemoth. "What the hell??" Roger looked with amazement at the almost-mile-long length of steel girder that had apparently fell out of nowhere.

A beeping sound came from the computer and Roger glanced down at the monitor.

'To Roger Smith - From AI Dorothy, Paradigm Mainframe.
Big Dual has destroyed himself on Schwarzwald's orders. According Dual's last messages, they had discovered an even larger dome over all of the Known World.'

He sat silently.

"All of the Known World," Roger repeated. Big O's face looked up to the sky as Roger gazed upward through the cockpit window.
