Eve of the Hurricane
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Angel had collapsed into a chair, dazed and confused by everything around her. The soup in her mother's stockpot smelled tart and savory, just like her mother's soups always did. The chair had that uneven leg that always bothered her as she grew up. The room looked completely and utterly natural, save for the fact that one wall was missing ... and for the life of her, she could not remember what was on that wall.
"Is this possible?" Angel asked the silence. "But this is ... How can this be? My mother? My home?"
After several more moments, a throat-clearing sound came from behind her. Angel turned and gazed upon Gordon Rosewater sitting at the table, his hat off his head and appearing to be asleep.
"Gordon Rosewater," she said, allowing herself to smile. "You are truly the King of Paradigm City - the city of deceptions."
He awoke, grunted, then looked up at her. "Would you, unnn, hurry up and serve me that tomato stew? I'm really very hungry."
Angel's brows knotted in confusion. "What?"
One of the set doors opened and Angel turned to it, her gun drawn.
"Welcome home," a female voice with a thick accent called. Vera stepped into the room, smirking harshly. "My angel!"
"You - !" The gun trained on the older woman's face.
Vera laughed hoarsely, closing the door behind her. "I guess there's 'no place like home'. Your favorite line from your favorite book, wasn't it, Agent 340?" Vera paused before a bookshelf and picked up the 'Oz' volume in question, tossing it on the table in front of Gordon. "Happy memories we had here, my baby, with all those books!"
"Agent 12? Vera Ronstadt? You're supposed to be my mother?" Angel seethed. "How dare you shame my mother like this!"
Vera remained impassive, the smirk never leaving her face as she approached Angel. "What is this city? The thought of this ridiculous room being here makes me laugh." She moved on.
"What are you talking about?" Angel asked plainly, her eyes narrowing.
"Look at this pathetic old man," Vera said, indicating Gordon sitting quietly. "That Oedipus-wannabe son of his even tried to kill him!"
"Wouldn't you say it's about time the tomato stew was ready?" Gordon asked.
Vera ignored him, staring into space. "Ah, I have to say that this city is so lovely."
Gordon got up, making his way to the stove. "I'm so hungry ... "
A whip suddenly appeared in Vera's hand, snapping in his line of vision. Gordon gasped, then backed away to his chair again.
"Father!" Vera scolded him like a small child. "Mind your manners!"
Angel's mouth dropped open.
* * *
Roger stood with Dorothy at the control console, listening to the military police scanner. Below them in the hangar, Norman and his crew worked on repairing Big O's damaged faceplate and ribcage.
'Anti-aircraft fire on invaders,' someone called into the radio, the background filled with explosions which could be heard outside.
'Don't let them drop any bombs!' another voice snapped. 'Get them fast!'
'Bomb dropped! Hit it!'
The bomb impacted by the missile in midair made the floor tremble beneath their feet.
Tami - being held in Roger's arms - squeezed his neck and buried her face into his big shoulder.
"'The power of God, created by Man'," Roger quoted. "'Divine thunder raining down from the heavens'."
"Like the end of the world," Dorothy said softly.
"Not yet, Mommy," Tami murmured into Roger's shoulder.
