CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Norman was still surprised by the sudden recollection of the lost mannerisms of his youth (or what he assumed them to be).

"They're a thousand yards away, sir," Norman stated. "Would you care for some target practice while they're still at a distance?"

"Sounds good," Roger answered, hefting up the rifle.

Norman grabbed his own and both made their way out of the penthouse and to the balcony, looking down the street toward the 'drones' Beck had referred to.

Roger thought for a brief second of what he was doing, reminding himself that he was defending his pregnant wife and their new daughter. He let the thought sink in as he lifted the scope to his eye and aimed at one of the scorpion-designed robots.

God, I have a family to protect.

He put the rifle down and dashed into the house.

"Master Roger?" Norman inquired, following him back in.

"I have a family to protect, Norman! We have a giant robot - we should use it!"

Norman nodded. "Very good, sir."

Roger took the shortcut through the kitchen chute and ran across the hangar. "Big O - showtime!"

* * *

The scorpion drones skittered as the ground beneath them rumbled, then erupted under them, sending them into flight and slamming into the sides of buildings.

"Come on!" Roger roared as Big O appeared in the middle of the street. "You have to fight me first before you get anywhere near my wife!"

The drones turned, then charged the black Megadeus.

Big O's eyes shot lasers along the lines of robots, melting them in their path. A few hopped out of the way.

Several of the robots skittered toward the mansion, away from the Megadeus. One by one, they exploded into shrapnel as fifty-calibre explosive warheads slammed into them.

After fifteen of them were stopped in that fashion, Norman nodded to himself, put down the rifle, and retired to the control room. Most of the drones were attacking Big O, so the threat was minimal. He could handle it easier from there.

* * *

Dorothy and Tami joined Norman at the control console, gazing at the monitors showing the fight between Big O and the scorpions.

"I see Roger decided to take matters into his own hands," Dorothy observed.

Tami was hopping from one leg to the other, giggling. "KICK THEIR BUTTS, DAD!"

"Tami Smith ... "

She looked up at Dorothy who was smiling down at her. Tami's eyes filled with tears even though her grin was threatening to split her face open.

"Will Daddy or Omega need our help?"

"No, Miss Tami," Norman answered. "But I would appreciate if you would eat your breakfast."

Dorothy chuckled quietly. Norman's coolness under pressure was one of his many admirable traits.
