The Cutie Honey Thread!

Well, the other day I got my Cutie Honey DVD in the mail. It's a region 2 release, so it was pretty expensive and had no subtitles. But even without subtitles, it was easy to tell what was going on. So far I've watched pretty much every episode on the two discs. So what did I think? It was awesome. The audio and picture was outstanding. I don't know how Toei made such an old show look so great. The picture looks just a good as my Big O DVDs! The audio too was really good. But the picture, wow. The opening song is same as New Cutey Honey, Flash, and Re: just of course a different singer (She sounds older o.o) The animation of course is VERY dated. The series is older than even Lupin.
The story itself is simple and fun. It deals with the Panther Claw who wish to defeat Honey, and to please Panther Claw. There are 25 memebers of the Panther Claw (aside from Sister Jill and Zora) most are animal themed. (Butterfly Claw, Fire Claw, Black Claw) The characters include Honey of course, Seiji Hayami, Junpei Hayami, and Danbei Hayanmi. Also, Honey seems to be very bad in school. She's always trying to get out! (Who can blame her? Miharu-Sensei is a cold beeyoutch, and Ms. Alphonne has the hots for Honey!)
And Honey of course has lots of different forms in this show. Misty Honey (Singer), Hurricane Honey (Biker), a Mermaid, a clown, a street bum, and even a Charlie Chaplin lookalike! Yep, for no reason at all Honey decided to transform into Charlie Chaplin while running from some Panther Claw Minions!
Below is the main menus:
One choice is a version, with a short opening, no ending, and a short 'next episode preview'. The other one is the full oringal episode.

Well, from the screenshots and the pans you made over at the Anime Pans thread, it does look pretty nice. It's too bad that it haven't been distributed in the US yet. Well, for an old series, it's very nice. I'll have to look into it sometime.

I really wish ADV would pick it up (Along with Flash, and Re:Cutie Honey) but I guess because it's so old, they've decided to bring it over. Sad really. I feel since they licensed 'New Cutey Honey', they should bring over
ALL the series.
Anyways, here are more screencaps:
The two woman at the bottom are Miharu-sensei, and Alphonne-sensei. (Alphone is the one with the moustance)

as a fan of Cutie Honey, I needs to see me this. I've always heard about the original, but I've never actually seen it. it looks really good. I love the 70s anime look... it suits Cutie Honey well.

That's rather silly. lots of good anime has nudity. It's different over there, Nudity isn't a "bad" thing like it is here, and they can show it on TV. (Look at Ranma 1/2, huge hit on TV over there)
Infact... Cutie Honey was originally for girls anyway.

You know, I would feel that way for say um, Battle Vixens, or Love Hina but Cutie Honey is different. Yes, she gets naked alot (surprisly not that much in this old series.) but it's not JUST about the naked. I've seen the oringal, New Cutey Honey, and Re:Cutie Honey. And yes they have nudity, but they are also very fun, and are quite enjoyable. The characters are really cool too.
For example, Daiko and Akakaku from New Cutey Honey are two crazy parents. They always love stealing stuff. One episode, The Jewel Princess (don't ask) throws a diamond at Danbei (the old man) knocking him out. Everyone is worried, but Daiko just pushes everyone out of the way just to get the diamond. (XD) And to this day, this is the ONLY anime I've seen where a dirty old man is a worthless annoying character.
Plus, Cutie Honey opended out a whole new thing for manga/anime. Magical Girls, and it showed that girls or rather, Cutie Honey could kick as much ass as Rainbow Man, or whatever older male superhero.

Yes, nudity in'st
as bad as it is here. However, Japan still has TV guidelines. One of the reasons I think the old series of Cutie Honey had no so much nudity, or had nipple-less nudity was because of the fact when it aired. (Which I think was primetime)

Now, I wouldn't say that. Girls liked it, but as far as I know the manga was pretty shonen. The anime I guess (oringial) maybe since I heard it was toned down from the manga. However, Cutey Honey Flash is a series that was targetted towards young girls.

Actually, the "New Cutey Honey" series they did market alot towards kids. I am led to believe the original was too by cast interviews which included one of the cast saying something about "Watching the original as a little girl". And they attended events to hand out freebies and swag to Japanese children.
(I've never seen the Manga btw, I should look for it when I go to the Japanese bookstore next time. most of my Cutie Honey knowlede is based on the Series that was realeased in 1994)
and I wouldn't say girls like the nudity, just don't mind or they aren't bothered by it would be more accurate.

While, like I said girls most likely did like it. But I think Go Nagai was reaching out to a more shonen target. Although, I think Cutie Honey was made to be a more of a 'kid/teen friendly show'. (the anime from the 70's that is)
Now, when I saw 'Honeys' gave out free videos to kids I was surprised! XD I thought New Cutey Honey was an OVA because it targetted a more mature group (Hence the tons of violence, and nudity that they couldn't really show on TV).

I kinda think Go Nagai was also out to please himself a little. it was very.. much like everything else he's ever created in the character department. but, that's a thread for another time.
Over there, they tend to relase alot of OVAs for Creative freedom and other various reasons other than just to keep it out of the hands of kids. (Which I am sure is also the case for stuff like.. Oh I dunno... Urotsukidoji)
I actually remember when Cutey Honey was relased originally in Japan there was a big deal in some older Anime magazines about how perverted it is and the fact that they were targetting it towards japanese kids. So of course, being 14 that gave me enough reason to want to see it lmao. I've wanted to see the original Ever since, especially after seeing those screens you posted. it looks great.

I wonder if that's the reason, New Cutey Honey's sales went down and, or because of it ending the way it did.

Joking earlier, of course...
It sounds like a fun show. I'll try checking it out some time when the monetary situation improves *hopefully*. The screen caps look surprisingly good considering the age of the series as well. ::impressed::

I finally have seen the first episode of Cutie Honey! I Really Enjoyed it.
I think I may like it better than the other versions so far. (Re: Cutie Honey being in Second)
The only thing I Dont like is the theme song. Well the vocalist. I much prefer the newer version!
