I honestly don't know why either.
Perhaps some people can't handle unflipped Manga. I don't have a preference either way, but flipping causes some amusing errors (Like "MAY" becoming "YAM").

Heads up!
Volume 1 is reported to be out! I repeat, Viz swerved us!
Addendum: To prevent double posting, I'm just going to put it here.
1: I got the Manga, it OWNS.
2: Yes, virgina, it's out.
3: Who got it?

Since the first volume is out, and those interested probably have the Manga, let's get crackin. What did you guys think?

Since this thread has been quiet, I thought I'd let those interested know that Vol 2 of the Read or Die manga is released in May. Just to give everyone the heads-up.

Braved the rigors of a Minnesota thunderstorm to get Volume 3 of the Read or Die manga series. This truely gets things moving as it is as thick of a read as the first volume, and really sends you for a ride. You'll even have to re-read a couple things to catch on to some nuances that may not show in the first reading.
And it seems Barnes and Noble like to get their Manga in Earlier than Viz's posting of dates. It may also be that most bookstores that carry Manga beat out specialty stores in this aspect.
Weird.
Meh, enough of my bookwormy rantings. Get it. Read it.
Oh, and another thing. Viz just picked up the Read or Dream manga series. Read or Dream leads into R.O.D the TV.
Just... thought I'd let that cat out of the bag.
Book dates are always an approximate. I rely more on the month part of the release date, than the day part.

What I go by is the assumed fact that Viz releases books 1 month before the release date. R.O.D vol 3 was due in July by their reckoning, so I figured a June date.

Well, Volume 4 of Read or Die is out, and the first volume of Read or Dream as well.
Read or Dream is a definate departure from Read or Die in the fact that it is lighter fare (for the most part). Not to mention it feels a bit more Shoujo than Read or Die.
But these aren't negatives, oh no. Not by any means, fellow bibliomaniacs. And just to note, Read or Dream volume two should be out in a couple months, so get prepared.

Read or Dream is lighter on the action, and it is more Shoujo in feeling, but it's still wonderful.
As great as the mangas are, I still feel we need the novels stateside.

somehow i kinda got surprised when joker became dismembered by his hands. felt a relief when i saw his new cyborg hands at the ends.

Actually from what it looked like, the gloves were more for protection. Joker probably got clone-vat produced hands. Also the cut was pretty much past the wrists, so any scars would be under the cuff.
And yes, we need those Novels. They are the secret to completely unraveling the plot.
Also... Volume 2 of Read or Dream is out. Get it. It's a fun read, no doubt about it.

Well, Volumes 3 and 4 of Read or Dream are out.
I haven't been able to really update this (since I'm weaving myself into a R.O.D community, that is in desperate straights at the moment.) so I'll begin by giving my opinion of Volume 3....
3 is... Different. I sort of knew that Read or Dream was a different continuity than the TV series, and man, I wasn't wrong.
Let's put it this way, Dream is quite a trip down a strange road at times. Sometimes funny, sometimes surreal, and occasionally paved in fan-service.
Am I saying don't buy the series? No, your the ultimate judge as to if somethign is good. I am just saying Read or Dream is almost a different animal to the R.O.D multiverse.
So... just be prepared for something completely different.
