Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII

There's an article on IGN now about the Compilation of FFVII, as well as the future of Final Fantasy on the Playstation 3. It give minute details about Advent Children, but also talks about the rest of the Compilation (Crisis Core and, mostly, Dirge of Cerebrus).

Talking a bit about the storyline for Cerberus, Kitase explains that because Vincent, the main character of the game, was an optional character in Final Fantasy VII, much of his background story was left out during the development of that title. He's also a very popular character even today, according to Kitase, which is why he wanted to make a game that properly dealt with him.

Providing a hint of the quality that we can expect from Cerberus, Kitase reveals that the game's event and movie sequences will be at "FF Quality." In terms of volume, we can look forward to something at the level of Final Fantasy X.

The genre for Dirge of Cerberus is "Gun Action RPG." Kitase explains that, as a fan of Half Life, he originally wanted to make the game into a first person shooter. However, his aim was a different kind of FPS. One area of difference involves RPG elements, and while he states that he cannot be too specific at the moment, there will be a command menu that will give an RPG feel to the title. Dengeki asks if you'll be able to select abilities and materia from this menu, and Kitase responds, with a laugh, that it's something like that.

It can be found here.

Even after a climatic battle with Sephiroth and the collision of the legendary spells Meteor and Holy, the details of Final Fantasy VII's conclusion remain somewhat ambiguous. However, amid the questions and untold tales, there is one thing that is certain: The city of Midgar was destroyed - though its story is still far from over.

As part of what Square Enix has dubbed the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII", Dirge of Cerberus elaborates on the events steming from Sephiroth's defeat by following Vincent as he re-enters the industrial wreckage of Midgar. His mission is to combat the world's newest threat - violent and crazed soldiers, formerly employed by Shinra, who survived for years trapped underneath the rubble of the once-thriving city.

Of course, to handle these aggressive and militaristic foes, Vincent will be leaving his turn-based ways behind in favor of some big guns and frantic firing. Yoshinori Kitase, the game's producer tells us "We wanted to make it something like Escape from New York. The whole city of Midgar is overrun with crazy survivors, and you have to fight through them." Throughout this third person shooter adventure, players will be able to use a variety of different weapons and skills. Though many of tools at Vincent's disposal are still a mystery, we can only hope that his unique ability to transform into terrifying abominations will make an appearence. "You'll have to wait for more information on that." Kitase teases.

Thankfully, Dirge won't be completely abandoning its roots in favor of twitchy shooting. "There is an emphasis on both the story and the gunplay," explains Kitase. "We want to create something that will appeal not only to an action fan, but aslo RPG fans." As such, players can expect to learn more about Vincent's shadowy past, including his time with the Turks, his history with the scientist Hojo, and his relationship with Lucreita.

Though only confirmed as a single-player expereince, Dirge's action-oriented gameplay seems ideal for multiplayer and online options as well. Kitase was reluctant to reveal any specifics about these possibilities, but he did confirm that we have a great deal to learn about Dirge of Cerberus: "Look forard to hearing more about the game's other features in the furture," he tells us. "We want to make a product that will appeal to people right away, and then surprise them.

New DC Scan
Next week's issue of Jump (#35) features some new shots of Dirge of Cerberus, and some information on 3 characters. First is Reeve Tuesti, Cait Sith's controller and now leader of the World Restoration Organization (W.R.O), it seems his is being attacked by someone. The second is Azul, the giant Deep Ground SOLDIER who also appears in Before Crisis. In DC he seems to have gained a new barrier skill he didn't have in BC. And third is a mysterious ninja, in a white mage-like robe and armed with a giant shuriken (which also seems to have a pink ribbon on). They seem to be overly friendly with Vincent, so it could be Yuffie.

Also featured on the scan is an introduction to the three different types of guns Vincent can use (handgun, machine gun and rifle), and an online multiplayer mode where you can challenge others over a network, play as a Deep Ground SOLDIER and fight in teams. A web address is given, but the site doesn't seem to be up yet.
