One Step Nearer a Color-Changing Griffon

John Paczkowski in Silicon Valley Today reports that Apple has applied for a
patent on a
device that can change its appearance. While this version appears to use LEDs under the outer shell of a computer's monitor, perhaps a similar idea could lead to color-changing cars, like the Griffon in "Beck Comes Back."

I owndered what the big o refrence waas, till you said about a clour changing car.
I wonder if this tech will be used in the new iMac

Wow. Makes me wonder how much a color-changing car would cost....not to mention how expensive it'd be to repair the LED after a fender bender!
If I had the money, I'd spring for one of those MACs...

What I wouldn't do for the Griffon! It would be awesome to have a color-changing car. I'd also like all of the other goodies.... but those are a little more unrealistic...

If you can afford the car, you can afford the repairs. . .

Really?
Wait, it's a Mac, I've already lost interest.

That sounds really cool! I hope that Apple can make that work. I would love to change the color of Mac depending on my mood.
But adding that technology to a car? Hmmm.... wouldn't the cops like that one?

I am much more interested in the military aspects of this device...

Yeah, I think the police will love the idea of this technology on cars.
I don't see it happening for cars...at least not in the commonplace auto market.

I hope this never makes it to car market due to the hell it could cause for law enforcement.

Ha, but for someone like me it would be perfect

I'll wager most of you have seen the dyes that change color with heat. There's liquid crystals, like those used in strip thermometers and mood rings, and then there's leucodyes.
I found a paper on thermochanging inks which might explain how the Griffon could change color so quickly. With a black leucodye covering a red base coat, heating the surface of the car would let it change color.

That is a good explination! (Sorry I can't add much to that, writer's block).

I'd love a Griffon, it's so cool! Not very practical in England though... It'd have to be smaller than THE Griffon.
I thought I saw one once, I kinda guess it wasn't but it looked like one, I don't think the Griffon would have fit down that street... But I really can't be sure, it's hard to focus on a car when you've just run into it's side... (I wasn't in anouther car at the time I might add, just running bare foot down the middle of the road 'cos my friend was trying to beat me up... I think it was 'cos I wouldn't shutup about Big O...)Needless to say I ran straight back up the road, tackled her, scrambled to my feet and ran after the car (it was a strange loop road), and afterwards (sometimes still) I wouldn't stop talking about the Griffon.
Well... That was strange, I didn't mean to type that story up...

Don't worry, something similar is being worked on for clothing for soldiers, I read about this a while ago but I don't have a link right now, I'll try to look it up.

Haha, I bet they would
More-than-likely, if they do make color changing cars, you'd probably be required to register the colors your car would be.
Also, I would also like to add in that the Griffon is one sexy car. Like the person who drives it. ... <3

However much I love the idea of being one step closer to a real Griffon, think of the hell it would cause for law inforcement.
Imagine - A car chase, where the cops and the culprit keep changing car color!
"The culprit's been seen in a white ... wait, no, red ... yellow ... purple ... wait! Wait! It's white agai - OH CRIMONY!"

yeah, it might be annoying, but it's not like the license plate and the model of the car would be able to change. As far as I've heard, police don't put too much stock in car color anyway, given how many different ways there are to describe it - mauve, vermillon, scarlet, plum, wine-red, ect. I think it'd be a VERY frivolous thing, but it's still a very cool idea.

It would be really cool to have color changing walls. Push a button and the room changes color, no more sticky paint trays or cleaning rollers. What would be really, really cool would be LED wall paper. Push a button and change your wall paper. Oh the possibilities!

So forgive me if I over looked it already so has thise idea even been put through testing onto the cars yet or are they still a while from that? And is the color changing due to climate or is it progrmaed so that you can decide the color your self?
