PCF's Official "Lord of the Rings" Discussion Thread

Big Grin Finally. The thread I've been waiting for!

So... It's been a while since last December, but let us strike up the conversation over LOTR once more! There is oodles to talk about, and I'll get it started with something simple.

I've read the books three times through. I know what's missing and what isn't. But the first person who starts complaining about, "notombombadil", or "noglorifindel", or "thiswasn'tthere", or "thatwasn'ttthere", will most certainly get be pushed off a cliff into a deep ravine filled with starving PEFs and fanboys, or struck down by Manwë or another equally-as-upset Vala, or will be bound and gagged and forced to watch the cartoon instead.

Just thought I'd put that out there. And before I leave you to start in on the fray, I'll quickly, quickly put in my two cents.

Best movies ever. Return of the King rocks like no tomorrow, I love Sam more than Spike, Roger, and Black Jack combined (then multiplied exponentially by nine million), and Peter Jackson is my new god.

But there was no Tom Bombadil! Tongue

Anyway, amen to the last paragraph (though I'm not quite sure about making Mr. Jackson my next god)...

I hope Christopher Tolkien allows for a Hobbit movie to be made...I'll be really disappointed if he doesn't (the old animated one isn't too bad, though)...

I was thinking about that yesterday, and how eternally awesome it would be if they did. What with all the amazing CG, think of how wicked Smaug would look! And I would love to see McKellen reprise his role as Gandalf again, too. That would be a real treat! Big Grin

I believe the problem with making a movie of 'The Hobbit' is more to do with the rights. MGM and New Line need to sort something out (listen to the lawyers printing their money).

Incidentaly I was slightly disappointed that 'Scouring of the Shire' was missed off the film - I supose it would have made the film even longer. Thats my own opinion.

Anyway I'll make do my CD's of the radio series of both 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. A little bit of Trivia here - Ian Holm, who played Bilbo in the films, also played Frodo in the radio series. The radio series also had Tom Bombadil cut out. The radio series was first broadcast on Sunday March 8th 1981.

I hope they don`t have intentions of going & making "The Hobbit,"
movie. Honestly. It just won`t work. The book is good, why doesn`t
everyone get off their lazy arses & away from their darned computers
& read the book ??

I liked it .

All the books are good - I'd recommend reading some of the other middle earth books as well - 'The Silmarillion' for instance. Even the appendicies of 'The Lord of the Rings' are interesting as it fills in alot of the background history.

The films are good, but nothing can beat the book as its difficult to bring a book to film at best, impossible at worse. A film can enhance a books read - or completely destroy it.

Nothing can beat the books though.

When I first read the LOTRs books in my Freshmen year in high school I couldn't put them down, I was glad that I had lots of chances to read them after I had finished early in class. Barrin own the Fellowship, Two Towers, and King but I own a nice cpoy of The Hobbit. I Think I read The Hobbit after the other three books but I adored it, wish I could find it and put it on my bookselve.Embarrassed Sweatdrop When Barrin does find this tread I can almost promise he will post.

Overall, if we pretend the books don't exist (I know, blasphemy! But just humor me here) they were great.

Comparing them alongside the books, they were still good, just I don't understand why Jackson did some of the things he did.

The Fellowship is my favorite, Two Towers was pretty good though I think the Helm's Deep battle was boring (despite thousands of soldiers and whatnot, yawn) and Return of the King was dangerously close to "What kind of pipeweed was Jackson smoking?" quality. The ending was terrible and way too long and drawn out.

I think the choices for actors was well done (Christopher Lee was awesome as Saruman), the character and creature designs were sweet (Gollum and the Ring Wraiths were my favs), and the music was top notch.

I am looking foward to the extened edition of King coming out this winter!

My favorite book out of them all was The Hobbit and I definitely wouldn't mind a film. I don't think the animated version was bad, (it was one of my childhood favorites actually) but a Peter Jackson film would be wonderful. Smile

I picked up The Silmarillion at the library a year or two ago. I thought it was extremely interesting, not just for the content but how it was written. It starts off in a relatively similar matter to The Holy Bible, there is nothing but the god, then we witness him create life and earth. As it progresses it begins to read more like Greek mythological stories. All in all a very good read.

I think Peter Jackson definitely wins the Most Loving Adaptation award. It managed to keep the story mostly intact despite all the effects and money that were thrown at it. (But I hate Bakshi, so he didn't have much competition.)

As far as the film studio's respect for the book goes:

I can almost swallow the Arwen Navel Ring...it's the Saruman Navel Ring that is a little...odd.

WHAT? This WINTER?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. (I need a release date! I told mom to wait on buying the immediate release-two disk- becaue they'd just rip her off when they released the five disk set) So yeah, anyone have a date?

My mom and I are talking about doing an extended editions marathon. We had a theater (by one of the biggest malls around here...) play all three, extended, for one day (OVER 9 HOURS!). I didn't know anyone that went though, we were amazed though...they sold out almost immediately.

I still haven't read the books, but I think the movies were AWESOME! I think they are some of the greatest movies I have EVAR seen. (Yes, I spelled Ever wrong...I wanted effect Tongue ).

My mom, cousin, bro, and I all think that if The Hobbit were to be done, Peter Jackson better do it. I totally think it would rock and also, he would keep in the tradition of the Lord of the Rings films.

Well, Peter Jackson was meant to do this. (I haven't seen his other stuff, but mom has and she didn't like it.) But, yeah, he was meant to do these and I'd hate to see anyone else do The Hobbit except him.

9 hours...lol, more than 9 hours with the extended and breaks! Tongue

As to a website, last I checked Amazon, they didn't have any date up, so I don't know where you're really refering me to (unless you mean "The official movie site" or IMDB.com...haven't gone there...but I find Amazon really good.)

Thanks for the UK release date. That confirms they're going to try and get Christmas sales (Not bad when it comes to making money). In the U.S. it'll probably be about the same time...

Well my sister is the big LOTR fan at my house and she knows everything about the books. She even knows elvish and can basicly tell you whats happening on every page of the book without looking. Its pritty scary. The one thing that I didn't like about Return Of The King was the ending. I mean you don't even see the hobits free the Shire from Saroman. I was alittle disappointed.
aeternus_flammus 08-08-2004 08:54 PM
A marathon of all three extended editions would be more like 11 hrs. with no breaks. As for the release date . . . winter, that's all I've found.
