Favorite Film by Studio Ghibli

Terrific news! More people need to see these films and see that anime is not just giant robots and fan service, and that cartoons are not just Satruday morning commericals or Disney flicks.
As for favorite Ghibli film, maaaan, that's tough.
I'd say Spirited Away for the shear magic, with a close second going to Princess Mononoke for amazing animation and action sequences.
And there are some tight third places for Laputa, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and heck, even The Cat Returns is fun.
All of these show that plots don't have to be "good guy vs. bad guy" to be captivating.

My new favorite one of Studio Ghibli would have to be Howl's Moving Castle the animation and the story are just amazing and gorgeous! The Cat Returns is also awesome as well.

Is this praise or complaint? In either case, Miyazaki took the characters and some of the scenes from the book and made quite a different story out of it; just the same way he did with Eiko Kadono's
Kiki's Delivery Service. I happen to like both the book and the movie versions.

This is just a reminder that Turner Classic Movies has started showing Studio Ghibli movies today. We just saw Spirited Away.

Yeah, I was up around the time TCM was showing that (around three in the morning) and Spirited Away was a very good movie. The cinematography was pretty damn fresh and getting that Oscar always helps as well
They showed Princess Monokoke as well but I fell asleep halfway through. Damn it all...
Peace.

I stayed up to watch
Princess Mononoke. Thanks to this thread for reminding me!
That is my favorite Miyazki movie. I like
Spirited Away too, but there's just something about
Mononoke that I find more enticing. And it's not just that there's violence. I think it might be the forest spirit. That guy is pretty cool. Or the little guys with the clinking heads (I don't know their name). They rock. The music is great in both movies as well.
It's weird, I had an urge to watch this movie the other day, and I didn't even know they were going to be showing it. Maybe it was a premonition.

Turner Classic Movies has a
sweepstakes for a set of three Miyazaki movies (
My Neighbor Totoro,
Spirited Away, and
Howl's Moving Castle), as well as a bunch of art books, picture books, and comics from those movies. People over 18 can enter once a day until January 31.

cool, by the way, i might've asked this before but, is howls moving castle and sequel to spirited away

Nope -- they are based on two entirely separate worlds. Miyazaki himself wrote the story for
Spirited Away, while the novel,
Howl's Moving Castle, was written by Dianne Wynne Jones. As always happens in a Miyazaki movie, the
movie has more than a passing resemblence to the novel, but not much. Regardless, I like both versions.

Recently Barrin and I saw Howls Moving Castle...that...was...AWSOME!!!!!!! I loved it! And after that we saw Wispers of the Heart and that was good too. We have Princess Mononoka, Spirited Away, KiKi, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa (2 versions) and Porca Rosso. (2 english versions)

I was confused for a while, and thought Howl's Moving Castle was the sequel to Castle in the Sky, and that they were both based on Diane Wynne Jones novels. But apparently Castle in the Sky was entirely original, and has nothing to do with Jones' novel Castle in the Air.

Castle in the Sky was originally titled
Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but since there are a number of people who can read Spanish but don't know of Jonathan Swift's third book of
Gulliver's Travels (which the flying islands comes from), the name
Laputa was dropped.

I just saw My Neighbor Totoro a few days ago because a friend lent it to me. I saw Kiki's Delivery Service too. I enjoyed both films.
I found out that the movie I was "watching" was Porco Rosso. Is it any good? I wasn't paying much attention.
I switched when the other movie came on. That "Country Roads" song annoyed me.

Tonight's movies are Only Yesterday, at 8pm and 12:30am EST (both subbed), and Pom Poko, dubbed at 10:15 and subbed at 2:45. These are very deep into Japanese culture, so they may not be quite as accessable as Ghibli's better-known movies.
