Well, the anarchy-totalitarianism question is completed...time for another probe into the mind of Humans.
If you had a choice of dreaming a life or living a nightmare, which would you choose?

Live in a nightmare. Reality is greater than a dream. A fantasy land of pure perfection, would be a nightmare. Only those who can accpet this fact are the ones who can understand reality. Such is the way of those who choose to walk in the rain without an umbrella, such is the way of those who wish for the truth. Never fall to the false platitudes and lies, always seek the truth...

Hmmm...what Schwartzwald said has me thinking...
Why do Humans seek to comprehend and understand everything? Why are they not satisfied with what they already know? We wish to tag a label, an explanation, to everything that exists...why is it not enough to just accept its existance?
Along with that, I'll ask a special bonus sixth question...
In your opinion, what is the best form of government in an ideal world and what form of government best works in the real world, and why?
Oh, and for the record, I too would rather live a nightmare than dream a life. Reality is always better than Fantasy, no matter how harsh Reality may be.

Perfect government cannot exist. For one thing, what is perfect government? There will be a very large difference between the answer of an American, the answer of a Cuban, and the answer of a Japanese. And even if there is a majority vote on a perfect government, there will still be people complaining about how it's run.
Human nature is contrary. There is always expansion, pushing outward, progress, going over the borders, going where angels fear to tread and trampling them in their wake. No matter how accomodating, no matter how fair a government is, someone will complain and try to improve it to what they 'think' it should be. (Need to stop reading Machiavelli.)
The democratic type of government is still fairly young (went on hiatus after Rome fell and wasn't resurrected until now) and will work if the people remember how to work it. Monarchy has been reduced to a figurehead with a crew of thousands running things. Communism is obviously flawed. Socialism COULD be worked with, but it's too bogged down in philosophy to get anything done. Dictatorships offer little in the way of fairness for the common man (as well as freedom).
You can have freedom or you can have peace; either way, you'll sacrifice a bit of each no matter what government you go with.
*reads over* Well, THAT didn't make any smeggin' sense!

Governments were an imperfect idea from the start right? They must have known that when the first government was created, but it was there best solution at the time... right? I have wondered before if perfection in any form can ever be assertained?

Humans seek to comprehend everything. It is their curse, a curse to attempt to understand everything. Few humans manage to be satisfied. As for me, I exist, is that enough? Nay, existence is a curse, as is sentient thought. Another reason that they seek to understand existence is to give meaning to their pitiful lives. They refuse to accept the idea that their creation was merely a collection of random events, lucky or unlucky.
As for government, a perfect one is impossible. No matter where you live the government will always be flawed. The politicians care little for the good of anyone, save themselves. There are those few exceptions, but everytime they come around they are mercilessly annhilated by the others. No government can ever be perfect, just as no human can ever be perfect. The only way to appease the humans would be a society of near endless pleasure. Where the citizens remain ignorant to everything. Dreaming a life...the best example of this would be Brave New World by George Orwell. It exlemplefies everything that can happen, and possibly will. I am glad that I am an android. Not an actor in this play, merely an observor...

Lady Tesser gave us a very nice, short, and to the point analysis of different governments...I agree there can be no perfect government, especially if one doesn't know the purpose of government.
Which is what Manji calls into question...what is the purpose of government? Is it to control the people, is it to protect the people, is it to give the people freedom?
Depends on who you ask...I tend to think a bit in line with the Social Contract, in which people enter government for protection...
However, I also think we Humans deserve some liberties...and should not have to make great sacrifices in order to have protection.
But a perfect balance between protection and liberty can never be reached, can it? In my opinion, the perfect government would do just that.
Unfortunately, not many governments have even come close to carrying that out...sure, Democracy is a decent idea, but it doesn't work in large numers...at least, not a true democracy. The Republic we have here in the U.S., I think, isn't a true democracy...although it's the closest we'll get. There are still several aspects of society that the citizens of the United States are not aware of, and the citizens don't have much say in government...politics (especially political parties) have definately changed the nature of being a representative of the people.
However, if you look at some of the alternatives...they aren't much better. Dictatorship can be effective if a competant ruler is in place...but even if you were to get a competant ruler, s/he won't last forever...
Then there are sub-categories of dictatorships, but they all have the same pros/cons as dictatorship in general. Whether it's via Religios, Monarchial, Dynastical, Propaganda, or Military rule, if you have a competant ruler, it could work, but more often than not you won't have a competant ruler. More often than not you'll have a ruler who believes government is a device to control the people.
Marxism is a really good concept, but there is too much room for abuse...as we have seen in Soviet Russia. Hence why Communism falters.
Anarchy...not really a form of government persay (more of the absense of government), gives the people liberty but at the cost of the protection government suppplies.
if humans weren't so egotistical, self-centered, ambitious people, then we probably wouldn't have these problems with government...
Brave New World was an interesting book, and brought up some interesting concepts, but I don't think it really works from a moral standpoint. I mean, (as has already been said), it would be much better to live in a real world of pain than a fantastical world of happiness. All you have in a fantasy is just that...a false happiness, a false reality.
True reality is always better than the real thing. One reason I detest sleep (the other being it wastes waking hours).

At this point you fight religion, a battle that in present day can not be won...
I like to stick with one qoute explaining myself...
"I think therefor I am"
That is how I see myself, sencient and nothing more, that is how I see all of humanity...
Without advancement in the race we cannot truely comprehend that which happens around us...
It would be funny to learn in a 1000 years that our universe is really just a giant sign of the sort, pointing the way to a universal diner

Humans are fools...we exist, that's enough! If you really want to know why you exist, look within yourself.
That's what I believe, at least. And I've come to the conclusion that I exist to torture the masses and make life a living hell for all those I come into contact with...
Okay, maybe not, but it's a nice thought.

"The only way to appease the humans would be a society of near endless pleasure." - Big Omega
Don't forget the Roman use of Breads and Circuses - a recession combined with a free meal and the Colosseum games for the unemployed citizens, and Rome fell flat on it's ass.
Perhaps the humans really shouldn't try to unite under banners ... perhaps they should keep it at the local level ...
Of course, that goes back to the violence and wars, as man cannot be content with a little power over a small group. It must be larger, with more economy, and a wider variety of potential bedmates.

I think we should give every person on Earth their own individual plot of land, tell them "This is your country, you own everything that exists on it", and leave everyone alone.
See how fast world powers emerge.

I estimate that within 5 minutes the number of countries would be reduced from a couple billion to 10.
Okay, that's an exaggeration, but it shows the Human's desire for power...to have something to own.
Damn materialistic thoughts!
I think one of society's biggest mistakes was creating a monetary system. The barter system was perfect while it lasted.

You want to do an experiment like that? Take 1 male human and 1 female human, leave them alone on a deserted island, let them keep it for themselves and do what they want on it.
Then we can observe what happens.

It'll be like starting all over with Adam and Eve.
