What do you HATE about Anime

Ghost in the Shell is great like that. It's like if you miss an episode, you're basically screwed. Don't give up though because you might understand a little of what's going on, but really, you'll just get confused with earlier episodes because its just that ingenious and well, that damn good.

Even when I find myself going "so...wait, whos that? what group is this they mean?" It's still entirely awesome.

Oh. Another thing to the list.

You know what really grinds my gear?

The typical "badass" evil guy who really isn't evil at heart, and all the yaoi fangirls that get off to fantasizing about him.

Kagome and Inuyasha don't even really get together and Naraku still lives. WTF?

You'll have to get the manga inorder to get the whole story. They purposely didn't animate the entire manga. also it's typical takahashi, 40+ vols. with little to no charecter development. Pass the Berserk.

Yaoi the Bane of anime fandom. I liked Fake though, it was pretty funny.

Heros dieing isent exclusive too anime , anyone here see "Shane"?

pretty much anything can be tolerated if the story is good enough .Wolfs rain I hated , the plot was stupid and I just dident like it.But I dont like the Matrix movies either , bad plots , but all very "pretty".

& in Bebop when Spike dies and the credits roll , I was sad then at the end of the credits instead of "See you space Cowboy" it said "Your gunna carry that weight" and I laughed because I got the Beatles referance

So uh what Idont like is somthin that all forms of entertainent seem too suffer from in, the focus on visuals too the detriment of story, or rather the lack of a good plot ....

Whether this has already been said or not, I hate the uncaring emotionless guy, like Sasuke from Naruto, Kai from Beyblade, or Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh. (I don't like any of these shows, but they're the best examples)

One thing I certainly hate about modern animation is the total abuse of CGI
effects in unison, or in many cases in place of, genuine cel animation.

For a show I'm not supposed to take too seriously, like Excel Saga,
I can tolerate. In fact, I like it in that context. It adds to the "Silly" factor.
But in an anime that I look to for drama or strong storytelling, I really appreciate
pure, unadulterated, genuine, NON-DIGITIZED, NON-CGI'D animation; drawn
on paper, inked by hand, timed and sized to please.

Big O Season 1 is a very good example of this. I personally enjoyed Big O 1
much more than 2. This was partly because of the different artistic method,
which I had an easier time giving proper consideration to.

When we got to season two, I didn't care nearly as much, as too much CG was
used and drew my attention away from the actual plot.
What nightmares could a third season bring, I wonder? I can only imagine
fully CG'd Megadeus battles with lens-flare lasers. *shudder*

So, in conclusion, I hate CG. It works okay in movies with authentic folks
in most cases, if done properly. But combined with the old fashioned pen-and-paper set, it just looks bad. Period.

[In Response to Randolph's Post Above]

CG is a strange thing... I think the reason why it's being used more and more is because it is genuinely cheaper than traditional cel animation (and is most likely easier, too; I know from personal experience that traditional animation is sure as hell no cakewalk), and it's a medium that's still growing up. In the future, there's a good chance that CG will replace all traditional animation, but perhaps by that time, it will have matured into a process that can be able to mimic 2D's look and feel. Who knows?

And as for modern examples... I am impressed by Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's use of CG vehicles and mecha that are cel-shaded to better blend in with the 2D characters. Gankutsuo is a brave pioneer into a world of CG never before seen in anime. And the CG in Miyazaki's recent stuff is pretty damn awesome, although he does an excellent job of hiding it within the rest of the animation.

But I agree with Randolph that CG can bite the big one at times. So here's the jist of my entire spiel...

Good CG = Huzzah!

Bad CG = KILL ME NOW.

CG's alright.

The fanbase is the real killer for most anime's though. Especially because more of the...uhh..."weaker" ones have rabid martyrs.

I hate: (besides poor english dubbing)

Anime where the main character is a bad guy. Ref Riding Bean. The whole GTA crowd needs to be slapped silly.

Senseless violence and death, because the writer lacks the brains to develop sensible plot elements. Ref Wolf's Rain, FMA, Noir.

Endless angst. Ref FMA, Advent Children. Maybe NGE.

Brat main characters. Ref FMA.

Schitzo plot elements which don't add up. Ref s-Cry-ed, FMA.

Ridiculous powers which aren't handled well. Ref kiddie pron (DBZ, etc), FMA, RoD.

Dumb stereotypical government conspiracies. If I sniff one, I'm gone. Golgo 13: The Professional comes close. Horrible anime...

Heavy metal/rap soundtracks. Ref Samurai Champloo. Poo.

Same here. But the millions of fangirls still love them. Why, I'll never know.

As for (more) things I hate about anime...

Reused Footage- Anime abuses this way too much. The worst offender in this department is Toei Animation. Oh, how they love to reuse their stock footage. (*cough*Sailor Moon*cough*)

I also hate inconsistant animation/art styles. I also hate when a series finale is poorly animated/or doesn't have the head art director involed.
Randolph 02-19-2006 09:04 AM
I believe they call that "Stock Footage", Naojiro. Big O used it all the time.

A while back, my sleeping schedule was rather out of sync with AS's lineup.
So, my mom, who stayed up all night, would watch Big O for me.
However, half the time she'd skip it, citing it was a rerun. Even if it wasn't.
Because they all opened with the same footage and dialogue.
So, yeah. It can be troublesome. But having tried my hand at animation myself,
I can sort of understand why they do it.

I can understand, but sometimes it gets annoying. With Big O, it doesn't bother me so much. Since the artist and animators worked really hard, and the show looks beautiful. However, it doesn't look good when they reuse footage of season 1 in season 2 (digital crappy animation).

It mainly gets annoying when studios reuse ALOT of footage. As I mentioned, Sailor Moon really kills with footage. And unlike Big O, Sailor Moon doesn't have very good animation. (Although that's the only thing wrong with it! Big Grin )

Another thing I detest are fanboys that contastantly go on and on about how "certain shows" are butched over here and it's their life long mission to keep complaining even though nothing can be done. Lets use Naruto as an example...people complain about it being edited down to a kids show...umm hate to break it to people but Naruto has always been a kids show, it's target Audience is 10-13 year olds,so yeah it's a kids show technically. should it be edited over here? of course not, no anime needs to be editted.
