No, what I'm "complaining" over is that they ruined a good scene. Having a characters say Saying "Dilly Dally, Shilly Shally" instead of something that when said means something like "Cloud, you've been drifting away from me/us". In other words, what I'm "complaining" about is that they chose words that sound silly, and don't convey what that scene was supposed to.

...I just told you they mean the exact same thing. I could reword what you just said to have the same exact definition to any objective observer, fitting my criteria flawlessly, and you'd have no way to argue.

It may sound silly to you, but don't use meaning arguments. They mean basically the same thing: to delay, to drift from an objective. In this case, you drift away from someone by hiding your feelings... i.e., you dilly dally when it comes to their expression.

I've seen the movie, I remember the scene, and I have to agree with R.Smith... it doesn't fit the same. Using a different word that has the same meaning does, yes, have the same meaning, but there are connotations to words that can make synonyms mean different things when viewed in relation to a words use.




Though really, it isn't all that important, because the movie was pretty nonsensical. It was like Akira + FFVII + Violence - baby monsters.

But there's more evidence that that ISN'T the case than otherwise, as I have correctly illustrated.

For example, you could try to pull the 'lament' alternative meaning, and I could turn around and counter that the supposed drifting is inherently lamentable, saying it outright is redundant.

I'm telling you, both of us have seen the movie, and both of use agree it doesn't fit the scene... You can argue the logic aspect all that you'd like, but without having scene the movie in question, you really aren't in any position to pass judgement on whether or not the word fits.

As I remember it, in the scene, Tifa asks Cloud a question, and he dodges it and shrugs it off. Then she mutters the line under her breath. "Dilly dally, shilly shally," which technically has the same definition as "zuruzuru," sounds like a really goofy thing to say. How many people do you hear on the street saying that? The sub I had explained that it was at least a somewhat common thing to say something like "zuruzuru" because Japanese people are crazy. In the states, no one says stuff like "dilly dally shilly shally" because it sounds stupid. It isn't so much whether the two words mean the same thing; of course they do. Its the connotation of the phrase used in the translation that detracts from the quality of the scene. This, of course, is highly subjective, because for all I know people two states away could be saying "dilly dally shilly shally" all the time.

My logic vs. your opinion...

I'll go with the logic.

...And this is a movie derived from a video game. I mean... How many people on the street do you see using gigantic swords? I mean... does not that 'it's not said on the street' argument just reek of irony to you?

Then there's an alternate point that if I were to repeat any direct translation of that one word on the street, chances are I'd be looked at as having lost my marbles or traumatized.

It's a f***ing line in a movie with realistic characters that have DBZ physics.

R.Smith, a number of the YouTube links you've posted have been removed from the site, but for everyone to know, the same clips can be found from others' user names if you search for it.

I was watching those clips... at first I didn't like it, but I got used to it fairly quickly.

I had to see multiple scenes w/Kadaj's voice to get used to his.. Loz and Yazoo, to me, sound just like their Japanese counterparts. The one scene I saw with Tifa was not enough to get used to it, it sounds fake to me. I like Cloud's voice more than his Japanese version; the japanese VA brought out a more loner feeling persona, but the english VA feels more like the Cloud that would dress up as a woman to help a friend ^^. Yuffie has the cheerful youngness... Red XIII, I don't think his japanese OR english VAs sound how i expected, same for CaitSith. Vincent, good on both sides, Stephen Blume makes yet another brooding sorta-evil sounding character sound sweet. I like Barret's VA better than the Japanese one, the ease in his speech and the hoarseness of his voice. I only saw the beginning of Sephiroth's appearance, and my initial thought is that I like the japanese voice better, but we shall see. Oh, and Aeris/th has that peacefulness to her voice, I like that. EDIT: Forgot Cid and Rufus Sinra. Cid sounds Australian, it SOUNDS like how i'd expect but doesn't really fit how he looks. Rufus, nothing like I expected. but his japanese VA didn't make a big impression on me either, so no biggy. i haven't really heard the VA's for anyone else, like Marlene. Overall, I think I'll like the movie as a whole.

And since the whole zuru zuru thing is the big discussion now, my 2 cents is that yeah, dilly dally doesn't sound like anything an American or European or English speaker would say, even if it means the same thing, but really, it doesn't bother me, because i understand that there can be trouble with translation, most especially when you have a CGI movie where it would be tough to make changes to mouth movements if any were made at all. and anyway, it isn't OUR Earth, it's there's, maybe they use that all the time. I can certainly say i'm much more open to saying dilly dally than to have reactors that suck the energy out of the planet built, but a number of people in the FFVII world seem perfectly happy with that, too.

About the "Zuru Zuru Zuru"/"Dilly Dally, Shilly Shally", I'm not saying it what it should have been translated to, but just what my opinion is on it.

Barret officially has the best voice out of all of them.

I've dropped the "Zuru Zuru Zuru" vs "Dilly Dally, Shilly Shally" thing, I just wanted to have both up for comparison.

Btw, the movie was "Dubtitled", which means they used the english script for the subtitles. This means when turning the subs on when you selected the Japanese audio, they aren't literal translations.

I would have liked the option of having a second set of subs that were the literal translations.
