Sorry, but only the Moderators/Administrators/Staff are allowed to lock threads, whether it be 'physically' or 'verbally'. There have been incidents in the past when certain forum members (who were not Moderators, Administrators, or Staff Members) have taken it upon themselves to verbally lock a thread ("Consider this thread locked," etc...), when in fact the thread was perfectly fine, and did not need to be locked. It's just best if forum members leave that job to us.

The best way that a regular forum member can help out in a situation where a thread appears to be getting out of hand is to contact the appropriate Moderator, whether it be via PM, IM, etc., and alert them that you think they should look over a specific thread. That way, the Moderator can judge for themselves whether or not the thread needs to be closed.
