Just out of curiosity, why do people use .png files? They're ten times as big as .jpg files of equal quality.

Well, this one is one-tenth the size of the original, and the artifacting doesn't strike me as being much worse:

You can see it if you look, but then, the original has quite a bit of artifacting in it already. It doesn't strike me as being important to the overall effect.

yes, but thats because the video i took it from was blocky.

In general:
JPGS use fractal maps to save images, and if u know about fractals and the parameters of a jpeg, ud knwo why they rnt good. Fractals are shapes like any shape that is selfsimilar, and Jpegs store maps of fractals to make a picture(thats why they r so small, they do not actually store the data of the picture just a fractal map). PNGS however store the pixel data in a compression format similar to a zip file.(which does not damage the data) If i remember correctly, Jpegs lose about 5% quality everytime you make an image a Jpeg, whereas PNGS lose only about .2%

in short they distort the image (if the image is complicated) ANd most iamges we show would be complex.

It really depends on what you want to do, but for panaramics and highquality stuff I use PNGs cause they r much better.

Sure. It's the difference between lossy and lossless compression. But screen captures ALREADY have undergone lossy compression; it's not like you're starting with a virgin image.

What I like to do is to start by reducing the amount of artifacting in the image by using the fill tool on the foreground objects (that is, the people), to fill them with solid colors again. I just pick up the color with the eyedropper tool and then fill the area with itself. This helps because the screen capture doesn't REALLY have solid colors; they wander all over the place.

Then I crop the image to get rid of any annoying artifacts at the edges, especially the top edge. I generally use the sharpen tool as well.

If the results are too jaggy, I tend to add some controlled blur by reducing the size of the image, or maybe reducing it and then enlarging it again.

Here's a typical example. It takes about five minutes to do a quick and dirty job:

The trickiest part is dealing with artifacting for parts of the picture that aren't solid colors, like the sky. The clone tool is pretty good for this. There's something to be said for just leaving it alone, too.

It depends on teh type video and the quality of the compression of teh video, along with the framerate.

I know how to eliminate the distortions now, but when I made that image I was a newB at PSP, so I didn't then. You should check out the puni pics I made, they r good, most of them.

Well I use Adobe Premiere, a very powerful program, to extract stil frames from DIVX 4 videos at 420x315 size, and notice my pics are 640 sized. I increase it with Adobe, because you get a much truer formed image when you take it off the video, HOWEVER the distortion is also more obvious even with advanced sizeing.

Yes, I dont like taking time to fix every pic cause I have hundreds I took out, I simply use PSP to make it a PNG with better color, and fix major problems with the image, most of teh time. However on certain things I want really good I do edit it to absolute perfection.

On the topic of Compression VS Size, I personaly have a big hardrive and broadband, so I ALWAYS use PNGS now, they are far superior.

Villian from the second episode of New Cutey Honey. Collects pretty girls, and turns them into stautes for her Jewelry Castle. She also wears little clothing. Ask you can see, she's nuts.

Actually, I have a program that lets you save JPG images at any percentage. Normally (like in MSpaint) it's a 70% thing (or close to it) With my pans I save them as 95-100% depnding on how close I can save them to the limit. (Quality is eveything) Also I find that making pics smaller (in actually visual size not 'byte' size) can make them look more clear and not as pixelated as some of the bigger ones I've seen here. That's why I go for the smaller snapshot size and not the large ones Smile Saves bytes and also makes the pic look better Wink

oh btw...I just found out I have a 2 head VCR O_o ...Since mosst VCRs nowadays are 4 heads, I think I kinda found what is making my pics so grainy! Shocked Embarrassed Sweatdrop

we talked about that evan. I said even the best quality jpegs rnt as good as pngs. Thats 100% jpeg quality, not true quality. And u could save them at 70 and no one would notice mr VCR.

The whole point is to try and make BIG PANARAMICS the best quality u can.... little pans r pointless

and BTW i just got some of my pics accepted by a pro fanservice.

I have broadband, too, and I often save images in a larger format on my hard drive. But I find it hard to believe that someone with a 56K modem who'd be happy to wait 10 seconds for one of my pictures to download would be just a happy if it took almost two minutes, even if the difference in quality IS visible if you look hard.

My goal is that people shouldn't have to spend much longer waiting for a picture than they do looking at it. That seems only fair.

well thats not my goal, people with 56k modems dont go around this thread very much. PLus i think their was a warning att he beginning that ppl with dialup are gonna load slow.

plus the fanservice ppl need to link to my account, on Irev and they dont care about long load times. They like my work.

why do you think they don't come around here? Red Face

:-/

I'll try to make some more Trigun Pans...I taped basically the whole series Big Grin

Angelic Layer

I've never seen Angelic Layer but my new Farscape DVD (vol. 4.4) had a preview for it and a couple of would-be nice pans ^_^

I don't know if anyone's done this one before. I'll remove it if it has.

Ain't she pretty? The pan would have been never-impossible but I discovered a little trick to doing these things in Fireworks last week so it was just time consuming. Big Grin

Ug, the color's off. I'll fix it later when there's not so much sunlight coming through my window >_< for about two hours in the evening the light shines right onto my monitor.
