Name's 'Tesser' - no 'a' - or just Tess (like the physics concept of interdimensional travel). Yeah, I was referring to the first Guyver movie - my brother and I were rabid Guyver fans in the mid-90's and were appalled by the lousy scripting and directing more than anything else.
Anyway, live action Big O is a no-no. HOWEVER - an anime movie version, locked into the storyline, would be a good balance.

Actually, the idea of a live action "Big O" would work if it applied itself to the golden rule of adaptations: smart freedom. Follow the story and symbolism, and change anything that wouldn't really work for a feature film. This would require a good bit of condensation for "Big O", or at least only sticking to the crucial storyline and doing away with some of the more tangental fare, as is done when books become films.
The other thing that is necessary is a decent filmmaker. Somebody mentioned having Jean Reno as Dastun before, and in that light an interesting candidate for writer/director could be the French maestro Luc Besson, who is responsible for "The Big Blue", "Subway", "Le Dernier Combat", "Nikita" (better known in America as "La Femme Nikita", a lousy remake called "Point of No Return", and an even lousier USA television remake series), "Leon, The Professional" and "The Fifth Element", among other such fine cenematic feats. He's capable in terms of action, humor, mystery, and even portraying relationships none too dissimilar between Roger and Dorothy. He would be able to have a faithful adaptation of their relationship without resorting to making it cheaply sexual. His heroines, Nikita of "Nikita", Mathilda of "Leon, The Professional", and Leeloo of "The Fifth Element" are fine female characters, and in the case of Mathilda, which to a certain extent I feel best resembles the Roger/Dorothy situation so far, absolutely no sex takes place.
I'm not saying sex is completely ruled out, but it would have to make sense. And most likely, I would only support it if it happened in the series itself, which is a likelihood I'm not sure of.
Perhaps the best road for a live action "Big O" would be a miniseries, or something like that. This could be concieved as a deathkneel, since most miniseries are utter shite (imagine how terrible the results could be if handed to ABC's new mini-man: Stephen King), but again, if a proper cast, a great filmmaker, and due attention to the plot was assembled, then perhaps there could be something that would enrich the "Big O" experience. We'll always have the anime, just as the readers of a beloved novel will always have their original text to appreciate. Just as long as the people who may eventually turn "Big O" into something live action appreciate the original just as much.
And absolutely no Sam Raimi, David Koepp, Tim Burton or their lackies anywhere near this.

Uh hehe you do know about the big controversy and the "american" version of the movie due to some.....suggestive...scenes between Leon and the 12 year? old girl. The American version cut out like a good 30 minutes. However you do have a point, the same interaction they have cause Dorthy is an android who knows very little about human beings...
I for one however think the Live action movie can work...except the biggest problem posed to it besides that hollywood stereotype crap is of course Big O itself...Mechs don't work good in movies...( looks to power rangers the movie ). Even with todays technology can u really imagine seeing a sky scraper height mech duke it out with monsters? CGI of that scale looks massively fake and almost laughable. I'm not one for mechs ( it died out long ago ) and I would think Big O the movie could be made with just Roger as a Negotiator and the only weapon he has is the griffon ( his car ). No giant robot duke outs...cause that would look ridiculous in a movie...

Am I the only one that thinks a Big-O live action movie would be awesome? They're doing a fine job with hellboy why couldn't they do the same with Big-O. Maybe get Kaneko to make it, with "suitmation" Megadeus. Yeah...that would rule.

The new Gamera and Godzilla movies are awesome...they could make Big O work. There's no need to tackle the whole series, just do like they do with other "comic book" movies. Use one villian as the film's centerpiece, Beck or Schwarzald, expand on the story you can easily stretch anything to an hour and a half without trying to explain everything. A Big-O live action movie wouldn't be about returning the cities memories obviously that'd be too much for one movie, it'd be about Roger and Big-O defending Paradigm City.

If someone were actually able to make a decent Big O live action movie, I'd probably track them down, bow before them and kiss their feet...
I just can't see it happening with the current state of mainstream movies...if it were decided that a Big O live action movie were to be produced, as others have mentioned before, it would be warped to appeal to the mainstream more than the true anime fans in order to cash in more...that's just how the movie making business is nowadays.

I really think an anime movie, with an original storyline (perhaps drawing parallels with the main story arcs, or maybe with an original villain) would be a pretty good idea.

There will be some guy (not Roger) called the Negotiator, a girl named Dorothy (not a robot), a maid (no Norman) and a huge conspiracy with aliens using giant robots to take over. Negotiator will get info from a man on the phone called Big Ear.
Of course, it would also contain Beck, who would get sent to jail for killing a man named Michael Seebach. The Negotiator will have to combine forces with him and his locked away Big Two to save The City of Amnesia (never called Paradigm City).
