One Piece Appreciation Thread
Krang and GK, are you still working on that forum?
Anyway, for some reason I decided to watch an old episode of One Piece that I recorded off the FoxBox. It was the episode where Zoro (yes ZORO not ZOLO...gosh...idiots...) fought Mihawk. First of all, the dialogue was terrible, the music was grating, and all the violence was edited out. All blood gone and even guns painted blue in some sort of futile effort to convince kids that they are toys. All of that is no different than any other episode of 4Kids desecration.
What was different, or at least new to me, were Mihawk, Sanji, and the rest of the Baratie crew's voices. Zeff, Carne, and Patty's voices were abysmal; the same old stereotypical pirate accents that 4Kids seems to think are appropriate. That wasn't the worst of it though. Mihawk's voice made me want to commit sepukku and Sanji's voice made me want to do something worse. But mainly, both of them combined made me physically sick. I seriously felt the urge to hurl. Mihawk's voice was a horribly, horribly bad French accent. First of all, he's not even French! If I had to choose a nationality, I would say Spanish, but a character's voice should not be determined solely on appearance, which is what they seem to have done for nearly all the characters. God, I am not looking forward to hearing Chopper's voice.
Sanji, my favorite character as I have said before, is supposed to be cool, debonair, sangfroid, and romantic. 4Kids completely ignores the personality of the character; they probably only saw a picture of him and said, "Oh he's wearing a black suit and has cigarette in his mouth. Let's make him sound like a cross between a gangster and the Fonz! Oh, good idea!" This voice is sooooo horrible and doesn't fit his character at all! Like I said before, it physically made me want to vomit. Also, did he still have his cigarette? Did they change it to a lollipop or remove it completely? My VCR ate my tape when I was rewinding...
Since this is the One Piece Appreciation thread, if you really want to appreciate the show, please watch the Kaizoku fansubs. If you google that you should be able to find them, or PM me or Krang, and I'm sure GK wouldn't mind either.
I close this with a resounding "Damn you 4Kids!"

I'll have to check with GK. He had some problems with his last host and had to move his site, so I'm not sure if he got the forums moved to his new one.

I also stopped watching the 4Kids version a long time ago, but out of curiosity, I watched the Mihawk episode to see how bad it was. I agree, those voices are horrible, especially Usopp's, Sanji's, and Mihawk's. They're so ear-grating and annoying that it almost seems like they're trying to drive away viewers...
And I knew that a crappy company like 4Kids couldn't resist adding in stereotypical pirate voices whenever possible...| quote: |

Haven't they ever heard of a toothpick? Or just removing entirely?
Actually I'm not going to fret too much about it since I plan on never watching the 4Kids version again. I was playing the fansubbed episode synched with my taped version just to notice what they edited and what the dialogue should be. They take out scenes for no apparent reason and the dubbed dialogue is so uninteresting and repetitive.
Makes me sad.
According to commercials, Toonami is going to be airing One Piece in the near future. I forgot what date it was but at any rate I thought I'd at least post the news
(Tho I have a sneaky feeling that it's gonna be the same ones aired on the Foxbox)

I figured it would be the 4Kids version, and now that Toonami Digital Arsenal has the Toonami promos up, the horrible voices prove it...
BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen the original openings and endings for One Piece, be sure to check them out while you're there. TDA has all of them available for download, even up to the current ones being used for new episodes in Japan.
