Thanks, everyone! It's funny where a little daydream can take one. This started out as Instro and Dorothy playing a duet. I had no notion that Roger could play, either, until he sat down and started.

Penny Century writes:
I loved how you teased out one of the central elements in Dorothy's story, the Emperor's Nightingale theme, and used it to address the occasionally uncomfortable state of human/android relations in Paradigm City. The characterizations were very believable, and Levy was a truly engaging OC. |
Well, I have been thinking for some time about the ramifications of androids being second-class citizens, as shown in the anime and the manga. Can an android enter into contracts, own property, and engage in the social and legal activities that an adult human can? And even if he can in law, is he discouraged from doing so by society?
And I'm glad you like Daoud Levy. I like him quite a lot, and he may be back. I'm not quite satisfied with the state of affairs at Amadeus after "Leviathan."

Hey there, Pygmalion, where does the song "Paper Doll" come from? I am very curious to hear it, if I can find it... I've been singing it a few diferent ways, trying to figure out the pacing and such...

It was written in 1915 by John Stewart Black, but the best-known version was by the Mills Brothers in 1942.
This site has lyrics, but the links seem to be broken. Darn.

I've put Falcon7's illustration at the end of Chapter 8 to show the scene illustrated.
Thanks again for this wholly unexpected surprise, Falcon7!

That's a beautiful piece Pygmalion, and it perfectly captures "Dorothyness."
And good job thinking up a perfect bastard of a bad guy...Edward Bell.
For someone who likes classical music as much as I, that story meant a lot.

Flippin awesome story Pygmalion.
Wasn't sure just how to express how much I liked it, until I watched Radio Days and it hit the scene that features "Paper Doll."
My immediate reaction was 'Yay! It's the Player Piano song!'...it's part of my subconscious now.

Wow! Really great story,
Pygmalion! I particularly loved the 'Roger and Dorothy at the piano scene' at the end - that was sooooooooooo cool

I had never thought of Roger playing the piano either, but it was in the background the first time Dorothy came to the mansion. It makes perfect sense.

Is this like immunizations, where we need periodic booster shots?

[final scene]
Uncle Tomato sits at piano with Pygmalion, and as they finish playing the kid's duet version of
Heart and Soul, Uncle Tomato proposes for the ummtenth time. And they got married (again), had many, many wonderful honeymoons, and lived happily ever after.
Fin.
I agree with
Tony.

That was beautiful.
Especially at the end where you wrap it up.
I was always disappointed at the lose ends in the story because other than Dorothy's prowess at playing it, the writers had never addressed the reasons for the existence of Roger's Piano in the series.
Grand Pianos are not cheap.
I was always left with the impression that it was just another piece of furniture to him, kind of a "status symbol" of sorts.
I thought less of Roger because of this.
It was like he was taking this beautiful musical instrument and reducing it's potential to that of a collector plate or something.
Thank you very much for this, it was quite an enjoyable read.
I just wanted to add something here...
Piano scenes always seem to add polish to a story.
I always liked that scene in pretty woman where Richared Gere is playing the piano and then he says that he "only plays for strangers".
That was just too cool.
You've actually inspired me for some fan fiction I'm working on myself, and I think maybe I'll include something like that.
Pygmalion, do you also own the music cds to this anime?
My favorite track is Apostle.

You and I had the same reaction to the piano's presence at the Mansion. I decided that when Roger fell into this arrangement after leaving the Military Police, he felt the need for some "polish" as a man-about-town, and had Instro tutor him in the piano.

I have the season 1 soundtrack, and I hear it 4-5 times a week, because it is my sons' favorite CD. I hope CD Japan will have another pressing of the season 2 disc, just to have some variety!
