They ALL were, even the penguin had some melodramatic backstory about being the last one in some series of genetic experiments to create a warm water penguin or something.

Oh yeah, that's true. I forgot about the penguin, Pen Pen. He was used in abusive scientific experiments and was about to be 'thrown away' until Misato picked him up.

It's so darn true and apparent that EVERY single character in Neon Genesis Evangelion has some sort of titanic psychological disorder or complex. I think Risuato's is the most DISTRUBING one of them all but there is one character who is pretty much normal... for lack of a better word. Shinji's friend, not Toji, but the fruity one with the glasses with likes to flim all sorts of stuff. He's strange alright, but at least he wouldn't be the field day dream for a therapist either.
Peace.

Are they allowed to do that? I mean why would they?

anyone else here that their going to be changing the names of the characters for the movie to more enlglish names? I heard it on another thread on the asmbs on this subject.

People are judging this off of those production sketches from WETA aren't they?

Those have really..zero impact on anything. The only purpose of them is to give some vague approximation of the design. In the case of the actual characters you're dealing with actors that haven't been cast, and props/costumes that don't exist yet. So obviously the names are just sort of a stopgap thing. Thats also why the misato one looks like some sort of extra from planet of the apes with less makeup, it's just a drawing.

i think the only way to make the ending easier to understand is to change it and THAT would be blasphemy

Get your pitchfork ready, it already happened.

End of Evangelion was made ENTIRELY because people found the ending of the series confusing and/or lackluster. So this "confusing" ending with staypuft marshmellow rei and people turning into orange drink is actually supposed to be the more straightforward one.

It's been years since I've bothered to watch either ending, but basically it's not too hard (it just seems really deep and complex, like alot of that show.). Alot of the movie is just...intentionally vague for little reason other than the sake of being vague I think, and supposedly the original version shown in theaters over there had very random scenes just inserted into it.

spoiler (highlight to read):
Lillith/Rei/Staypuft marshmellow angel makes everyone lower their AT fields and become orange drink (LCL fluid), thus merging them into some kind of literalized collective unconciousness. Hence why everyone is seeing their loved ones before popping like water balloons. Shinji eventually decides not to, preferring to remain an individual, and finally doing something other than being a whiney brat. Everyone dies/melts except him and Asuka. The finale of the series is the exact same thing, except the entire process is shown from the perspective of Shinji basically arguing with his own subconcious.

Also a bunch of special ops guys decimate NERV using G11 rifles, until Misato singlehandedly takes a bunch of them out because she's just that awesome.

So basically...yeah, if anyone didn't get it. Thats all it is. To understand it actually requires giving it less thought than alot of people do, because it's sort of spiced up with all the stuff about giant laser crosses flying around.

Oh and no the fact Asuka's in a red jacket and has a bandage on her arm isn't some sort of hint that Shinji created a rei/asuka/misato hybrid. She's got a red uniform anyway and futhermore the whole scene has kind of a reddish tint to it, and the bandages can be explained by the fact the mass production Evas tore unit-02 limb from limb while eating it. So...yeah, that pretty much explains that one I'd think.

..How and why do I remember or know all of this.

Part of me seriously does think Anno turned to someone when the movie wrapped production and said "there, let those S.O.B.s figure THAT out"

Thanks, Sharpie. But yeah, that's basically the whole kitten kaboodle. Its actually pretty easy to understand, if you don't get distracted by the images and that's pretty hard to do. To be honest, I never understood why people thought that the 'new' Asuka in the new world was a Rei/Asuka/Misato fusion, and I've read or heard about this in numerous sources. It seemed pretty common sense to me that Asuka was... well Asuka and her wounds are from when she was fighting the mass pro. Evas.

But me, for personal reference, I would have taken Misato myself. Big Grin

That's the best thing I've read in a while. Big Grin And that's probably true and that does makes sense of a lot of the... (what the word?) crap that I saw.
Peace.

Oranage drink? Staypuft marshmellow angel? man I gotta watch that Big Grin
Sharpshooter005 02-06-2006 03:54 PM
Apparently these things have actual names within the canon.

But....seriously, who watched that and didn't immidiately think of tang and ghostbusters?
