Looks cool! I dig the pulp-era/Saturday morning serial stuff. Those giant flying robots silhouetted in the sky are straight out of the old Fleischer Superman cartoons. I'd almost see LoTR for this preview.

On another forum, someone had complained bitterly about the music playing during the Master and Commander trailers, and I learned that music for trailers is an off-the-shelf product, licensed to the film company for that use.
In the case of M&C, it was music from the Dune miniseries. In this case, it is from Stargate. In neither case does it mean any more than the people putting the trailer together wanted to evoke a certain mood.
So, whether you love or loathe Stargate, don't expect the movie to be anything like it.

I too have realized this, and have also realized that all movies/tv shows use the same sound clip for screaming. Also, that song in The Two Towers preview is from Requiem For A Dream.

The link at the end of this post is for a filmed called
Sky Captian and the World of Tommorow due out perhaps next summer, which I take it is based on a British Comic Book. I know little about except from watching the trailer you can see at the linked page. One scene shows an army of giant flying anthropomorphic robots flying in formation over New York. It reminded me of something else I had scene somewhere, but the memory is not quite there.

IIRC, there is a shot of one of the Giant Robo-foots crushing the pavement and/or car that reminds me of Boneparte trouncing through Paradigm dome.

Saw an interesting movie trailer this past weekend that really reminded me of Big O. It was called Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and has Big O's art deco, film noir, movie serials of the 30's and 40's feel to it. But what really caught my interest was the scene that showed a sky full of very big flying robots. The shot looked as if it was taken directly from Episode 26 of The Big O.
The film has some major actors in it, Jude Law, Gwneth Paltrow and Angelia Jolie so it may actually be good. If it is successful maybe someone, like maybe the folks at Cartoon Network, could capitalize on its success and make an art deco, film noir, anime series with big robots. I bet lots of people would watch it. Oh gee there already is, or was, a really good anime series just like that, ran for two successful seasons. In all seriousness, Paramount Pictures feels a film with some of same themes as Big O will make them a profit. Could this be used as a selling point to help convince the decision makers at AS that a 3rd season of Big O could be profitable too?

Anyway my opinions on this movie are this:
It will ruin any chance for a Big O movie. In the same way no one can make a movie about the world being an illusion without being compared to the matrix.
From what I read about the film, almost EVERYTHING is CGI. Only the things they physically interact with are real.
Also although it shares some of the same style and design elements of big o, it is made to be intentionally cheesy and campy.
I always invisioned a Big O movie as gritty realistic and dark, not like an old flash gordon episode with a big robot.
Sky captain will either be a huge success or suck huge along the lines of "League of Ex. Gentleman".
So instead of helping big o, it will reinforce the idea that big o is a cheesy show about giant robots in old timey new york.

Sky Captain will tank.
Keep in mind this is just an offhand prediction, but judging from the trailers? Ack.
Is it just me (and it may very well be), or do ALL the backgrounds shown in the trailers seem CG?
I'm not talking about the fight scenes. I mean there are a few scenes of the actors, who appear to be standing and trading dialogue infront of horribly obvious CG locations, which could easily be done on a set.
Maybe I'm wrong, keep in mind I'm judging by the t.v. trailers. But this movie...really dosen't look like anything special. It dosen't seem like it'll hit the mass-market summer action flick tier that it's obviously shooting for.
If a big o movie was ever made resembling this? (And I don't mean in the "robots attacking pseudo-noir city" way). I'd be highly dissapointed.
As for the matrix comparison...Big O has no lengthy rave scenes (well, the schwarzwald party sequence if you insist on being technical, but that was a million times BETTER than the part in reloaded), so it's safe from that.

(Also, damnit, that sealab 2021 episode summed it up well..the bulk of the dialogue in the matrix trilogy SUCKED.)
Speaking of which...I wonder how the evangelion movie will turn out...
EDIT: Oh, yeah. Aren't they..apparently EDITING IN a dead movie star into this? There was a topic somewhere mentioning that...yeah. The beer ads with John Wayne were amusing, but those were under 30 seconds. In a movie? No thanks.

The Matrix thing was an analogy.
Just as any science fiction film involving the world being an illusion will be compared to the matrix.
I'm afraid any movie involving Giant robots in 40's new york will be compared to sky captain.

Well, it depends. If people are drawn to this sort of thing, they'll be drawn to similar things, just like the dozens of spy shows in the 60s inspired by James Bond, and possibly even The Prisoner, a fave of mine I hardly ever get to see. I'd kind of like to see this flick, but it does have the potential to be stale cheeze for sure.
And BTW, PLEASE whatever form Big O takes, series or movie, keep it anime. A live action Big O would just not be right.

Don't know if Sky Captain will be a success or a clunker. Judging from the trailers, Sky Captain really captures the campiness of the old serials and that's what made them so much fun to watch. But cheesy or not if a film even remotely like Big O makes money chances of a third season are likely to increase. But if the film loses money then ... well let's change the subject.
Oops! Sorry 'bout repeating another thread, Next time I'll check the forums before posting.

hmmm... I remember seeing trailers for this many times during different movies.... and it looks like a steaming pile of suck... but that's just me.
Actually it looks like a pretty cool movie. I just have two basic problems with it. . .
behold! Bonepart:
1.) I hate when a piece claims that it's unique and new when many of it's parts are derived from other, possibly more imaginative pieces.
Today, my mom bought the Star Wars trilogy for her dad which came with a seperate preview of 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' (which I promtly swiped). The little preview DVD comes with a behind the scenes feature showing footage from the movie and little interview-ettes with cast and crew. Several people (Gwenth Paltrow and the producer I think) said that 'Sky Captain' is something that people have never seen before. A mash of 1930s film style, mystery in the form of giant robots, and a little gumshoe style romance thrown in there for good measure. Well, I got news for you; I've seen it. Hell, it's sitting on my DVD shelf right now. ::grumblegrumble::
2.) I knew someone was going to create a mostly CGI movie eventually, but that still doesn't mean I'm happy about it. It seems so fake. There is nothing on the sets. I feel so bad for the poor actors who had to play againist nothing. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure it's probably plenty of fun for the actors. A nice little exercise, but as a viewer I don't think I could watch this thing without a look of complete disgust and horror on my face. There's just something wrong about it.
I knew a few people in high school who couldn't enjoy the movie Castaway because of the CGI whale. I thought they were crazy. But right now, I kinda see where they're coming from. Just because we can act againist nothing, doesn't mean we should. Or maybe this is just reminding me of a line from RENT. It feels like we're moving ever closer to virtual life.
Honest to god 'Sky Captain' set:
