The novel Metropolis by Thea von Harbau is probably not entirely contiguous with the manual Metroplis carried around by Rosewater pere. However, there is little question that Fritz Lang film version of the novel is the inspriration for much of the outward appearacne and structure of Paradigm City. I note that the fim Metropolis will be shown on Turner Classic movies at 11:30 pm (est) on New Year's Day, in a superior, recently restored version.

Metropolis is definitely one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. It's also one the most recognizable films, even though so many today haven't seen Metropolis in its entirety.

Woo - YES! Now I get to see all of it!
The only place I've ever seen clips of it was in the Queen music video 'Radio Ga-Ga'.

I saw the anime one in full though however that is based on a Japanese trilogy IIRC, and if the original is on TCM i'll be obliged to watch.

It's a phenomenal movie, one of my favorites. A testament to the power of silent film. But it's been bastardized by so many different "restorers" over the years that it's hard to get a copy that's faithful to the original. I think the TCM version is the best.

True, Ted Turner quit with the colorization crap around the time Orson Welles said he'd never get "his damn dirty Crayolas on 'Citizen Kane'."
Besides, I understand the special effects were ahead of their time and I like to take apart what I see and think of how it was done with the technology of the time.

People like to rag Turner about colorization, but the truth is that you can simply turn it off by adjusting your set's color. Meanwhile, in the process, he restored a whole bunch of classics to a condition they haven't seen since they were brand-new. Propers to the Ted-man. I'll look forward to watching this again!

Yeah, God bless billionaire ted for Restoring these old films. Now new generations get to see them.
I've never seen the movie, but I just may watch it when it aires just to check it out.

It's a wonderful film and I look forward to seeing the restored version.

I have the Giorgio Moroder re-release from the mid 80's on tape. Until the newest version, this was the most complete version of Metropolis in existance. The Moroder version is sort of imfamous as it had a pop soundtrack playing under the film and a that turned off a lot of classic film buffs. (Metropolis is a silent film if you didn't know.)
TCM has been really good lately , especially since AMC sort of let itself go in recent years.

I seen the Anime Film Of Metropolis and I have to see that It is one of the highly most Detailed Anime films I have ever seen, I mean every aspect of the buildings , Monuments are perfect a few of them a Computerized Graphics and doesn't even detect it . But how does the Other Metropolis Movie looks like ? oh and I seen a part of Citizen Cane and it looks extremely Detailed not even a flaw of Inaquality ! as a matter of Fact it looks like that movie was made in the 1990's !

OM! I LOVE Metropolis. The one DVD version with the restored stuff, makes it the BEST! I think TCM is the one with the correct version (the DVD I saw). Anyway, yeah, I watched it to a.) see if there were any connections to Big O and b.) to compare it with the Anime version.
For a.) I really didn't notice much, but I must say the architechture and the seperations of classes are the same. Big O: You have poor people living and working out side the domes. Metropolis: You have poor people living underground and working underground. Something that just occured to me is that there is a moderator/negotiator who is the link between the two worlds (and he is from the rich world).
For b.) It was similar is some instances and not in others. Probably need to check them out again.
Metropolis (1928 version) IS the BEST movie I think of like...all time! The special FX were beautiful considering the time (I had also just seen Jason and the Argunauts like a few days before) so I was really impressed. And the plot, excellent. WATCH THIS MOVIE!
It has a lot more similarities to Big O now that we ended up with a Season 2. Wow...(spoiler tagged for those who HAVEN't SEEN Act 26 yet.)
| spoiler (highlight to read): |
| Roger as the Moderator between the director and the actors. Interesting concept. |

I've never seen metropolis, this might be a good chance.
Wasn't there also some sort of robot/android that was built in the movie?

Yep -- one of
the famous robot/androids of film history. She is given no name in the movie itself, but Forrest Ackerman once dubbed her Ultima (full name: Ultima Futura Automaton, after UFA, the initials of the company that produced
Metropolis).

IIRC, in the silent movie the city's central tower is likened to the Tower of Babel, and (to my memory at least) it resembles Paradigm HQ in shape/design.

I also found it interesting that the movie is German, which seems to be a major theme in Big O.

I'll have to remember to catch Metropolis when it airs. Always wanted to watch it, but I've yet to do so...

There are a lot of direct parallels (Mediator = Negotiator, anyone?), and a lot of things that could be red herrings. Things that would lead you to think that oh, maybe Roger is really Rosewater's son and stuff like that...I've got a ton of 'em.
But the movie itself is great.

Freder's hair looks a lot like Roger's. I think its the best human representation of the style.

The sides stick out just right. Sorry this is the only image I could find thats good enough :-\
Metropolis is a great movie. Its my favorite movie. Too bad no one will ever see the entire thing, its kind of sad. At least there is a book.
Metropolis definitely influenced Big O. No doubt about it.
