Lyrics to "Flag"

Pygmalion 10-27-2003 02:24 PM
Has anyone transcribed the lyrics to "Flag," the Union anthem we heard in Stripes last night? I can't make out more than a few words at the end.

Thanks,
Pygmalion

Sure. They go:

Hmmm hmmm hmmm-hmmm HMMMMMM hm-hm,
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm HMMMMMMMM hm,
Hmm Hmmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm.

What language is that song in anyway? I'm assuming it's French if an actual language is being sung that is.

It's supposed to sound like the French national anthem, and they did a very good job of stringing together a lot of vaguely French syllables, but i've listened to that song at least 150 times, and they are saying absolutely nothing.

Unless of course they are singing in Latin...

Does anyone know where I could download it?

btw, I've heard some people say it was German though to me it doesn't sound that way at all.
Muninn 10-27-2003 11:13 PM
It's not Latin either. In fact, it's almost English, with a pseudo-French accent. The opening line sort of sounds like "take up a flying flag", but when you slow it down and turn it up, it's nothing. it's like when you hear the wind talking.

Its so funny. I don't like France since the war, but I like this song.

So confused.

They probably are talking like they do in opera. I have a batman sountrack from Phantasm, and the voices are done the same way. Sounds like O danny boy, but its not. They just keep saying OOOO a lot,

LOL, did you know that what they're saying is actually the names of people in the production, like Eric Radomski, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Lolita Ritmanis, Mark Hamill, and Kevin Conroy, only they're singing them backwards!

I disagree, I flipped it and slowed it down too and I didn't hear any names.
Muninn 10-28-2003 12:51 AM
Well, that's what they said in the Batman: Animated companion book, and maybe Shirley Walker lied about it, but I heard names.

*Grins*

It's hard to say, really. It sounded vaguely German to me. I couldn't find any lyrics, either
dawnstrider 10-28-2003 01:01 AM
Well, I'm not certain how much of an impact it will make to the lyrics debate, but I hear the the melody of the song sung is a variant of a German song sung by Hitler. I'm not sure how reliable that source is, though Smile .
Muninn 10-28-2003 01:01 AM
When questioned by studio execs if she were saying "screw you" in Dutch, or something, Shirley Walker, the composer, said "no, it doesn't mean anything, it's just harmonizing". But, that was lying to Warner Bros execs, how are they going to know the difference.

Between Lisa Gerrard, Shirley Walker, and Yoko Kanno, there are an awful lot of songs nowadays which have lyrics that mean absolutely nothing. Smile

That's really out there.

To actually judge this by an objective criteria, let's all listen to the French National Anthem.

Hm...maybe if we play it backwards, we'll find some hidden meaning. Kind of like that "paul is dead" thing with the beatles. Big Grin

"I buried Schwarzwald" maybe?

That's what I was saying in my earlier post. I played it backwards. I slowed it down and played it backwards. It sounds almost the same, LOL! Smile

To me, it sounds like they took an existing song and are copying it's melody without actually using the words to it.
The idea of it being based on the French National Anthem is a good example.

By the way:
Has anyone else noticed how Vera Ronstadt's accent bounces from French to German and back again all within the same sentence?
The scene on the set from Act 25 is full of it.
