Episode 26 Discussion (The episode that didn't air)

I'm calmed down pretty much now, but mistake or not it was a cruel event for all the people who were really looking forward to it and then something crazy like this happens. I mean how often do networks air the wrong thing? Well 20 minutes left on the East Coast we shall see what destiny has in store...

Hi,

My name is Zola and I am a regular viewer of your Adult Swim programming.

I was extremely upset that the scheduled Big O episode, #26, The Show Must Go On, did not air at 11 pm as posted in your schedule.

I was upset because I had friends over and we were all sitting there waiting. I was upset because last week was a cliffhanger, and I was upset because I had been looking forward to the show all week.

I realized right away that it might have been an honest mistake—things happen, and although the timing was awful, if someone messed up, what could you do?

I immediately logged on to the Adult Swim Boards hoping for some info. There was none, but there were thousands of angry posts.

I checked the webcam at the party, and nothing was said.

Suddenly, all the Big O posts started being deleted. A moderator posted that the Big O fans were “spamming” and “acting like children”. Oddly, there was nothing particularly bad in any of these posts, just a lot of terribly disappointed people. It was especially strange considering that a small handful of Inu Yasha fans spam the boards all the time and no one seems to be worried about it.

If this was a Halloween prank, it was in incredibly poor taste. If it was an honest mistake, then someone should have seen to it that the word got out.

Instead, fans are left feeling that your network has no respect for them. You have lost important information due to those thread deletions—while some people were repeat posters, there was a good number of unique visitors. You now have no way of knowing how many there were, but I would guess that a least a thousand people logged in and posted about it.

I’ve always had a great deal of respect for Adult Swim, I felt it offered unique programming and we watch it nearly every night, welcoming a chance to see all kinds of anime. The Big O has been our favorite, and for the entire new season, we have tuned in faithfully at 11pm on Sundays to see the story unfold.

We have purchased every Big O product we could get our hands on. We own both the Season 1 and Season 2 soundtracks, the “Respect” single, the Angel/Roger/Big O toy set, the Dorothy/Roger/Big O toy set, the art book, the model, the one coin figurines (we even have the limited edition pewter finish ones!), and we have the first season DVD’s with the second season DVD’s eagerly awaited. If we could get posters, mugs, T-shirts or anything else, we probably would—I even went to the Sunrise site and purchased some of their downloads. I tell you this not to convince you that my family is crazy, but to demonstrate that we are in fact dedicated and are supporting the show in every way we can.

Now, though, I have a dilemma. Season 2 is over, Season 3 is way up in the air. So chances would have been that I would start following one of the other shows in the meantime. The problem is that I am now afraid to get excited about any of them. Why should I, when at worst, you thought so little of me that you would do something like this as a prank and at best, you thought so little of me that when a mistake was made you didn’t make any effort to inform me what was going on, you deleted posts, and even though there was a live party going on where someone could have simply said “something has gone wrong, stay tuned and we’ll get back to you as soon as we know something” they instead sat and laughed and acted like it was funny.

If you value me so little, why should I bother to value you?

I look forward to your reply. Your answer will have a large effect on whether I continue to watch Adult Swim or any other Cartoon Network programming.

Everyone knows I hate to pull rank, but sometimes I feel the need to.
It seems as if you are trying to incite a flame war here, so please stop.

And Zola, that's a good letter. I almost called to polietly ask if they had any idea if they would re-air it tonight, but I decided not to call a bunch of Drunks, who are already sick of hearing about Big O for the night.

Well obviously if it was a prank they would have said so. And somebody mentioned that at the webcam thing they said it was a mistake and they will fix it. Thats enough for me. Perhaps if people hadnt gotten pissed at them they would have apologized. Now that they know theyve pushed your buttons i wouldnt be surprised if they picked up the ball and ran with it. It wont be that long of wait. Watch some Cowboy Bebop till then.

Great stuff, Zola. I have been prowling the Adult Swim boards, waiting patiently for a response as well as being one of the voices of reason among Big O fans...and I will be terribly angered if I don't get an acceptable response for what is going on. I will definately put this in writing.

It is important to point out, not only how terrible of a mistake this was (or, if it's a joke, how horrible a joke), but how poorly it was handled. I couldn't give less of a damn if they're all at their wonderful "webcam party", their duty first and foremost is to their viewers, and there should have been an official statement apologizing if it were a mistake, pointing out it was a joke if it were such, or at least addressing the situation. I personally haven't seen the webcam (I'm afraid of what I'll see), but I've heard they didn't address the situation until recently, and even then it was poorly done.

Now I'm hearing that they're yelling at the angered Big O fans. If this is true, I'm afraid I will lose all my pretences of being calm and explode. I have not exploded often, but I must say, it is not a pretty sight. (Of course I wouldn't explode here, but rather in a letter AND an e-mail AND a telephone call).

In other news, it's still Stripes. Time to head to bed. If I don't find acceptable excuses in the morning from Adult Swim, they WILL have Hell to pay.

But yeah...a pity, really. I was looking so forward to "The Show Must Go On"...
