My Schwarzwald Theory… (possible spoiler)

Hmm.....I think you're right.

Doesn't Schwarzwald seem like a perfect candidate for a true Deus ex Machina? That fits quite well with the entire show. Roger told Alan that Duo was incomplete....perhaps that's what it was doing at the end of the first bout. It may have been able to take in some of Schwarzwald's mentaility before O began to total it, then, with its final breaths, it tried to fulfill Schwarzwald's wish of destroying Paradigm HQ.

"Doesn't Schwarzwald seem like a perfect candidate for a true Deus ex Machina?"

Good point! I did not think of that. (Ponders.) God, that would be great! Roger owing Schwarzwald! Ha!

Figured this would be a good place for the first post, so here goes nothing. I’ve been milling over these theories on Schwarzwald for a few days now that the second season is over and thought I’d post them to get some feedback from other fans, keep in mind, these are just theories I’ve come up with, so I’m open to criticism.

1. For this theory, I am dealing with the eventual truth that Schwarz came to and his ability to pilot Big Duo. I’ve got two ideas on this:

A. Schwarzwald was another of Gordon Rosewater’s tomatoes. Throughout Big O, the only people that had the capacity to pilot the Bigs were people who had memories from the past, namely the tomatoes (i.e. Roger, Alan, and Alex). Roger and Alex both are confirmed tomatoes and since it seemed that the Union was born from the outcast tomatoes, Alan was probably one too. That only leaves Schwarzwald unaccounted for and I’d at least put some money on the fact that Schwartz had some kind of memory implant from the tomato project. That also poses the question as to whether Schwarzwald was a success like Roger or a failure like the other Union tomatoes. Since we’ve seen with the unsuccessful Domaneuses of Alex and Alan, the Bigs tend to merge with the pilots and the success of Roger to stay independent, but linked with Big O; I’d also bet that Schwarzwald was a successful tomato. In addition, there was never any indication that Schwarzwald was not born and raised in Paradigm City, which would make him part of the Union. Much like Roger, Schwarz seemed to be a native of Paradigm, so I would say that Schwarzwald may be a successful tomato of Gordon Rosewater.

B. Schwarzwald discovered Big Venus in the underground. I would figure that Schwarzwald began searching for the truth when he was still normal (i.e. not a mummy). Something had to happen that would make Schwarzwald a tad unstable and force him to hide his face. I propose that while he was still Michael Seebach, he stumbled upon Big Venus in the underground. Seebach may have then attempted to see what he could learn from the Megadeus since there can’t be much doubt that he at least knew about Big O and that it must have been connected to the past. I’m also basing this off the assumption that Big Venus can only be piloted by the one that is destined to reset Paradigm (Angel) and rejected Seebach, burning him to create Schwarzwald. Perhaps, though, Schwarz managed to get at least something out of Big Venus that would allow him the knowledge of how to pilot a Megadeus and find the Archetype and Big Duo. Otherwise, it could be hard to explain how a newspaper reporter would have the knowledge of how to pilot a Megadeus.

2. The second theory, with this I’m making kind of a big jump here, but I think it works, is about the real identity of Schwarzwald/Michael Seebach. I propose that Schwarzwald is actually Roger Smith. The android assembly line of Roger Smiths seems to hint that after each Roger is destroyed in the reset, a new one takes his place, creating an endless cycle of life and death centering on Roger Smith. However, regardless of what Paradigm City really is, one would think that the director(s) would try not to have an infinite loop, so something needs to change to allow for an eventual escape from the loop. As a Computer Science major, using a for-loop example, the best way to do that is to increment your index after each trip through the loop, namely Roger Smith. Here’s where it gets to the Schwarzwald connection.
A. The Roger Smith of the previous reset, probably the first reset by my thought, was placed into the role of Michael Seebach, but with the latent memories of his life as Roger Smith and the contract with Gordon Rosewater. Subconsciously, Seebach sought the truth so he could fulfill his contract with Rosewater.
B. At some point in his search, an undefined event made him into Schwarzwald and began to shake loose his memories as Roger Smith that would allow him to become the Domaneus of Megadeus. It was a slow process as apparent by Schwarzwald not fully understanding the manner in which the Megadeuses worked when Big Duo acted on its own.
C. This would also go a long way to explain his willingness to trust Roger enough to send him a letter with some of his findings after his apparent death. In their previous encounter, Schwarzwald seemed to not be too fond of Roger. This could be a combination of jealousy at Roger for living his life and some kind of self-degradation to get Roger to realize what is happening concerning Alex Rosewater.
D. Roger managed to translate ‘Schwarzwald’ from German pretty fast. This does show a knowledge of the German language that could link the two together. Even further, ‘Schwarzwald’ translated is ‘Black Forest.’ This could be a subtle hint at what Schwarzwald is in Paradigm. Black can be linked immediately to Roger’s penchant for black clothing. Forest though, that could be a hint that perhaps he is one of many? One tree in a forest of Roger Smiths? Maybe, if someone wants to make a suggestion here, I’m more than open for it.
E. The fact that Schwarzwald was able to pilot Big Duo without merging like Alan/Big Duo and Alex/Big Fau also hints at a larger connection. Roger was the only real Domaneus in the series and managed to stay separate from Big O, but have a connection to him. The same can be said of Schwarzwald and Big Duo, as Schwarzwald seemed to speak to Alan Gabriel when he was expelled from Big Duo.
F. To wrap up this idea, the letter from Schwarzwald to Roger is the incrimination of the index. Readies Roger for the events to follow before the loop completes and begins again. Each time though, Roger gets better at his final negotiation, eventually leading to the end of the loop and a time when the Paradigm program will run to its completion.

I'll be posting this also on my blog site, bigfau.blogspot.com if anyone wants to link to it.

*stares and skims above posts*

hu... THOSE ROGER SMITH DORIDS IN EPIOSDE 26 ARE NO ANDRIODS!!! THEY ARE TOYS DAMN IT!!!!

hu...

ok anyway... here i go agian...

Schwarzwald is considared immoratal... right? yes... yes he is...
Now to become immortal... your mind and existance cannot be interfeared with... now...

I beleive that schwarzwald really has no body...or atleast not a premenent one... he can create and illusion that he is phyicly there...
what ever he found... whatever led him to "god"... must have had a great impact on the way he sees paradigm...

He has no real body... that explaines his crazy escapes from no where...

Now how did he become immortal? Well... it must have been a combination between "god" (the archtype) and well... the stories called memories...

God must have made him relive such events... or these stories as we now know... but he never knew the full truth... never knew about venus until he fused with big duo... a holy guardian of the unknown past. He relived these flase events... thought e knew what had happened... and than wanted to use the same power of the past to show them what it was that changed us.... and meaby even want to reset us like they did in the past...

"god" must have told him meany secarets of the world and with his body destoryed from living the past... his soul was strong evough to carry on... and he continued as a goast wandering the streets speading such memories...

It was never aware until he fused with duo and had learned the truth.

Gah... i need to find my older posts with schwarzwald... i had so many things in them that might be little clearer...

I know the feeling (about college).

Anywho, I still saw Schwarzwald's speech as Big Duo ascended as simply the monologue of a dead man. Perhaps the point of hearing him speak is that we connect his personality to Duo's. Perhaps Duo does have a part of him (I subscribe to the theory that the two are just similar, in the way Roger and Big O are connected without "downloading" Roger).

I think crashing into the lights was the perfect way to go out (no pun intended). We assume, from Schwarzwald's speech in Act 12, that since he knows the Bigs choose their pilots, he must be the chosen pilot of Big Duo (at least until it leaves after the fight). So perhaps Duo, either controlled or in the vein of Schwarzwald, crashed into the lights as a way of uncovering some sort of truth. Think about it...remember the reaction everyone had when Big Duo crashed there and the lights were first revealed? How significant and totally mind-blowing it was? That certainly echoes our boy...

Perhaps, when mixed with Seebach's unquenchable desire to know the truth and the memories of another pilot, the Schwarzwald we know and love was born in Seebach's unconscious. After his accident with the Prototype, Schwarzwald was unleashed. I need to think about some things, then I'll post some more stuff about Schwarzy.

schwarzwald is the apparitional voice of the city, while the Bigs are voices of the gods sometimes arguing in deus ex machina style as well.

- greek play- those masks they wore to evoke tone and feeling i.e. the crying Bigs face plates except for Fau who doesnt cry but is angry.

symbolic? i think so.

ironically im actually waiting until we hear Big O's true voice for the first time.

personally i think schwarz saw the truth a long time ago and it scared him, and Big Duo decided it was fit to live in that world anymore so it destroyed itself and uncovered everything it stood for.

I kinda like your theory of Schwarzwald taking over Alans body. I doubt that they are the same person for two reasons. First if Alan was Schwarzwald why does he not act like him at all? Shouldnt Alan be obessed with the truth if he is really Schwarzwald under his mask. Your idea that Schwarzwald is andorid is pluasible but I dont think he is just due to the burning but maybe. Secondly Alan shows up before we know that Schwarzwald as we know him is gone.

A possible theory on why Schwarzwald died that I just thought up is that Angel got sick of him meddling in the play. Since she was the director she simply decleared him dead. He shows up again in Duo because Duo stilled wanted its old master or he was still in the programming somewhere.

You know...the monologue Schwarzwald had throughout Act 25 COULD be part or even the whole contents of the letter he sent to Roger.

Imagine Michael Seebach typing it on his typewriter until the line "The true memories...they are-". At that point, he could have possibly went insane due to his self-revelation and thus became the Schwarzwald we all came to know and love/hate/etc.

Many of Schwarzwald's episodes are non-linear, so that is very possible.
