I agree the manga is quite different from the anime. It doesn’t really seem like an adaptation to the anime, its seems like an alternate reality for the big o. |
Yeah, one thing that really seems to stick out to me is that Dorothy and Roger's relationship in the manga is nothing like in the anime.
Not like I'm complaining or anything. I love the artwork in the manga. It has some very nice character pieces.
Although Dorothy's not even the same person in the manga, neither is Angel and I don't think either one of them is in love with Roger, which is something that's rather important in the anime. Dastun and Norman seem very much like their anime counterparts. Norman's more developed in the manga. And aside from a few little differences his attitude Roger's basically the same guy.
It's interesting reading the manga because you're not really sure what to expect from the characters.

Is themanga just a book version of the show, or are they entire differnent "adventures" than the show. i am thinking about buying one, even though I hate to read. Isn't it more like a backwards comic book with a lot of pages. If so, I have one of Lupin III

The comic/manga was created to complement the show, not to copy it. In fact, I think in Japan, the comic started coming out a little before the show. Because of this, the author, not wanting to ruin anything, didn't introduce Dorothy in the comic until after the first episode of the show came out.
Except for some similar stories in the beginning, namely involving the introduction of Dorothy, the stories are mostly different. If it weren't for those similar stories, you can almost view the comic as containing filler stories that happen between the show episodes. Or a parallel universe where Dorothy looks like she's 12 and Roger tolerates her as the maid of his home.
The stories are almost always Roger-centric, so many other supporting characters such as Dorothy or Norman are given extremely small exposure. I kind of think the script of the comic is a bit lacking compared to the show. The comic story plots are pretty straightforward and resolve quickly... sometimes seeming almost action-oriented. And the characters are lacking in depth or background. I kind of suspect this is due to a limit in the number of pages allowed for each story. This is surprising since it's usually the book form of a story that has more depth and material than the on-screen version. I think the author was use to doing comics more oriented to a younger crowd and he even remarked that Big O featured his first adult main character.
But the extra stories do add more background material for the world of paradigm city. And there are some new nuggets to be found about the main characters and big o (he has some extra cool weapons in the comic).
It's funny, but if I read the comic before knowing about the show, then I would not have been excited about seeing it. I wonder if this happened to the Japanese audience? But I have just read volume 5 and the story is getting much better so that is a good sign. I hope they bring out the remaining two 'lost memory' volumes.

That's how they are published in Japan. Some of the manga that have been translated into English keep the same layout, others have the pages mirror-imaged so that the story reads from left to right and the pages as in Western books.

A friend of mine who works for an anime/comic shop and is a huge Big O fan told me there's a rumor VIZ won't bring out the "Lost Memory" volumes because not enough of Vols 1-6 of the Big O were sold.
All I can think is we need to let VIZ know, both through our dollars and by polite requests, that we want to see more of our favorite hero's adventures.

I just finished vol 6 and THERE HAS TO BE MORE! It seems like they tried to jam a whole season into one volume and many of the bits got lost. I will have to write to VIZ and ask for them to bring out the Lost Memory volumes. Here is the contact info I got from VIZ.com:

Someone mentioned that the Japanese original had a gallery section... what's with that?
And for giggles, here is the author's, Hitoshi Ariga, homepage:

Anyone know what's he's doing these days and why is he always so tired (as portrayed in the mini-comic in the back of each volume).

I went to three bookstores that I checked, but none of them had them. Do you guys no of any other type of store that might have them except bookstores. Thanks

I got 1 - 5 from overstock.com. $8.49 each with $3 shipping for the whole order. Got it in less than a week, though for some reason, book 1 took an extra week. There are coupons that you might be able to use to get like $5 off:

You know, you can always order it....then go back a week latter and pick it up. besides, if you order at suncost you get 10 % of the price of the book. So do that insted, because they might not get it for a really long time....
Just helping out....

Yeah, I know. But if they're on amazon's schedule they'll have it Friday. They're usually pretty good that way. And I like to flip through them before buying usually.
I just though it might be a good place for DOA SOBF to look

I just read a summary of the stories in Lost Memory vol 1. and it looks to be awesome! It seems like a natural continuation from Vol 5 and not a crash-cram-stop like Vol 6. And Dorothy finally becomes part of the plot and her relationship with Roger seems to be developing. Which would be faster, for me to learn to read Japanese or for VIZ to bring it over (which is I hope is not 'never')?

I bought my first two at a Barnes & Noble but bought 3-5 at a comic store. I've been calling around for 6 in my area. One had it come and go(ARG!) the others have it on order or will put it on order for me. I really have a hard time believing the comic stores in the South Bay can be so lame. The only one that has it NOW is 20 miles away. I could drive I guess.....
The manga is different from the anime, but I like it! I enjoy looking at the art. I'm going to play with one image in Photoshop that I found most interesting.
