I second that.

Are we getting Lost Memory in english?

That would be fabulous. The original Big O manga was a little disappointing, but Lost Memory looks like a lot of fun. Ariga seems to have matured a lot since the first manga. He's taken more risks with the characters, attempted to explain that sudden jump in manga Dorothy and Roger's relationship between volumes one and two of the original manga, and the art is a little more edgey. It would be fantastic if we could get it.

Hopely, not filpped.

Where may I find Lost Memories. Please tell me!
Dork 04-07-2005 02:16 PM
You can find vol. 1 of Lost Memories at animenation.com. They used to have vol. 2 as well but they stopped carrying it.

I mangaged to find a copy of Big O original manga vol. 6 in Japanese but I want to get a few others in Japanese as well.

Does anyone know where I could get the original Big O manga in Japanese?

edit: Ha. I think I may have found the solution to both our problems. Sasugabooks. Do any of you have any experience with this place?

thanks dork
ps.are you getting a neon big o sign too?
Dork 04-07-2005 11:19 PM
No, I'm not getting a sign. Mainly I just keep thinking that it's something my cousin would do. I love him and all, but he's a dork.

$35 for volumes 1-5 of Big O in Japanese is not bad at all. I already bought Lost Memory and vol. 6 in Japanese so it would perfectly round out that part of my collection. I'm going to wait to see how my auction on ebay does tomorrow. If I end having to pay too much for this one book I'll just hold out on the manga for a little while. Also bought Arrested Development and another Japanese textbook today Crying My poor bank account.

yeah and maybe the manga might explain somethings from the big o cartoon that we don't get still. maybe a slight possible hint of season three would be awesome too! Cool

I have to agree with Dork on saying that the Manga is completly diffrent from the Anime and that you won't get much out out the manga for the show

Here are a few scans from Big O: Lost Memory I took today. I'll try to post more for you guys. Big Grin

Here's something interesting I noticed, one page from Lost Memory looks very similar to a page from the last Big O manga.

Volume 6:

Lost Memory
Peeps Bucket 06-21-2005 12:03 AM
Yay! I just bought the first two volumes at a local Borders store. Too bad they didn't have any more. I guess I'll just order the rest off of Viz.
Faus_fist 07-06-2005 02:06 AM
In the Fight between The bigs in Volume four I actually thought the action was better. The only thing that killed it was rocket hands.

And OMG the dialouge was horrible especially Swartzwald's "There it is the other Big Thing." WTF is that?
Chas 07-19-2005 03:05 AM
Is that "Lost Memories" thing just a one shot manga, or is the fellow still writing it? I just watched the entire anime for the first time a few days ago, and I wouldn't want to see the franchise dead already, especially considering the horrid ending it had.
Peeps Bucket 07-19-2005 03:14 AM
I finished reading all 6 volumes last week, and I've gotta say... I want English Lost Memory almost as much as I want a season 3.

Hi, I really want to get some of the big O manga books, but I'm going to have to get them over Amazon.co.uk and I'm not sure if they are worth getting or not as I'm unable to look at them before hand, do you think they are worth getting?

Ps- I found volume 1 and 2 on Amazon.co.uk before and now I can't, any pointers for finding these illusive books?

The thing you have to keep in mind when buying the manga and reading it is that it's not the anime. Many animes are based on mangas but Big O was not. The Big O was developed to sell of line of toys. The manga and the anime were started at the same time and written indepent from one another. In other words neither the manga or anime teams answered to each other.

Both stories start off on similar ground, same city, same faces and names. A city that has lost it's memory, a Bond/Batman hybrid of a negotiator, a stoic android, a mysterious blonde. Hiroshi Ariga, who wrote the manga, took the direct approach with these elements and wrote the story that seemed most obvious. In Ariga's Big O Roger Smith is a batman-esque negotiator with a fast car and a giant robot, Angel has Bond vixen writen all over her -she's beautiful, she's untrustworthy, and in the end she's just as untrustworthy as she seems the moment you first see her, and Dorothy, and here is perhaps the biggest disappointment of the manga, is just an android in the Data sense, she has no comprehension of human emotions, she's utterly boring and is rarely seen.

Konaka, the head writer for the anime, had a little more fun with the elements he was given. Konaka creates unclichéd characters by playing archetypes off one another and bending the rules. Bond and Batman were at their cores jerks and so's Roger. Instead of ignoring this truth of suave action adventure ladies' men Konaka presents Roger's haughty attitude as a negative trait one that our hero learns to curb. Roger is the anti-superhero. He's an ordinary man in extraoridinary curcumstances, and his reactions are human. Dorothy is. . . Dorothy. She's a snarky lovestruck and emotionally stunted girl who happens to be an android. Angel, the mysterious femme fatale, is discovered to have a soul and integrity and a heart that can be broken. Konaka's story can not be outlined in a few sentences. It is nuanced, unexpected, and brilliant.

For those who enjoy the more technical aspects of life Ariga's manga shows more detail of how Big O works (again, transferring this over to the anime is tricky ground but it may be of help in fanfics). The artwork is lovely and Beck is in almost every chapter. The manga's main characters however are disappointing and , I find, impossible to enjoy esspecially Ariga's Dorothy and Angel (even calling them 'Dorothy' and 'Angel' seems wrong). It has a few cute one shot stories but it's best to think of the manga as a glorified doujinshi.

Keep in mind if you buy the manga it may very well end up on your shelf unread. Make sure you're okay with what you're getting into before you spend your money on it. That being said, the pictures are nice to look at.

Geez,I really need to give those suckers a reread. Truth be told I really did enjoy the mangas soooo much and remember how happy I was when the final volumes were released and quite honestly I could see myself maybe getting back into big o if I can get my hands on Lost Memories. I remember finding some info on it like right when the first news of its release came out and it blew my mind, but within a month or so my obsession with Big O kinda fizzled out. Anyways, hope the manga thing keeps going for Big O even if there isn't a chance for another televised form of the show.

I think Kajime Yatate and Chiaki J. Konaka should use manga novels to continue the storyline of Big O if they can't get another season or a movie deal.
ScionofDestiny 04-04-2006 12:25 PM
I would have to agree with you - a manga or novel to continue Big O would be fine by me. I just want the storyline and characters. How about a manga novel about the time before the Event too?

Hmm - Dorothy doesn't have a concept of what it is to be human? Emotion is generally triggered by thought, so if she can think on a sentinent sense then she can feel emotion. Generally, the more intelligent we are the more diverse and complex are emotions become.

Dorothy from the anime is much cooler than the one from the manga though - I agree on that. Same principle applies everywhere though.
