Manga Discussion

The villians in the manga certainly fall on different parts of the 'evil' spectrum compared to those in the anime. In the anime, Alex and Alan are definitely the major bad guys. Beck is more comical than bad and in the end, he may have even had a little change of heart. But in the manga, Beck turns out to be the major evil one. Dorothy's father is not accidentally killed; Beck kills him directly. And he just kills that guy in volume 3. Then he turns into that freaky phantom with hollow eyes. In Lost Memories, he continues to haunt Roger, trying to drive him to insanity. In a sense, the manga Beck is comparable to Alan in the anime.
So how do you like your Beck? The anime or manga version?

There are 6 books in total. Afterwards, the author created two more books that fit in between books 5 and 6, but those have not been translated to English yet, if ever.

At least you get the art gallery missing from the english release. I just sent a postcard to VIZ asking about the Lost Memory volumes and also asked that they include the missing gallery into those future volumes.

Oh for giggles, here are the Japanese covers for the first six volumes. Notice that they match the U.S. covers exactly, though the U.S. covers seems to have more saturated colors and a shift in the logo on vol. 6 to not hide Big Fau's head. One annoying thing is that the U.S. release has the same spine graphic for vol. 4 and 5. I wonder if the Japanese release is the same.

R-Umino, anything missing from the other english volumes? Strange they would skimp out on the latest volume unless they really want to have nothing to do with Big O as quickly as possible.

You know, with all the covers side by side, they look just like one of those color bars that are everywhere right now. I wait only for someone to post this in their LiveJournal with "The Big O Is Love" typed underneath.

I have the Japanese volumes 1 through 6 and lost memory 1 and 2 and the spine does not have the graphic all it has is the big o in Japanese and the volume numbers.
I really hope viz translates lost memory so that void can be filled between 5 and 6 especially since it seems to begin right after that fight with Beck and 2 seems to end close to where vol 6 begins, also I think Dorothy and Roger seem to have more time together in these books

plus I am curious about one scene where Dorothy and Roger are in the griffon having a conversion and I think he’s got one of those sweat drops on his head so I wonder what they are talking about.
I think volume 6 is begging for a sequel especially with that ending. Hey! Maybe if they make a season 3 they'll make a sequel because it sure seems like they could tell some more stories.

Well I'll take a stab at giving you an overview since I cant read japanese so heer I go.
chapter 6 electric seep in the crable
spoiler (highlight to read):
lost memory volume 2 picks up where vol 1 leaves off with Dorothy in her gown that if my memory is correct Roger got for her and Roger is in his pajamas and they're in the Big O and fighting a big robotic sheep witch they manage to defeat but when the sheep blows up Big O catches a container in his hand. Roger and Dorothy go and check it out and open it up and they find a baby hooked up in that container and it ends with Dorothy holding the baby and Roger standing beside her in the palm of Big O and almost looks like Big O is looking at them.
Chapter 7 message
I'm not really sure how to describe this chapter so ill just hit interesting points.
spoiler (highlight to read):
Dorothy gives a large bouquet of flowers to Norman and Roger makes a shocked face. Dorothy and Roger also end up in a room where there are a bunch of signs with certain letters highlighted that spell out lost memory.
chapter 8 old movie star
spoiler (highlight to read):
Dorothy and Norman have bandages wraped around there heads along with just about everyone else. Apparently there’s a movie called the invisible man directed by an M Seebach. There appear to be flash backs of shwartzwald and Big Duo. Also Roger ends up in a junk yard where someone that looks like shwartzwald filming a Big Duo that looks like it was cobbled together out of junk so Roger calls Big O and one punch sends it to pieces and the guy that looks like shawartzwald is just dressed like him and he got sent to the hospital I think he’s just a old movie star.
Chapter 9 revival
Looks like this chapter starts right after chapter8
spoiler (highlight to read):
Every body’s still wearing bandages on their heads and mobs of these people are drawing pictures of Big Duo on walls. Angel pays a visit to Gordon Rosewater.Roger and Dorothy end up in a crowd of these bandaged people and a giant sphere shows up and angel and Alex Rosewater are watching this. Big O takes on the sphere witch has a force field witch takes roger a while to beat but he manages to destroy it in the end the explosion causes the bandages to be blown off of everyone. Dorothy and angel have a conversation at the end.
Chapter 10 yesterday once more
spoiler (highlight to read):
I believe a homeless gives Dorothy a kitten witch she takes home while she reads a book on cats the kitten scratches the crap out of Rogers face. At one point we see Dorothy playing the piano and Roger sitting in a chair playing with the kitten. Theirs also a scene where Dorothy is running around with a duster and the kitten is playing with her. Dorothy goes to see the home less man one more time. The last pages have the kitten sleeping with Roger, and Dorothy walking with the city and domes behind her
The End continued in The Big O vol 6
Ariga has a two page comic. one page has picture of Dorothy in what looks like that scuba diving suit she wore in the show must go on, the other page has Roger in what looks like a uniform and helmet. There are a few more strips and pages drawn by others.
Well I hope that helps I didn't get into any real detail or anything but maybe this will gives you an Idea of whats going on.By the way animenation.com has lost memory volumes 1 and 2 listed on their site, thats where I got mine at,they also have the artbook and the big o novel.
I hope all that makes sense.

That was great. Thanks! When you say artbook, did you mean this:
Big O Official Guide Book
Get the inside scoop on The Big O with this extensive, complete reference guide to the TV series. Full color pages include a gallery of promotional art and Japanese home video covers, rarely seen prototype character and mecha concept sketches, and character guides. Monochrome pages include an episode guide for the entire 26 episode series, production sketch art, staff and cast interviews and more.
Also, do you know if the novel is a graphic novel or all text?
Wow, BigMega, that suonds like the coolest volume yet!
Manga Dorothy gets a Pero! How cute.
How much was that volume? I'll bet shipping was a be-otch.
------------------------------
Hmm, I went to that site you mentioned BigMega. I've half-way gone through check out but with the method of shipping I selected it says the shipping and handling is about $6. Uh, how long did they take to get to you? Assuming you ordered them from that place that is. . .
