Well, while as Cosmic Era continues on, a new Alternate Universe emerges by the director of Full Metal Alchemist in Japan this October, and it's our own AD calender. It's called Kido Senshi Gundam 00 (pronounced "double O") or "Mobile Suit Gundam 00."

"The story of Gundam 00 will take place in 2307 of our modern Western calendar system--which is different from the fictional calendar systems adopted in the old Gundam series--when people are utilizing the sun as a new energy resource. The world is divided into two major powers that are struggling against each other for hegemony, as was the case in the real world in the late 20th century.
The main characters of Gundam 00 are four young people, called Gundam Meister, who operate Gundam robots. The young people are members of a militia called Solestal Being that aims to step into the fray between the two major powers with their powerful robots, hoping to end the wars and achieve world peace."

Well, from the various articles I've read, it sounds like a modern version of Gundam Wing melded with more contemporary political issues. I don't really like the idea of setting "Gundam" in AD, but it's acceptable. Script-wise, it should be pretty solid since it's got the director of Full Metal Alchemist at the helm. It's intended to be darker than the SEED universe, which is good. While I applaud the overall older look of the characters, some still look a little more effeminate than I'd like. Why can't the bishounen pilot just be a girl? That pilot is drawn too much like a girl to not be one. Some of the characters' names border on rediculous/annoying: Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Paptism?!?! And, the color pallete so far still looks too SEED-like with its brightness. The mecha seem OK. They're sort of plain, but they have sort of a Turn-A Syd Mead influence that make them different. I'm not super-excited--it doesn't look as strong off the bat as some other AU series--but I'm not totally turned off by it either. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out...
However, this means my dreams of an "After War: Gundam X" US release with an English dub are dashed yet again, I think. It's a crime, I tell you. Gundam X deserves a release--I mean, they already remastered it in Japan a few years back, so bring it overseas! Sometimes I get a sinking feeling that it will never come over stateside. That'd be a big, sad loss IMO.
