Happy Easter

To those who celebrate it, have yourselves a lovely Easter Sunday tomorrow. That's really all I wanted to say to everyone, though... let's discuss Easter while we're at it? Could VG Cats be right in their explanation of the Easter Holiday...? For those who do not know...

Also, enjoy your weekend.

Christianity has a great history of co-opting the festivals, holidays and symbols of the pagans they converted. Smart move, really...keeps folks in the fold when they can still party when they're used to.

Why is it called Easter? After Eoster (or Ostara, to the german Celts, before they were forced to Britain by Julius Caesar), the goddess of fertility worshipped by pagan tribes.
The word Easter has its roots in greek, and is similar to later words like oestrus (Frenzy, where 'estrus', and 'estrogen' comes from, meaning the frenzy of an animal when it comes into heat), and aus (to shine), showing that the pagans associated Eoster with the rising of the sun (which symbolizes daily rebirth). It's where we get the word "East" today. She also symbolized the vernal equinox, or the rebirth of spring after winter..that's why it's usually celebrated the first sunday after the full moon after the equinox...which can be up to three weeks away from Passover.

Eoster is associated with the rabbit, as they've always been...uh, prolific. Pretty obvious symbol of fertility and the abundance of new life with the coming of spring. Eggs, also a symbol of fertility.

Eoster may have been derived from an even more ancient babylonian myth surrounding Queen Semiramis, who became called "Ishtar". Her son, Tammuz, was killed by a wild pig, so a pig was eaten every year after 40 days of mourning, during which no meat was eaten (Lent). That's why ham is traditionally eaten on Easter Sunday.

mmmmm. Ham.

Indeed. Bunnies are so cute it's frightening, is it not? Especially that rabbit with the very large pointy teeth. Him I can do without.
