Is your Internet connection really as fast as it should be?

So is your Internet connection as fast as your ISP says it is, or are you being ripped off?
www.speedtest.net
I know there are a lot of other connection speed tests out there, but I like this one since it automatically records and averages your results and it also compares it with the averages for your State and ISP. Try it with the 3 closest servers and pick the best one.
My best results:
The average for my state with my current ISP is around 4137kb/s download so my connection is a bit slower than it should be, but mine is going through an older wi-fi router so that might have something to do with it.

My internet is poor in the evenings i.e. around 5-6pm the speed suddenly plunges. It never used to be like this, I blame it on Virgin Media who merged with our old but still lingering ISP, NTL who my dad works for.
So in the evening on weekdays and practically all day on weekends, it is far slower than it should be with high ping. I keep bugging my dad to bug other people in Virgin Media to admit there is a problem and do something. Looking at these stats it may seem not too bad of a problem but the point is it's an unreliable service and pinged up.

My connexion gets problems. I chose maybe the wrong server. Anyway I get a problem now with my router. It is 1kB/sec.

Ppppbbbbppppbbttttt... My interwebs blows. It has even choked off my once robust
Red vs. Blue and AMV downloading habits.

Holy crap, that is a HELL of a lot faster than I expected. It seems to be a lot better during the day, when fewer people are home. Stupid dorm innernets.

That 12Mbps refers to the speed that your modem is capable of, not your internet connection.
Most broadband connections don't exceed 5Mbps. Anything faster tends to get very expensive.

Ah, thanks for the info paul1290.
Shame it's pricey, I'd love to be connected at those speeds....... one day I suppose.

Well my internet is better now, I think Virgin Media have finally acknowledged and done something about it, hopefully it'll stay at this speed. No more monster lag for now!

Wow, I never knew Virgin did internet, too. Is there anything they don't do?

Probably not! Internet/Telecoms, air travel, space travel (soon), trains, shops, yep they have their fingers in many pies. Richard Branson wants your money!

They're called Virgin for irony.
According to my dad, the airline is awesome. Especially sine he had just gotten off an Air India flight.
I wonder how good old AOL dialup would score on this.
