I haven't seen Bleach. I know little to absolutely nothing about the series. I do realise that the manga was first published in Shonen Jump, which leads me to believe that it is aimed at children, most likely male. Regardless of the violent or sexual content, I assume, like other Shonen Jump series, that the plot is fairly simple, the characters relatively stereotypical, and the dialogue elementary. Keep in mind I say this being a huge One Piece fan. I realise that the show is aimed at a certain audience with a younger age demographic but I love it nonetheless.
The point I'm really trying to make is that I think people overestimate how "adult" they think Adult Swim should be. When I first discovered Adult Swim, I thought of it as an alternative to Toonami. After all, it took control of Toonami's Midnight Run Schedule block. Remember the types of anime Adult Swim had in the beginning: Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, Pilot Candidate, Cowboy Bebop (that's all I can remember as of now). Aside from Bebop, I wouldn't say that the plot of any of these was "mature" or "adult". In fact, I am reluctant to call any anime "adult". There are many that can be enjoyed by various age groups. Sure, there are some that are more complex than others. However, to expect Adult Swim to show only "adult" anime (when in the past they have shown Case Closed, Lupin III, Inu Yasha, et al) is a bit unrealistic.
The way I see it, there is no way CN can put Bleach on Toonami without making a copious amount of cuts. Their solution: put it on Adult Swim in an attempt to boost ratings, as many teens will tune in to watch, just as I did in 8th grade to watch Bebop.
As for all this arguing about Japan and America: While I can't dredge up any concrete facts that Japanese children are "more mature" than kids in America (in fact, this
website probably proves that they aren't), the
fact is that what is acceptable media for Japanese children would be considered "mature" for American children. That is a fact and I think Cerpin Taxt gave enough evidence of that. He was not trying to prove whether or not they were mentally or physically more mature. I think you idiots were arguing about the wrong thing.
Besides, whose to say when maturity occurs, and furthermore, applies to an entire age, culture, or nationality? It develops individually and is probably more of a result of the parents combined with personal biological development (i.e. intelligence).
NOW. How is Bleach anyway? Is it good? Should I watch it when it plays on Adult Swim?
Jebus.
