Eh, it's all bullocks to me. Besides OAV looks better than OVA.

... Whatevs! Embarrassed Sweatdrop

I was deciding which one to use on my new thread and I went for the one I saw first in a search.

Zap's right. It is actually OVA, OAV is just the typical japanophile's cream dream version. While it's the same thing, this was one of those things where I can toss the word Japanophile around, and that's always fun. Tongue
Hobodoken 03-19-2006 04:21 PM
While I agree, I have to note that a dedicated nerd could change the wiki page to say OAV, and continue to change it whenever changed back.
Sharpshooter005 03-19-2006 05:05 PM
I always thought AV was an abbreviation for audio-visual, as in AV Cables or something.

Seriously, I had no idea there was a difference between OVA and OAV, nor..did...I really ever care much. Either way its referring to the same thing.
The Baker St. Irregular 03-19-2006 08:21 PM
I'll never call it "OVA".

Never.

...So you WILL call it OVA, as that's a double negative? Hehehe.

Bah, I have to say who cares? It's confusing as heck to see two names, and OVA is easier to say as one word.

Though that brings up sexual connotations which I find completely ironic.

I've always heard that they're both correct.

And a wiki article isn't really the best resource to point towards to convince me otherwise.

Who the F cares?

Yeah. Ova means "egg". Hence ovaries, ovulation.

That's what I never liked that acronym. I think I've always used OAV. Actually I think I use whatever one comes to mind first; they're interchangeable, as others have said.

i think it's more along the lines of "who gives a damn".

and to think the space this thread is taking up could have been used for something actually interesting.

You really think so? What could be a more riveting topic than this?

My completely unfounded theory that Japan absolutely loves the military rank of "Major".

Seriously. It crops up ALOT in anime.

Evangelion: Misato is a Major

GitS: Kusanagi? Major.

Big O: Major Datsun

Fullmetal Alchemist: Isn't the highest ranking of the recurrent military characters a major?

I think there was also one in Hellsing.

So...yeah...it pops up pretty often.

(This is the alternative, yeah.)

And don't forget Major Dastun!

Oh right. Yeah I'm...pretty low on the big o fandom totem pole. I'm bad at it. Tongue

OVA stands for Original Video Animation, OAV stands for Original Animated Video, so there's really no use quibbling over which goes which way. They're probably both "right", though I've primarily seen OVA used in Japanese advertisements and such.
