Germany??

I might mention that my world history teacher once cited that Hitler was a great fan of Plato's Republic. Now the correlations that follow below may be hazy, as I am just a student and not yet an adept at philosophy, history, or politics.

Big O is based off Metropolis, but it has many roots in Plato's Republic as well - instead of going into a long-winded rant that will scare everyone away, I'll just say that Plato and Hitler don't have similarities. Hitler spent a long time listening to politics while he was in Venice, which is where he originally got his "jews are evil" and "facist is the key" ideas.

To his credit, Plato envisioned nothing like Nazi Germany. He thought that an ideal government was one where the philosophers, being the wisest, would rule ethically and well, administering perfect justice. To me it seems like one of those governments where it would be near perfect if we could get it to work, but getting to work and stay working would be next to impossible.

OH - since Hitler was listening to politics in Venice, it almost goes without saying he would have heard of or read about Plato. Plato's Republic has a lot to say about political theory.

In case anyone missed the point - Metropolis came from Germany before the shortly before the fall of the Weimar, and Nazi Germany was a very perverted, twisted image of the perfect government Plato envisioned.

Inconsequential to the point, did you know that Asimov hated the debut of the movie Metropolis? He saw it at the world's first sci-fi convention or something like that. He said it was victim of the "Frankenstein complex" - Asimov was the guy who made the Three Laws of Robotics by the way, which made something of an appearance in Big O with Dorothy, who disobeys them. Asimov disliked Metropolis because it sterotypically told the story of Frankenstein - man create robot, then robot destroy man. Asimov theorized that robots could be lovable too. Asimov cited that his favorite case beside his own books was C3PO and R2D2 from Star Wars.
