Anime gets Misdefined yet again!

Anime has been Misdefined a bunch of times. Be it in major news articals or on websites that talk about the 'dangers of anime's effect on today's youth'. But for some reason I find this pretty funny even if it's just a miss understanding.....

Canadian National Police Services Define Animé as "Adult oriented material that contains scenes depicting sexual acts."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
The Canadian National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre, a Canadian Government initiative, has created a "fact" sheet regarding hentai and anime.

The document fails to differentiate between hentai and other non-pornographic forms of anime and manga. One paragraph states:

Also, it should be noted that in Japan, adult oriented material that contains scenes depicting sexual acts is not considered pornography if the sexual content is shown to be relevant to the plot (Pornography 2005). This material, which in Western nations is referred to as animé is a growing concern among Canadian law enforcement. Although it is produced mainly in Japan, any form of animation that can be categorized as child pornography is illegal to possess in Canada . Due to its graphic content, hentai has also been used during the grooming process to lower the sexual inhibitions of children.

While another states:

Hentai can be produced in various formats including film (animé), comics (manga), and computer games (bishojo games) (Hentai 2005). As Japanese animation is a form of expression, hentai is an expression of sexual fantasy that in many cases requires animation as many of the sexual acts portrayed would be impossible to capture on film. As hentai depictions are often considered unacceptable in society, graphic artists in Asia, Europe, and North America often try to push the envelope by making their designs more extreme (Hentai 2005).

The entire document can be read here.

Thanks to Cameron for this item.

So? Will this get anime banned in Canada then else where due to a very big misunderstanding? or will they figure out that not all anime is consitered 'Hentai' and stop it before it reaches the US? You deside....

eh, this isn't the first time this has happened and doubt it will be the last. *shrug*

Pretty much everyone I know that doesn't watch anime or know anything about it calls it "gay japanese cartoon porn". I wonder what they watch on their spare time to know that such a thing exists.

It can be pretty amusing when people talk about things they don't understand. (Or take the time to understand for that matter).

Lulz. Misunderstanding. By Canadians nonetheless.

Dur, we don't like Japanese cartoons, eh? We only show our youth good animation, like Dudley Do-Right, eh?

Hey man, Dudley Do-Right was awesome! That being said, that's a pretty big misunderstanding, and I would feel pretty sorry for Canada if they dropped anime altogether, despite how strangely hilarious that would be.

What the Canadians need, is someone who is an important Canadian to tell them that they are simply having a misunderstanding about anime. That person should of course be William Shatner. And you know what? I bet he'd do it.

Whoa whoa whoa. Jay Ward's not at any fault here.

The RCMP should really stick to its other high priority duties...like making sure the radiocommunications act isn't being violated. Some people aren't directly toeing the CRTC's line, but rather, watching or listening to what they WANT to?

RED TEAM GO, RED TEAM GO! THE SUSPECT IS CONSIDERED UNARMED AND EXTREMELY NONTHREATENING!

(Seriously, they've got some pretty inane policies relating to television and radio as it is. This is just sort of a bonus)

edit: Oh speaking of that. And Dudley Do-Right. According to Wikipedia...

The Bullwinkle Show was initially banned from broadcast in Canada, due to the Dudley Do-Right segments.

If one looks really hard, one can find it.

Meh. If they ban anime because they can't see through some
simple misunderstanding, it's their loss.

They've tried to ban "Japanese Cartoon Porn" in most countries at least ten
times already, and it hasn't happened. Mostly because that's not what anime
is. If it were, they might have a bit more luck.

Although, when they speak of sexual content in anime, I can sort of
understand their point. Almost all anime has a sexual nuance or angle of
some kind. It might seem minor, or even negligible to us,
but some sensitive folks might see otherwise.

That said, they have almost ZERO hope of banning the stuff.
It's just too damned popular.
Even if they did ban it, it sure as hell wouldn't stop people from buying or
watching it. They'd just find a more clever way to obtain it.

Necessity is, after all, the mother of invention.

I think that sums it all up.

Seriously, if you accuse something of being something, you have to know what that something is, right?

It's elementary.

Oh geez thats pretty sad. And all of it because of a mere misunderstanding. Hopefully it will get resolved otherwise I know alot of Candian Fans who will be upset. Defently an interesting article though.

If they need a black market source then..well, anything I can to to sort of be a thorn in the side of the Canadian government is one of my hobbies.

If they did go to the extreme of banning it (which I doubt will happen), it would be like curing a cold by cutting off the person's head.

Hey, isn't VIZ Communications based out of Canada?
