If you liked/loved Big O, then you should treat yourself to a movie called "Dark city".
It's a live action movie but has a very definite anime feel to it. Also, it deals with a city that is actually a grand stage for a strange experiment, and people's memories and taken away, changed, altered, edited and mixed like so much paint before being put back into various people's minds.
The basic plot is thus:
The aliens built dark city to see what makes humans tick.
Last night one of us went off.
A group of dying aliens think that discovering the nature of the human soul will somehow save their race. The need to study humans to see if there is a soul that is separate from memory, and to this end abduct a group of humans and put them in a setting called dark city. (The aliens have an aversion to light, it seems.)
The take away everyone's memory, then with the aid of a human scientist (Kieffer Sutheland, in his best preformrance) begin changing and imprinting memories on people to see if there is some fundamental aspect of human nature, a soul, that transcends memory. For example, will a man who is NOT a murderer become one if given the memories of a murderer, or is there some fundamantal basis of his identity, a soul, that will keep someone who isn't a murderer from becoming one regardless of what his memory says?
Ok, I think that's enough to convince any Big O fan that dark city is a movie he ought to check out ASAP.
BTW, dark city is NOT another matrix ripoff. In fact is came out a year before the ratmix, er matrix, and some of the sets from dark city turned up in the ratmix.
