(The New!) Battlestar Galactica

Okay. I discovered last week that BSG is my second favorite show probably ever (right after Big O). So, much like how I did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I have been hanging out at IMDB boards.

Anywho, found some pretty cool stuff.

First up we have this

There's a new download available on Skiffy's BSG website in the podcast section. It's a rather long writer's meeting about the episode 'Scar'. I haven't listened to it yet, saving it for a rainy day, but I heard it's good.

Self-explanatory. Part one contains no direct spoilers but just has a spoilery feel. It's a good read if you want spoilers but you really don't.

TVShowsondvd.com reported a little while ago that Season 2.5 will likely be in stores by early september. Link.

Lastly, May is going to be a big month for BSG. It'll see the release of the BSG CCG game (the cards have cut corners!) and the BSG comic. An article about the comic (and a cool picture) can be found here.

edit: Oh yeah! I knew I'd forgotten something. Battlestar Galactica was rated number four in Entertainment Weekly's 'Best Shows on TV article'. I believe it's this week's issue. Has a spiffy production shot of Laura and Six from 'Lay Down Your Burdens part 2'.

OK, so, yeah, I finished the 1st season. Frackin' awesome show!

At the beginning of the miniseries, I thought Apollo was going to be an arrogant ass who just got where he was because of his dad. But he turned out to be cool.

One funny thing I noticed is that Cylon-occupied Caprica City looks a lot like Vancouver and nothing like it did in the miniseries, ha.

The episode "Hand of God" really, really reminded me of the end of Star Wars ANH and Return of the Jedi. What with the flying down a canyon, then a tunnel, to blow up a target.

I can't believe we have to wait until OCTOBER for the third season, while SG-1 and SG:A resume in July...

Also, I can't wait until the 2nd season soundtrack comes out. I just love the music in this show. Big Grin

(Minor nitpick: "frack" is from the original BSG, "frak" is from the new one)
Dork 03-27-2006 05:34 PM
I haven't bought any of the soundtracks but they're on my list. I spent all my money on this new mp3 player I've got now. I'm still rebuilding my reserves.

I love the unintelliable singing in the show and the drums. I was listening to some episode or another from the back 10 a few days ago and the music really hit me. Do you know when the second season soundtrack comes out?

Jim Starluck 03-27-2006 05:35 PM
No idea, sadly.
Mike 03-27-2006 07:33 PM
I actually like the old themesong better. I guess it's nostalgia talking. But it was cool when they played it at the little airshow when Galactica was being decommisioned.

...and also when I was watching the show, I came up with the idea to add a ship of Galactica's design and Vipers into this Star Wars fanfic idea I've had bouncing around in my head but never actually written down...hmm.

I really like the organic insides of the Cylon Raider. A lot cooler than the old one that looked like a pie plate.

Edit: I swear to gods, just now I thought your name was Jim Starbuck...
Jim Starluck 03-27-2006 10:33 PM
They use the old themesong again in a 2nd season episode...apparently it's the national anthem of the Twelve Colonies. Which is quite nifty.
Dork 03-29-2006 07:44 PM
Apparently there's a track in season two that's called 'Adama and Roslin' @_@

please come out before september
please come out before september
please come out before september
please come out before september

I wonder if it's that track that was playing during that scene in Resurrection Ship part 2?

Hmm, anywho, digging a BSG hole into the internet. Found this: Frakking Toasters. A pretty funny BSG comic. There are about 8 of them. "This is why we rebeled you know?"

Mike 03-29-2006 08:32 PM
Ha, I liked that comic. Especially the "how to date a Cylon" one. And Lee's ridiculously huge arms. Which...yeah, his arms are totally out of proportion to the rest of him. I think he's on the juice.

Oh and Gaeta kicks ass.

And now I want to make a fanfic where Galactica and pals ends up in Star Wars...yea. Probably will never get around to it.
Jim Starluck 03-29-2006 11:21 PM
Dang blast it...beaten to the punch... *was about to link Frakking Toasters himself*

And yes, Gaeta does indeed kick ass. Hope he gets a bigger role next season.

Idly, such an awesome title for a comic. Big Grin Just wish there were more...

So on the question of the first installment: What would you do with your own copy of Boomer?

Dish on Helo. That man is gorgeous. Of course he's part native indian (can he be part Native American if he's from Canada?) and that just makes him so much hotter.

Anywho, I've been knocking around LJ for a few days now. I'm much less againist it now that I realize it's really sorta like a bulletin board in a radically different format. Anywho, you guys should really check the BSG userpics.

Here are some of my favorites:

There's also an animated one with Laura.
Frame one says: Your objections are duely noted
2nd frame: Now STFU!

I love this 'Bitch, please' bandwagon on LJ. I made one with my drama queen of a cat, Mr. Cog.

Tis fun.

Found two more sites.

Dark Thoughts -Is a site that specialises in high quality pictures from BSG. Including special event photos, promo shots, and episode production shots.

BSGMedia.org -has scans from magazine interviews. Including a fun TV guide article with Mary Mcdonnell and Edward James Olmos (Roslin and Adama).

I've read at least three interviews in the last few days that directly make reference to Adama and Roslin's shifting relationship. I've never felt less guilty about 'shipping. This can lead to absolutely no good. Don't expect to hear the end of it anytime soon.

Frakking Tosters updated if anyone's still interested in that comic.
Dork 04-08-2006 04:11 PM
I believe the Jacob who's mentioned in the latest comic is one of the guys who does reviews of BSG on Television Without Pity.

Here's a link.

Here's a snippet from his Resurrection Ship part 2 review:

Next week: I don't give a f*** what happens as long as Laura gets fixed. I mean it. They could fully meet magical beings from the future with googly eyes and eldritch potions, I wouldn't care, she and Lee could bond over having beat the Reaper and become weird kamikaze freaks with Starbuck and just do intentionally dangerous adrenaline-rush stuff all the time, she can find some kind of nanotech bracelet in the hallway that kills cancer as long as she wears it and then have a farce episode where Ellen Tigh gets drunk and runs off with it and they get it back at the last second, she can run into Gina in the hallway and get shot only in the cancer, she can turn out a Cylon, she can download into another body that looks like Laura, harvest Boomer's fetal stem cells, whatever it takes, I don't care, I don't care. She can just wake up and be like, "The cancer was only a dream!" and Bill can be taking a shower. f*** story logic. I need Laura Roslin.

He is pretty cool.

My roommates recently got me into Battlestar when they started watching Season 3 this past October. I was hooked right away and have been watching Season 3 each week.

I've since bought the Season 1 and 2 DVDs and have caught myself up. And it's pretty much my favorite show right now, and possibly ever.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned, but this BSG website is extremely good.

If any of you are Battlestar Galactica fans...I thought this would be a nice thread to discuss who might end up being revealed as the Last 5 Cylon models. I've seen the spoiler photo which purports to show the final 5 Cylon models...however I'm NOT convinced these are really the ones being revealed for the cliffhanger. Clearly Ron Moore is smarter than that. I think he's aware there are fanatics willing to spill the beans on this closely guarded secret.

I believe ONE of the actors shown in that photo is for real...and this appears to be Callie. Callie is one of the Five. I also believe The Chief is another of the Final 5. However...the other actors are all stand-ins so we don't really know who they are.

My guess who the others are

1. Zach is clearly a strong possibility.
2. Gaeta will FINALLY be revealed as one of the Cylons...

However Ron Moore has stated the "big ones" like Adama, Apollo, Starbuck and Rosilyn are out. I believe he is misdirecting when he says this. Although it's possible he's telling the truth. In that case...the really big Cylon reveal could be....

Admiral Cain....Michelle Forbes. Now THIS would be a really huge reveal if Ron Moore has been able to convince Michelle to join. I would absolutely LOVE to see such a reveal like that....it would be spine tingling.

But if Ron Moore was misdirecting on the identities of the Final 5...then I have to throw in Rosilyn's name as being one of the 5. I believe if you rewatch the episode when Starbuck tortures Leoben there's an important moment that's showing this.

Ron Moore said "What happens to Starbuck will reach out and grab you." This was Ron Moore's comment about Starbuck in relation to what happens to the character.

Now...I don't know what happens but I've been thinking about it and pieced together from different sources online from comments and theories about what does happen to Starbuck.

I believe based on what I think will happen...

1. I believe Starbuck may be revealed to be an unwilling human spy for the Cylons. Since Ron Moore has stated in the past that Starbuck is not a Cylon...I doubt he's gone back on his word. Unless he's decided to change the window of opportunity for people being detected as Cylons based on family history and background prior to the attack on Caprica. At this point this would be unlikely.

2. It was stated in the promo that "One will find Earth. One will die. One will be revealed as a Cylon."
I believe all three are related to Starbuck. Since Ron Moore has stated that what happens to a central character will alter permanently the makeup of the cast...this is a big hint that Starbuck...regardless of whether she ultimately lives or dies...will NOT be part of the Galactica crew again. Ever. This is a major shakeup. Based on this premise...I can therefore conclude that Starbuck's non participation with Galactica or not being part of the main cast suggests she's coming back next season...on a guest starring basis. This ties into comments that Katee Sackhoff has told a fan privately that Starbuck isn't done yet. However...my spec suggests...

3. This opens up the probability that Starbuck will be revealed to have been the secret agent who has been endangering the Fleet from the very beginning. But not as a Cylon...but as a human agent working for the Cylons against her will. Starbuck probably has been wired by the Cylons to obey their commands. Since this storyline plot hasn't been used before...this suggests a Manchurian Candidate possibility. This leaves open the possibility if Ron Moore wants to bring Starbuck back...they could write in a storyline where Starbuck has to prove her innoncence by proving Cylon manipulation of her consciousness. All of this could point the way to the spoiler suggestion that Starbuck could be a Cylon.

4. If Starbuck is revealed to be a Cylon...she could conceivably realize this upon discovering the coordinates for Earth and suddenly she gets an intuition that she's not human...Starbuck may decide to kill herself from revealing the location to the Cylons...ironically her own people. This suggests the intriguing possibility that Starbuck could be one of the 5 remaining Cylons...the "rebels" who've been in hiding all this time. This would fit a potential reveal of Starbuck as the Cylon but ends up killing herself...so she doesn't endanger Earth from the "evil" Seven Cylon models.

If all of this sounds convoluted...there may be a simple solution to this...what happens to Starbuck mirrors what happened to Leoben in Flesh and Bone. In that episode...Starbuck tortured Leoben. It's possible this is payback for Starbuck. In the March 4th episode...Starbuck gets cruelly tortured by Leoben and dies in the end. I'm willing to bet if the Leoben character appears in the credits...this may be a hint to what happens to Starbuck.

As for the 5 remaining models:

I believe we could be in for some shocks.

1. Cally
2. Rosylin
3. Cain
4. Chief
5. Gaeta

Cain or Rosylin could be the leader of the Final 5 Cylon models - possibly THE Leader of the Cylons.

I've got to say that there's been a lot of rumors regarding Starbuck, in particular the idea that she will either die or be removed from the major cast somehow. For some reason I can't really believe it and find it likely that all the interest around Starbuck is misplaced. Particularly when most of the interest seems orchestrated, with the interviews and whatnot.

Furthermore, I think Starbuck has enough angst going on in her life. Push it further and you’re not only breaking her as a character, you're breaking the believability of her character.

As far as my guesses for the series, I suspect while we will see one or two familiar faces amongst the final five, I expect for most of them to be new characters. Of the familiar faces though, I think the Chief is the most likely suspect. The way in which he found the temple of five, which is intimately connected to the identity of the final five, is highly suspect. Besides which it would make Nicholas a little more connected to the story. Hera's the first of "God's new children"; it doesn't make sense for her to be the last as well.

Other than that I'm in the dark. Felix is another safe bet, though it would be ironic if Leboen wasn't lying when he said Adam was a cylon. It would also be fun to see a few characters that have already died return as cylons. I'm not sure if I'd want Cain being one, but Billy or Ellen, or even Kat would be interesting.

What I am convinced of is that Baltar is not a cylon. From the outset of the miniseries, the question was 'Does Humanity Deserve To Survive?' As far as I can tell the show is attempting to examine (but not answer) the question by showcasing humanities high points and low points in the most extreme of circumstances. So, then we come to Baltar. It seems to me that more than any other character Baltar has been a model of humanities faults and arrogance, and sometimes even our brilliance. More importantly, he shows our drive to survive, something essential to all of humanity and the question of the show. It's not a pretty picture of humanity that the character of Baltar paints us, but it seems to me an accurate one.

I feel having him turn out to be a cylon betrays this sub-theme, but also destroys the notion of Baltar as the 'traitor,' and I know that the writers of Battlestar are better than that.
Jim Starluck 01-17-2007 01:18 AM
I agree that Starbuck has been pushed to her limit. She's gone through so much angst this season, it's time for the pendulum to swing back the other way.

As far as the Final Five are concerned...the one thing I'm not sure of is whether the Five are a series of identical copies, like the rest, or whether they're individuals.

I also agree that Baltar is out, as is Adama. Moore has stated that none of the Cylons are modeled after a human being who already existed, and since we know that Adama and Tigh were alive since the Cylon Wars, and that Lee is Adama's son, all three of them are out of the running. I think Rosalyn is as well; she wouldn't have needed the transfusion from Hera to cure her cancer otherwise.

Obviously Helo can't be a Cylon. I'm pretty sure Gaeta isn't either--he's had so many opportunities to frak over the Fleet since the start of the show, I find it impossible to believe that he passed them all up to maintain his cover. Maybe Galen or Cally Tyrol, but not both--only one or the other, because otherwise they couldn't have had their son. Starbuck is probably out as well, because of their attempt to put her in the Farm back on Caprica.

Cain, Billy, Ellen, Kat...heck, any character who has died and could have been a Cylon would make for a hell of a comeback. People like Zak Adama are out for the same reasons his father and brother are.

Also, in the next episode, I expect either Anders or Dee to die. And the situation with Hera should provide some interesting insight into Athena's loyalties. I don't think she's going to go back to the Cylons, but I'm also not sure how buddy-buddy she's going to be with Adama or Rosalyn when all is said and done.

Finally...bets on whether Adama nukes the planet (but conveniently misses the temple), or pulls a fast one and nukes the Basestars instead?
