They had already added that extra feature in SH2: Restless Dreams where you play as Maria, but it seems like

spoiler (highlight to read):
that negates the whole idea that Maria is a creation of James' repressed sexual desires for Mary before she became ill.

Also, I'm having difficulty determining

spoiler (highlight to read):
the different Silent Hills. I'm assuming there's a normal, regular town that James visited with Mary before her illness and death. But then by some means (gods or whatnot), it was made to reflect the different characters who were drawn there (James, Eddie, Laura, Angela). If what you said is correct SS, then all of them are experiencing different versions of the town while physically in the same place. Does the original, peaceful town still exist? There was something I read to the effect that all the monsters you see in the town are real people in the regular Silent Hill, but I'll have to link to that later. Can you tell me if I'm right or not?

Have you seen the movie? Neither have I. But when the creator of the series is fully backing the movie its based on, it has to be badass. So whatever.

Silent Hill is pretty much a really screwed up town. In the original Silent Hill, there are three (I think) versions of it. In the second one, the town is still there, but James is all screwed up and seeing it as something else. The dark history of the town is also told in the second one in even more detail than the first one. The 3rd and 4th ones are set outside of Silent Hill and in the town itself, and it is cult activity and the like (as well as Walter Sullivan's pure evil in the 4th one) that's making the town all fubar.

So yeah, the town is pretty evil...is the main bullet point of what I was saying.

Not yet but I do plan on it, although judging from the previews it looks to be decent at best, however it does look better than any of the RE movies, well not like that's hard or anything. But I guess if the creators are behind it, then I guess it might turn out ok but I will give Konami some props, atleast they cared about making a what looks like a half way decent movie, howver the same can't be said about capcom.

Theres:

spoiler (highlight to read):
"Normal" silent hill. Which is the resort town.

Then

spoiler (highlight to read):
The foggy/snowy town which is sort of "level one" of it going horribly wrong, the towns still there but you've got monsters popping up

And then finally

spoiler (highlight to read):
"otherworld"/"dark" silent hill/"paradise" as it seems to be referred to by the cult in SH3. All the rusted corridor goodness and pitch black skies and really, really warped abominations we've come to expect

So it's really unknown at what point "reality" exists, it's possible everything aside from the normal town is some sort of halucination. Except that wouldn't explain
spoiler (highlight to read):
Cybil recieving the reports of strange activity in the area in the first one
. Then in the comics it apparently contradicts itself, with one of them having silent hill as an abandoned ghost town full of monsters (but still with power and phone lines), and one of them having it as a "normal" town.

I'm more confused than ever. I'll have to replay the game over the next few days.

Could it be that the earthly Silent Hill is also parallel to a Silent Hill in Hell also?

That's actually kind of a given, starting with the first game where, if you enter a room and exit it, you're in a parralel hell world.
