*Face twitches. Repeatedly.*
Wow. I've heard of desperate ploys to save profit, but that just takes the cake. It's pretty much another attempt to circumvent cable and internet news, which have been taking people away from newspapers for awhile. While attempts at increasing circulation are not necessarily bad, I doubt this is the way to go. I mean, why not upgrade, I dunno, THE NEWS IN AND OF ITSELF!?
This all said... Can I be told the difference between manga and your classic comics besides them being read different ways? Last I checked manga was in fact inspired in the first place by the ancient U.S. comics...

I may just have to pick up a Sunday P-I to see what all the fuss is about. Certainly anything that bucks the trend of rerun Peanuts, rerun Calvin & Hobbes* is worth taking a look at.
Pygmalion
*I do like Calvin & Hobbes, but it's a shame that there's apparently been no new writer who can do a good Sunday comic.

Hm, well while my paper of choice isn't on the list, I'm not so sure about this.
I love reading the comics that have been in the papers for years now, and to have some replaced by manga........ eh, just doesn't seem right.

Alright I really do the some of the old comics but if there are no longer new issues being created of the on going series after a while re-runs get well stale and sadly I guess this is the way of on going progress. Who know maybe this will beinteresting.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I actually don't see anything in that article about manga replacing the existing comics (unless you interpret the first sentence literally, but I highly doubt it was meant that way). Also, this is not Japanese manga that they're talking about, it's American manga (which are American comics that mimic the typical Japanese art style), so it's not all that different from some of the comics that are already in there.

It's true that the art style of early Japanese manga was inspired by American cartoons, but there are still many cultural differences (and other differences that have developed over time) that separate them from American comics, such as Japanese stylization, storytelling, cultural references, etc. As for the difference between American manga and other American comics, there's not much that I'm aware of other than the art style.

It would be awesome to pick up the paper in the morning and see Azumanga Daioh right next to Non-Sequitur.

The reason? Newspaper editors want to attract more young readers.

.....oh PLEASE...IMHO one stip is hardly going to satisfy someone's manga craving. (or mine at any rate)
One stip of
Peanuts or
Garfield will certainly make my day brighter...but unless they show me Trigun, Big O (which amazingly would be appropriate for the NY Times!), or Lupin (that ain't happenin) I ain't interested =P
...though I suppose broading my view is an option...but I don't have the time in the morning to read the papers anyways >_>

Yes, but the NY Times doesn't have comics because it takes itself too seriously (No other paper in the United States is considered in the same leauge as the New York Times except possibly the Washington Post). Maybe in The New York post or something.

Less opinionated talking cigarettes, more clergy with knives killing zombies. (though how they'd ever fit hellsing into a sunday comics format I dont know.)

Throw the subtitle "Protestants vs. Catholics" somewhere, and everyone will grab at it. Screw the stocks.
Everyone will grab at it.
