. Thought this'd be a fun idea
. Title explains well enough, so it's all a matter of laying down a few rules.
You don't have to interpret the one you post, nor do you have to interpret the one that is immediately above you; you could do one that was two or so pages back or what not if it caught your attention. You do, however, have to post the entire song. You can also discuss a bit if you think someone's interpretation seriously rubs you or yours. There is NOTHING wrong with disagreement - it opens new ideas and deflates overblown egos. I only care of one argument get 1-2 pages in length. At that point, you might want to consider taking that to private
. Your interpretation could be drawn out and analytical, or simply a few sentences - doesn't matter, just have fun
. Oh, and don't bust in with "the singer said..." stuff; I'm not asking what the singer said - I'm asking what does it mean to you. Music speaks differently to different people; there's no absolute standard of suitability regarding that.
So, without further ado
:
Metallica - Hero of the day
Mama they try and break me
The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms no matter where they’ve gone
They’re off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone’s wicked way
Still the window burns
Time so slowly turns
And someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flames
Do you feel your name?
Did you hear your babies crying?
Mama they try and break me
Still they try and break me
’scuse me while I tend to how to feel
These things return to me that still seem real
Now deservingly this easy chair
But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair
Don’t want your aid
But the fist I make
For you,can’t hold off fear
No not on me
So please excuse me
While I tend to how I feel
But now the dreams and waking screams
That everlast the night
So build a wall
Behind it crawl
And hide until it’s light
So can’t you hear your babies crying now?
Still the window burns
Time so slowly turns
And someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flames
Can’t you hear your name?
Did you hear your babies crying?
But now the dreams and waking screams
That everlast the night
So build a wall
Behind it crawl
And hide until it’s light
So can’t you hear your babies crying now?
Mama they try and break me
Mama they try and break me
Mama they try and break me
Mama they try
Mama they try
Mama they try and break me
Mama they try and break me
Mama they try and break me

To me, this song could be seen in the light of war; I'm a bit tired at the moment to get into thorough semantics, but the "burning window" could represent freedom away from the battlefield. The "hero of the day", well, could be the enemy to be defeated (hero used as an ironic slant), or it could be something altogether more metaphysical - *shrugs* guess I'll explain more about that tomorrow if I'm here.
What really kind of lead me down this path of thinking about war were the lines that star with "'scuse me while I tend..." Sounds much like a grizzled vet after the war who's now dealing with posttraumatic stress - flashbacks (" These things return to me that still seem real") and memories of the war ("But now the dreams and waking screams/That everlast the night"). The speaker also seems to refuse government aid after the fact since, as he said, they "can't hold off fear".
That's my groggy take on this.
