Eva on Cartoon Network (Update! - First Episode Airs Tonight!)

ADV cut several scenes from the last few episodes of Eva, this is well known, has been since the VHS releases. They include a cut bit around the destruction of Unit - 00 as well as brief shots of Adam in Gendo's hand. These *were* in the original Japanese TV broadcast of the episodes, ADV cut them for God-knows what reason. There are no similar "Director's Cut" releases in Japan, only the original release and the remastered release issued here as the Platinum Edition.

Till you can give us proof, im not believing any of it.
Anyway, if those scenes were originally in the episodes, how come the DCs are closer to half hour long than the non-DCs?

Eva was edited for TV in Japan. Not so much for content, but mainly due to time restraints. Several minutes had to be cut from every episode and the previews had to be shortened to 15 seconds (from 30 seconds). When Eva was released on VHS and LD in Japan, the full, unedited episodes were put out. So, in Japan, there was a TV version and a video version of Eva.
ADV Films acquired and began to dub Evangelion in 1996, only a year after it had shown on TV in Japan. They released it on VHS from 1996 to 1997. However, ADV rushed to put the series out here because it was still fresh content and had a large fanbase. They rushed TOO much. Instead of waiting for the home video releases to finish up in Japan (which was up to episode 20), they quickly grabbed whatever they could get their hands on, which was, of course, the edited TV version of those last 6 episodes, and put them on VHS (and later DVD) here. So now, they're finally re-releasing those last 6 episodes in their original, unedited format. |

| The Directors' Cut is not just a remaster but a revised and re-edited special edition produced under the careful supervision of creators Hideaki Anno and Gainax to include amazing new footage never before available outside of Japan. The first volume contains Evangelion episodes 21-23 in both the extended Directors’ Cut versions and the original broadcast versions allowing fans to see the creative progression of this seminal title’s final moments. |
I hope that helps for those wondering about the Director's Cut version of the last six episodes. It's surprising to see that Eva will be on Adult Swim, as I didn't think it would happen any time soon. I might watch it, even though I have Anime Network On Demand that contains Eva (AN On Demand updates the episodes about every two weeks, though). It also depends on if I get all 7 Platinum DVDs by then.

So maybe thats why I like Eva, although I'm reluctanct to call it the "greatest ever", "masterpiece", etc. |
I also watched the whole series within a short period of time and I only found it confusing and not as good as I was expecting. I would call it highly overrated and I really don't see why it is considered such an important anime.
Maybe I just need to watch it more?

Nah It obviously wasn't that great because I haven't watched it much since.
Plus it was kind of predictable at some points and then others just completely nonsensical.
I really don't think there is much point to EVA so I wouldn't get annoyed if If felt I wasn't "getting something" that everyone else got.
...or maybe its because people want protagnisits who are either really cool heroes or someone they can relate too, not a pathetic loser like shinji.

This spring, I had to go watch this show (through rentals) to see what all of the hubbub was about. It's an interesting show. It gets a solid "B" in my rating.
I think it's most unique thing is that it takes a stereotypical anime plot - boy and giant robot with plenty of fanservice - and throws the whole thing on its head by about mid-way through.
The hardest part was I really didn't care for any of the characters. Actually, my favorites were the three officers on the command center. They were the only ones I really cared about. And Gendo's right-hand man/former professor seemed like a nice guy too.
There are other neat things - like some wonderfully mystical music, some amazing giant mecha action sequences, and some neat edits - both fast and furious cuts as well as long, drawn out shots. And the climax in episode 25 is absolutely breathtaking - with Beethoven's 9th Symphony as the score - bonus!
The weird stuff - especially in the "End of Evangelion" movie is truly out there and a hodgepodge of mysticism and nonsensical skews of Judeo-Christian religious themes. But that's to be expected, since it comes from Japan where the unfamiliar Judeo-Christian traditions are taken more like fantasy plot tools more than anything else.

On a different note, I think we can assume that any show produced by Studio Gainax (Eva, FLCL, for examples) will be overrated. That's not to say they aren't good shows (they are). But Gainax is pretty vocal about thumping their chests and saying they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. Chalk it up to marketing and merchandising.
I only saw the first 5 or 6 episodes of Eva. I couldn't really get into it, I kept wanting to smack Shinji. I'm sad, so I'm going to let the world die.
I actually really liked FLCL. I think it was the random insanity and the style. But those are the only 2 Gainax things I've seen.

I love FLCL. I don't think it's overrated. Most people hate it. It makes perfect sense to me. I suppose Eva makes perfect sense to someone though. I just think FLCL is a much better show.

I also love FLCL. ^__^
As for Eva, if it's shown on AS I'll probably watch, but I'm not particularly looking forward to it. Mainly because I don't really know anything about it.

I was just watching some eva today and I'm not sure if there is more than one dub, but the dub I saw wasn't all that great compared to the original.
It adds a layer of cheesyness that eva really doesn't need.

I saw the first ep and part of two, and I have to say that I want to strangle the english voice actor who did Shinji. Just like Ed Elric and Paper, some of these people need acting lessons as far as personna development. They make William Shatner look brilliant in comparison. I kind of dread watching this on A.S. I do want to see what the fuss is about, because most of my friends say it draws you in as it goes along, but then gives you a suplex with the ending.
huh?
He sounds like a whiny brat, which he is.

Usually I watch all my animes dubbed becuase It doesnt really matter to me but I seriously think the English voice acting on EVA sucks tremendously when compared to the original japanese, and its my only exception.
I definately think it will bring down the quality of the show when they air it on AS.

I agree, the Japanese cast is just outstanding. Plus, it has Kotono Mitsuishi.

It does, it's called getting loaded on anti-depressants and making an anime about it.
...What, it was a good show, but thats BASICALLY how it came to be.

I can't really say which one I liked better. I liked some VAs from both. I couldn't stand Asuka's Japanese VA though. I liked her English VA better. Less annoying.

I just wanted to give a heads up to you guys about this.
I was watching FullMetal Alchemist on adult swim last night when a commercial plugging Neon Genesis Evangelion showed. From what the commerical says (you can't really be trusting CN's plugs these days), the series will be premering this Saturday, 12:30 eastern time.
Peace.

Now that I'm at college w/ all the other engineering nerds I'm no longer dependant upon AS for anime.
