Recommend some rock music

Patsai 07-02-2005 01:19 AM
Could anyone here recommend some good rock music? I recently bought an iPod and my collection only has 72 songs in it. If anyone could perhaps help me out and post a band or song that you highly recommend that I shouldn't go without, please post. I'll take anything except for the following:

  1. I accept obscene and profrane songs to a "Korn"- and "Powerman 5000"-level, but nothing harsh.
  2. I also accept light rock music (I'm a big fan of Maroon 5).
  3. I like good vocals, but I also want good beats. I don't want songs with just random guitar slamming (aka no talent involved).
  4. No satanic or death metal please. I will accept anything else.

Well, the classics are good... Queen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, that stuff... I also like Franz Ferdinand...

Perhaps it would help to get an approximation of what your 72 song collection is made up of?

Here are a few of my favorite bands at the moment.
The White Stripes
Pixies
The New Pornographers
Blur
Devo
The B-52's

I might post some more if I think of some.
Volt 07-02-2005 01:50 AM
It's hard to recommend rock bands, since rock has about 6,000 sub-genres, but here's some music I think is pretty awesome (band name, then CD).

At the Drive-In - "in/Casino/OUT" *
At the Drive-In - "Relationship of Command"
At the Drive-In - "Vaya"
Sparta - "Porcelain"
The Mars Volta - "Deloused in the Comatorium"
Motion City Soundtrack - "I Am The Movie"
Motion City Soundtrack - "Commit This To Memory"
Saosin - "Translating the Name" (This one might be hard to get a hold of. PM me and I'll help you out.)
The Matches - "E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals"
System of a Down - "Steal This Album!"
Alkaline Trio - "Crimson" *

* If you suddenly only have enough cash to get 2 CDs, get these. Easily some of the best music ever made.

I'm forgetting a lot, but those are some definite must-buys right there.

Kid A and Amnesiac are my favorite ones (Besides OK Computer) Frown

Modest Mouse is really great. Their guitar style is genius, as well as their song structure. They know how to make music.
Xel 07-03-2005 12:41 AM
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, definitely. Also Coheed & Cambria.
Bllue 07-18-2005 06:17 PM
Every body's already suggested every thing good. Unless your into emo. Hawthorn Height and Silverstein are great for that... *Shivers*
They have creepy lyrics and voices though...
Darkside 07-18-2005 06:32 PM
You can never go wrong with AC/DC, make sure you get songs from both the Bon Scot and Brian Johnson eras.
Kairi 07-24-2005 07:48 PM
Go look up Symphony for the Devil, by Pig.
DJX Prime 07-25-2005 07:39 AM
Here's a couple more suggestions from my personal collection:

Oingo Boingo (especially if Danny Elfman is with them)
Sisters of Mercy
Queensryche

I've been developing an interest in The Bravery, especially after hearing "Honest Mistake." Finally, someone introduced me to an underground (?) power metal band called Iced Earth. They do a 30 minute opus about the Battle of Gettysburg. Deffinitely worth a listen to; it comes with their album The Glorious Burden.

Better Than Ezra
Steve Miller Band
Candlebox (well, "Far Behind" at least)
Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains (DEFINITELY)
Filter

Damn...Scotty pretty much covered everything...and Im too lazy to think about it...

That's of course if you want to listen to mediocre industrial nonsense. Raymond Watts isn't the least bit talented as, say, pretty much everyone else in industrial metal. (Still listening to that stuff, eh, Nein?)

(To avoid further confusion, that's my heavily-biased opinion Tongue ).

In my opinion, Stevie, Bun Bun, Volt and myself pretty much hit the nail on the head. If you need specific albums/songs, feel free to PM me.

Trent Reznor is a pussy and you know it. Give that crybaby stuff up.

..and don't get all upset just because I made fun of your banner.

You're a funny guy. Trent Reznor's an amazing lyricist and musician (especially piano/keyboards). You should really see him live. His music and lyrics are far better than anything Watts could do. You should see him live instead of just listen to the albums. That's the real experience right there.

I'm not upset about the banner thing. In fact, I don't care at all. I mean, nobody died and made you king of all that is Photoshop, but still. Your a punk. You have no importance to me. KTHXBAI

Whatever you gotta tell yourself. [Shrugs]
evanASF27 07-25-2005 06:30 PM
In addition to a majority of Tony's list I add Brewer and Shipley ("One Toke over the line") and Mason Wiliaions (Classical Gas) Big Grin hehehe
Though some may argue it isn't rock, I think that if you can headbang to it, it's semi-rockable. Cool
DJX Prime 07-25-2005 11:32 PM
Anthrax (they did a killer cover of "Pipeline" on Attack of the Killer Bs)
Dire Straits
Foreigner
Iron Butterfly for "Innagaddadavida (sp?)"
Ozzy Osbourne
Psychedelic Furs
Roy Orbison
Steve Miller Band
Santanna
The Ramones
Anything with Steve Vai or Slash

That's about it for me. I think that between Bleedthrough and Tony, they have a pretty comprehensive list when it comes to rock. However, I think some of the things Tony mentioned might be more in the pop category (hard to tell for me).
