What I've figured out that almost everyone is a Norman fan. And- why not? C'mon, he's a butler who carries a machine-gun, yet is a caring, loyal butler.

O_o Never thought of that, 'though your right. Yes, indeed, he would be, for various reasons.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I've never really liked her, either. Sure, she gets a horrible rep, but some of it she does deserve. Not all of it, but still some.

EDIT: Oops...sorry. V_V
Collateral 07-01-2005 02:49 AM
I think it would be neat to get a Angel fan on here because then we could really get some info and get into an actual discussion.

I want to know why someone would like Angel because in my opinion I really do dislike her. I did feel pretty bad at the end when she was having a really difficult time though.

I also don't understand why she was the head honcho at the end of the series? Why not make Dorothy or Roger even?

Probably because I've scared them off with my obsessive-ness. And my paintball gun. Evil

Ahem ahem. I'll keep an eye on it, I suppose. X3

I don't have much in the way of existing shots, but I do have a decent amount of fanart-- both my own and from Japanese sites and stuff. Granted, the ratio of Alan to everyone else is... well, really huge, but...

I will say one thing, though: for being such a simple guy, Beck sure is hard to write for. For me, anyway. I guess that's the catch of getting too attached to one character-- makes you lose perspective on all the others.

As for Angel... well, I'm a little apathetic to her, personally, but I recognize her importance, if nothing else. I don't know how better to describe it, but when I watch her, all that I come up with is how inexorably necessary she is. That's the word I'd use for her. Necessary.
Collateral 07-01-2005 02:56 AM
But why is she so necessary?

You see I never understood that.
Mrs. Beck 07-01-2005 03:00 AM
Yeah, we need a more varried group of fans. There's not as much discussion with less variety.

I couldn't find any good Norman pics, but I decided to draw one and scan it in for you, Collataral. ^^ Besides, Norman needs some fandom, too!

Personally, I really enjoy writing from Beck's point of view (which I'll be doing in Chapter 2 of my fanfic), because he's got such a weird mix of a personality. But then again, I can't write too well for Roger - while most people I know can. I think it depends on how much you pay attention to that certain character, really.

On the subject of Angel: I never really was a fan, and doubt I will be. Ok, so she was nesessary. But also, she was the sort of character I hate - the deceiving, beautiful woman. Until the later episodes, at least. And then I just was kind of annoyed with it: Why the heck is Angel the one who's the 'memory'? You can tell they had to finish up the series quick, because of a budget cut I think.
Collateral 07-01-2005 03:04 AM
I can really think of any characters that were hard for me to write about but then again I haven't started some of them and my fanfic has so many new characters.

I know there is an Angel fan out there. I might just have to make myself one.

Why do you like Beck so much? I am just curious.

And

Xel, you like Alan. Why is that?

*sighs* I knew that question was coming, sooner or later.

Well, I guess it's because I love his personality and his expressions - they did an awsome job with his expressions! I mean, looking back - He's a bit of an extreme personality, and they did a good job of capturing that.

I don't think that a lot of people try to break down his personality, labeling it 'simple' and ignoring it. But I decided to break it down, and this is what I got from it:
Beck is a stubborn, determined man (well, that one's obvious). Once he sets his mind to something, he will acheive it. I don't know why, but I really like that.
Yes, Beck is arrogaunt and greedy, and I won't denie that. But you know there's some honest to god good in 'im, because it's obvious in episode either 24 or 25 (I forget which) that he regrets stealing Dorothy's core memory for Alex, and he starts questioning his desiscions, and regretting them.
And then there's the blunt fact that I just think it's hilarious how he can be so unproffesional yet gain such a reputation in Paradigm. And, yes, I'll admit he's pretty damn unproffesional at times.
Finally, there's that fact that I've stated many-a-time: He's encredibly sexy.

So, I've said my bit, and stated most of why I'm such a Beck fangirl.
Collateral 07-01-2005 03:17 AM
I've always thought that he was a criminal mastermind and not the two-bit robber that most people label him as. I don't really know why I believe this. Maybe it is because he does extreme robberies and stuff and he isn't dumb but very intelligent!

Exactly! (Even if he can be a little lacking in the common sense department at times) He's a technological genius, if you really think about it.

*looks over at the poll* Man, Norman's still ahead, but Swarchtzwald is only one behind. ...I sometimes wonder why he's got so many fans. I mean, yeah, he's cool, but... I dunno.
Collateral 07-01-2005 03:23 AM
Now let's discuss why we like Norman...

He is super sweet.
Can handle a machine gun taller and most likely heavier than him.
Has a neat motorcycle.
Is fearless.
Can fix Big-O.
The only thing that can keep Roger sane.
He has an eye patch.

Am I missing anything?

By the way, we will probably have more Angel fans soon. Krang said that there are a lot out there. I guess they just haven't entered yet.

Why do you think she was the Director of the World?
Mrs. Beck 07-01-2005 03:27 AM
Hmm, well I would name the reasons I like Norman but you've got 'em covered.

Well, that's acctually a releif - I almost wonder if people are avoiding this board because it's mostly just been you and I talking. As in, no one else really posted too much, 'cept Xel.

I'm not sure why she was, and I'm still trying to figure it out. It was like, because she herself was a memory or somethin' like that. I don't quite get it, really, why she was a memory and how that whole thing worked.

Oooooh! Wonderful question! One that actually requires a little thought from me too, honestly.

I first started to like Alan because I thought he was beautiful. No, really. There's a certain aesthetic appeal he's got that's just slightly off-kilter-- his makeup, his exaggeratedly thin body, his lack of eyes (which I found horribly and captivatingly mysterious at the time). And on top of this was one pimpin' suit and a really striking color scheme of black, white, and red. I'd never seen anyone that looked like he does.

...Man, this is really hard for me. Because it's been so long that I've reached the point where the only thing I can readily say is that I like Alan because he's Alan. So this actually takes a lot of effort, dissecting the reasons why. Embarrassed Sweatdrop

I guess the second thing was what a, well... sensual air he had about him. The charming and somewhat formal personality, the way he prefers to savor his kills if he can help it, the gun-licking? Yeah, not gonna lie. The gun-licking really got my attention. I thought there was a little undercurrent of something undeniably a bit hedonistic in him, which was odd given that one doesn't normally associate such a thing with a man who is half-mechanical parts.

And you know, that led to a lot of questions for me. Who is this guy? Where'd he come from? What was his youth like? Who is this man that he so willingly and eagerly gave up half of his humanity, and for what reason? Can he see with his eyes covered like that? Does he have eyes at all? How deep do the machine attributes go? Is everything intact and functional, er... down where it counts? Why is he the way he is? And so on. It could go on forever, really. And with all the unanswered questions, it made him so mysterious to me. And the creeping feeling I always got that the answers to those questions might bring us to a darker place than we expected... well, that only added to the allure.

I started trying to unravel him, kinda. Studying his personality, trying to kind of get into his head. I drew him once, supposedly before he got all cyborged. I'm still not sure if I completely agree with that interpretation now, but it's all I've got to go on.

So... yeah. That kind of touches on it. Embarrassed Sweatdrop
Mrs. Beck 07-01-2005 04:33 AM
Wow, Xel. That was much more thorough that I was with why I liked Beck so much - though I must agree on the statement that it's harder to tell why you like someone when you get to the point where you like them because of who they are.

I will admit that Alan is, indeed, one of my favorite characters, mostly because of how original he is! How mysterious, and how creepy he can be.
Collateral 07-01-2005 10:10 AM
For the one Eugene fan, why exactly do you like Eugene? He kind of scared me in his episode.

At your service, ma'am! I told myself I wasn't going to post here anymore, but i happened to be lurking, so.. here it is, an Angel fan's poor attempt at explaining her favorite gal of the series (complete with cutting and pasting replies I've made in previous posts):

I did not like Angel until I watched the series through a second time.

There's no easy way to explain my adoration for her. You see, I understand that Roger and Dorothy are, according to the majority of fans, set in stone and Meant To Be, but in the back of my mind, there's a parallel universe where Angel gets the guy. And I didn't always want it that way.

I get really irritated when people insist on portraying Angel as this catty, manipulative tramp, as I see so often in fics and even people's explanations for why they don't like her. Maybe she gave that impression in season one, but to me, it becomes painfully obvious by the end of the series that she is NOT that same person. It was a persona she used as part of her mission-- you know, the one she ended up abandoning to help a certain Negotiator. And even when he rejected her, she didn’t go crawling back to the Union in fury-- she just went on her way. It breaks my heart that she ends up alone, but she doesn’t try to do anything about it. She accepts it.

There are two sides to Angel. She's a very strong, independent, fierce woman, but she's also very lonely and tragic. She's beautiful and clever and cunning, and I admire that. She doesn't need to be rescued until it's absolutely necessary at the end of the series (and even then, could you really call that being rescued? Roger storms in, stops Vera, and then he's on his way again, without taking Angel home like he said he'd come to do).

Sure, her flirtations with Roger were probably just for fun at first, but I think that by episode 26 she really had come to care for him. And who here has never experienced unrequited love? I guess I feel that I can relate to her better than Dorothy.

Look at things from Angel's point of view for a moment:

Dorothy is an android. To Angel, an android can't be competition for a man's heart, because an android can't feel, right? I get annoyed when other fans accuse Angel of trying to "steal" Roger from Dorothy. Angel never tried to take Roger from Dorothy, because Roger hadn't made up his mind yet. Once she realized he wanted Dorothy and not her, she gave up. You can't take someone away when they don't belong to anyone yet. In her mind, it was preposterous that Roger could be in love with an android; she never saw Dorothy as competition. When she realized that it was true, she didn't try to fight back and change Roger's mind. She just went on alone in the rain.

So why did Roger make a (very clumsy) move on Angel in "Stripes"? Because he wasn't sure until that very moment. Even Roger found the idea of him and Dorothy having a relationship to be preposterous! It wasn't until he found himself confronted with the possibility of choosing Angel instead that he realized he had wanted Dorothy all along.

Angel accused him of being in love with an "insufferable android" because he suddenly chickened out when he started to kiss her. The only logical explanation for it was that he was in love with someone else-- and who else besides Angel could it have been? The answer would have to be Dorothy, and yes, Angel was in denial about it until "Stripes", but so was Roger!

I mean, how heartbreaking is that, to be rejected in favor or a machine? A machine with thoughts and feelings, but still, a machine. I think Angel probably has trouble comprehending just how human Dorothy really is. I know I do.

So, does any of that really explain why Angel is my favorite character? Probably not. It's not something I can explain coherently. She just is. Sure, I'm probably the only person who feels this sympathetic towards her and really likes her this much, but that's okay. I can always slip into the back of my mind, where that parrallel universe exists and Angel gets her happy ending.*

This is not to say that I don't support Roger/Dorothy. One look at my artwork will show you that I do support that pairing too, and I've even written some fics about it that I've never finished. I just prefer Roger/Angel, even though it will never happen.
Collateral 07-01-2005 10:17 AM
Thank you! That is exactly what this thread was lacking. I completely understand your point of view. You did an excellent job of speaking out your mind of why Angel was important and who she really is. I see that now. She isn't that tramp I always pictured her as but something more. Thank you again!
Mrs. Beck 07-01-2005 12:32 PM
Wow, now that was what this thread was truly lacking!
Kudos to you, and thank you! Honestly, looking at her now, Angel isn't as bad as I thought. .... I feel sorry for her, really! T_T
Gummibear 07-01-2005 03:28 PM
I'm pretty sure you guys have seen Batman: The Animated Series. I was rewatching it and I can't get over how much Angel and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) are alike! One thing about Batman and Catwoman's relationship is that they are both so alike but are standing on different ends of the spectrum. I found that an interesting comparision to Angel and Roger. Roger is attracted to Angel but never feels that he can trust her.

Dorothy is Roger's complete opposite. Roger and Dorothy are fascinated by eachother because they confuse eachother. I believe this is most relationships. Love is never easy. There is always something in the way of complete happiness. With Dorothy and Roger it's physical...Dorothy isn't human. With Roger and Angel a moral roadblock exists and life had a way of uniting them but their agendas were never in agreement.

I've come to love both Angel and Dorothy ( after watching the series several times every character grows on you) but I just wanted to add it my two cents as far as characters go. I've been watching Batman: The Animated Series on DVD. I'm in a Big O mood. It's really exciting to see how much both shows are alike.
Mrs. Beck 07-02-2005 11:02 AM
That's an interesting reference, Gummibear!

I don't really watch Batman, animated or not, so I can't really give much input as far as comparing the two shows go. However, I can say this about Roger's little love problem:

After watching most of the series (not all, I skipped only two episodes I think, which would be Electric City and the Heavan's Day - aka Christmas - episode) about three times (yay for DVD box sets!), I noticed that Roger loves Dorothy just enough more over Angel to make a difference, mostly because of the matter of trust. Now, these are just my personal oppinions and observations, remember. And Angel has feelings for Roger, as we all know, but in the end learns to respect Dorothy and Roger's love for eachother.
Yes, it's not very creative, I know, and everyone's heard it, but I feel it's best I put in my say on the matter.

And, yes, I am a Dorothy/Roger supporter, but that's not the reason I've formed that oppinion.

Oh, which brings me to something I realized after whatching episode thirteen, RD, for the second time, and let me just say that I'm very sorry if this has been pointed out before.

I think that RD's 'name' isn't just because of her extreme resemblence to Dorothy. Maybe it's a possible little hint, or joke, that the creators put in.
If you put and x in the middle of RD, you get RxD. And for those of us who have seen the fanfiction.net Big O section, I'm sure you've come to know that as the way of saying that there's a Roger/Dorothy pairing in the fic.
Maybe that's the creator's subtle little hint, hidden in the bigger plot of RD (that never really got finished, which bums me out), that Roger and Dorothy would end up together.

Heh, that was probably pointed out before, but I had to say it.
Schwarzwald_X 07-04-2005 07:38 PM
Big Ear is my favorite character-
1. James Lyon's voice is GREAT.
2. Quotes like "Mind you, this is just hearsay..." and "i've had my ear to the ground for some time now." give me goosebumps every time.
3. He's an informant- is their any sleuthier (sp) job than that? He represents the cool, mysterious side of Paradigm.
Big Ear rocks!
