A Big O character discusion: Discuss or defend your favorite character!!

Mrs. Beck 06-29-2005 05:01 AM
The reasons I made this thread:
1. I know that there's at least three awsome characters who have a horrible rep, my favorite being one of them.
2. It's fun to just discuss your favorite characters, eh?

Well, I might as well start off by stating those three characters with bad reps: Angel, Beck, and Alan. Ok, so Alan sorta earned his rep, but Beck and Angel?

Beck, yes, has done many stupid and arrogant things. But come ON people! T_T Do you have to mock his hairdo that MUCH?! (Even if it is kinda weird) Obviously, I'm a Beck fangirl, so I'll stop before I begin.

And Angel isn't quite as bad as everyone says, and this is coming from someone who really doesn't care about Angel much.

Alan...well...uh....Alan fans can defend there turf. But I ain't sayin' nothin'.

Well, there, I've gone on my mini-rant. Discuss, defend, and talk about your favorite characters- and why they are such.

Oh, one last thing:
*takes out paintball gun and yellow paint-balls and starts shooting Roger fangirls with it* Pleased I've earned the nickname 'The Anti-Roger' for a reason. 'Nough said.

Hmm, I like Norman and Dastan.

Norman because he is cool with Dorothy. He doesn't treat her like an android. He treats her with respect and I just love it. Smile

Dastan because even though he gets dissed alot about being a officer in the military police, he still does his job with honor and pride. Smile

I like Norman for the same reason. But this is why I dislike Beck; he treats Dorothy as just another piece of property that he can vandalize and steal. Beck isn't all bad though; his haircut rules.

I love Dastun because when he yells 'what' it reminds me of Mr T.
Sir Nise 06-30-2005 12:39 AM
Norman's sorta like Mr. Drummand from Diff'rent Strokes, and roger is like gary Coleman(except being 10x more awesome). Except Mr. Drummand didn't have a giant cannon.

I like everyone! Except the lames.

I will defend my Alan to the death, baby. <3

...Actually, I wouldn't do that. Embarrassed Sweatdrop There's not a lot you can do to justify the guy. But I sure admire him, in any case.

The one thing that I feel is a misconception (in my view, anyway-- and priding myself as the acting authority on all things Alan Gabriel, I believe I'm allowed to say that Pleased ) is this idea that he has some sort of prejudice against androids. I suppose from his gratuitously drawn-out attempted murder of Dorothy and that "since when did you become a robot-lover?" line to Angel, it's easy to jump to that conclusion. But no... I don't really think it's quite that simple.

The impression I've always gotten from the guy is that he's got his own little set of values or philosophies, sparse as they probably are. What they are is anyone's guess, but they show through the best in his little speech to Roger about his arrogance over being able to manipulate machines. Not that they aren't still mysterious as hell, but at the very least, it leads one to believe that he's not about to be preoccupied with contempt for any singular type of being. He took great pleasure in damaging Dorothy, but I really do not believe that this is rooted in any particular vendetta. He savored it because she was a work of art. Destroying something beautiful. An act of defilement, if you will. I liken this phenomenon to peeing on Shakespeare (the works, not the man). There's a certain perverted and obscene pleasure in that kind of thing, I think.

I think at the very least, it makes sense to say that if Alan hates androids, then he probably hates humans too-- he has voluntarily become half of each, after all. He appears to consider himself the best of both worlds (but is in reality the worst, according to Schwarzwald).

And you can't deny that he is in his own right something of a work of art. Look at that insane agility. Machine parts are heavy, don'cha know. Excellent marksmanship, considerable strength (given that by all rights, you should be able to snap the man like a twig). Swift and silent. He's built to kill, long story short, and he'd be perfect at it if not for his own-- shall we say-- quirks. The foolishness of both man and machine, remember? He's so fatally flawed. I love that.

I plan to make a topic on this in the next little while, but it's worth mentioning now: how incredibly different Alan seems to me with only his voice actor as the sole discrepancy. Since I finally got to see the subbed version, it's turned a lot of my preconceived notions of his character upside-down. Crispin Freeman's Alan is so charming and lively, with a sort of cat-like unpredictability. His voice is rich and musical and rather sexy. *cough* It's outwardly obvious how motivated by desire he is. Compared to his Japanese-dialogue self, he's practically an open book. And you know that sure ain't saying much. Embarrassed Sweatdrop

Issei Futamata's Alan actually scares me a little. Not because he's batsh*t insane like dub-Alan, but because he's so... well, different. His voice itself is deeper, more nasal, less musical, and a little more detached. It makes his character seem suddenly much colder and a helluva lot more professional. A little less human, too. There's something almost ethereal about him, in a really twisted way.

I understand dub!Alan. I don't understand sub!Alan. It's MESSED UP, YO. Well, I'm sure they're fundamentally the same. But it's amazing what little differences in voice, language, and delivery can do to change a character.

I also picked Beck. But he's not quite as fun or difficult to write about, so I'll shut up now. ;o

O_o Must...not...shoot Xel....with paintball gun....!

Heh jk. But excellent post, Xel. That's an interesting look at our cyborg 'friend'.
Now it's my turn, though it's not as long as Xel's post:

Beck is often brushed aside, and put into the catagorie of 'meaningless' side character. Mostly because there's alotta people out there who think he's annoying (grrrr...). But look back to episode 26: Beck's the one who knew about Big O's big secret weapon thing, even if just through a memory (not even his own). Yes, they could have easily replaced him- but c'mon, do I need to really press at how great of a character really Beck is?

Ok, so the yellow is a little overbearing, but it's time we looked past the bright yellow suit and the 'interesting' hair-do, past the extreme arrogance and greed. Beck's the psychotic criminal just trying to make a name for himself, and while he's at it some extra money and revenge (well, that's more of an attempt)!
..... *looks over last few sentences*
I'm doing a crappy job of defending him, aren't I? O.O Oh well, point is Beck is a unique character who you can't really put into a category like you can Alan, or Angel, or even Dorothy. Dorothy being the mysterious yet loveable female, Angel being the tough-yet-lost woman, and Alan being the so-crazy-almost-to-give-you-nightmares character. Almost every good series has one of each of those.

Ok, I'm done with my little blab of defense (or attempt at it). So two more little notes:

quote:
I like Norman for the same reason. But this is why I dislike Beck; he treats Dorothy as just another piece of property that he can vandalize and steal. Beck isn't all bad though; his haircut rules.

Hmm, well yes even I hate that about Beck. But, hey, he has no desire to even try to find out if she's more than a bunch of bolts and metal, unlike so many others who meet Dorothy in the series. Not that I'm saying that's a good thing, it really does annoy me even. *grins* You should read my fanfic, Not Your Average Romance. It's basically a comical romance about a man and his android.... android being R. Raven (my character, I came up with her all on my own. Pleased ) and man being Beck! Sure puts a different spin to the android/human romance, eh? I've already posted the introduction and first Chapter on fanfiction.net, I might submit it here.

WoOt for extreme fan-ism! Pleased *cocks paintball gun* I'd do just the same for the sake of my oh-so-un-appreciated Becka (don't ask why I call him that). Alright, so not quite to the death....

Yes! I've been noticed! Woo hoo!

Well, I like Eugene because..

He wears bellbottoms, turns people into kitties, shoots down middle age couples, and has long hair. How could NOT like him?

Isn't there already something like this or am I wrong? Is this different?

I guess, but this is really more an "in defense of..." thread than anything else. Or at least, I've been taking it in that direction. I think you'd find more debate here than in the other one.
Collateral 06-30-2005 07:48 PM

XD Well, everyone has unique reasons for liking a character.
....
Yours are just taking that unique to an extreme. Not that that's a bad thing, of course!

*nods triumphantly* It's time the silent fans voiced there oppinions! Speak, you silent people who call yourselfs fans, yet are....um....very very very quiet when the topic comes of favorite character! Do not let those damned Roger fans bash your favorite characters to the ground!
.....
Did I type that? Oops. Embarrassed Sweatdrop
(heh, sorry Roger fans. I'll warn any Roger fans/fangirls (once again) that I do NOT like Roger. And it's not really you, it's the fact that you like that damned negotiator with creepy eyebrows. And you say Beck's hair is weird.....)
Collateral 06-30-2005 10:13 PM
Norman is my favorite! I don't see how anyone can't like him. In the middle of a fight scene he just pops out of no where like in Daemonseed. He rode out in the middle of all of the chaos and picked up the present for Dorothy right on time. I wish he was my butler!

XD Yes, yes. Norman is my second favorite character. What's not to like about a one-eyed butler who keeps machine-guns handy? =D *takes a peep at the poll* Heh, he's got the most votes thus far, too!

Ohohoho. Well, as for me... I like Roger. I really do. But I also by no means see him as, like, the epitome of coolness or anything like that. In fact, I like him because he's an absolutely insufferable, anal-retentive, neurotic dorkus. Big Grin With his heart in the right place.

He's attractive, he's a little bit of a lunatic when it comes to his personal life, and he looks good shirtless and tied to a chair. *cough* That's good stuff, even though he doesn't make me fall to my knees in fangirlish glee.

He doesn't quite measure up to Alan in my mind, who is just so deliciously interesting. X3 Though for the record, it is this fangirl's personal opinion that Beck is actually by far the hottest male in the cast. ^^

O_O *hugs Beck close* Mine!

Heh, just kidding, glad to see I'm not completely insane, or alone in thinking that he is fiiiiine! [insert wolf-whistle here] Mwahaha. I'll stop voicing my oppinion on Beck's sexy appearance.

*cocks paintball gun* Do I need to give you the yellow treatment? (eh-uhm, sorry, I just had sugar. I can't stay serious for long at the moment, sorry.) Really though, what gets me about Roger is his sheer oblivious nature to surrounding beings! He's full of himself, and.... *looks over Xel's post again) .... Dead not worthy of a wolf-whistle. Not by my standards, anyway. (Acctually, my friend's 'explained' to me how, apparently, I just have bad taste in men. I decided to ignore this. XP)

=O You BETRAYED me! I thought better of you as to sink as low as to...aw, screw that! So maybe Roger looks ok. But man, there's just somethin' about those eyebrows that ruins it. Bleh.

O_o I've made a desciscion. There are more girls who think Beck is hot then I thought - there's just not as many who are as extreme as I am, as to voice this with such confidence.

Ahaha. I like him enough to slash him with Alan, at least? Embarrassed Sweatdrop Actually, coming from me, that's quite a high honor. XD;; Beck is certainly delicious material to work with, anyway.

Umm...rephrase that for me...
