Hi, welcome to the first episode discussion thread for Samurai Champloo! If you missed the first episode on Saturday, there's a repeat on Thursday at 11:30 Central/12:30 Eastern if you're interested in checking it out. I think a lot of you will enjoy it- there's a ton of great action and comedy mixed with drama and it's just a lot of fun to watch. If you're unfamiliar with the series, there's 26 episodes total, much of which are stand-alone stories but with a few multi-part story arcs. Yes, it's by the director of Cowboy Bebop (Shinichiro Watanabe), and there are a few similarities (both series are mostly episodic, some more comedy, some more serious, some focused on particular characters), but it's definitely its own show, so I hope people will give it a chance. Enjoy!

This show is awesome as hell. It's a perfect blend of action and plot development. Not to mention it is funny as hell:

Jin: That wasn't a dream.
Mugen: So you were really in a tub with your thing hanging out?
Jin: No, that was a dream. |

*Mugen tosses a coin into the air and it goes out of sight*
Fuu: I think you threw it too high...
Jin: He doesn't know the meaning of restraint

Awesome anime!
It definitly has the feel of a Shinichiro Watanabe anime!
I wasn't 100% sure as to what was going on, with the flashes from the current action to repeated scenes, but I do want to see more!

Loved that seen with Fuu running with the fireworks....

WOW! I was surprised to find a Samurai Champloo forum pop up in PCF!
This show was the greatest! Hilarious dialogue, awesome action, great VA's, and cool hip-hop music that fits very well with the style of the show.
I definitely think this is going to be one of my favorite animes for a while!

The theme wasn't that good (Not a big fan of hip hop/rap) the other music was okay though. But the series was great Fuu running with the fireworks was hilarious, and so were the quotes Jonny Axehandle mentioned....the scene transitions were original (for anime anyway).
It also had what Wolf's Rain lost. Seeing as how everyone else who did Bebop went to BONES and did WR. Don't get me wrong, I still like WR, but you can see what Bebop split into The wise cracks and marshal arts went to Champloo and the seriousness, some humor, gender mix ups (Toboe) and the art went to WR.
You can also see the simularities inbetween Mugen and Spike, so it was good that they picked Blum to do his voice, Even if he used more of a Jammie voice for him.....
All and all it was good, Can't wait till next week!

Whoah this definately could be cool.
Cool action, hip hop, and not to mention this sort of semi-serious take on historical japan.
Still unsure about what to think though.

This has become one of my favorite animes ^_^
This is the perfect mix of action, humor, and everything else I love in an anime ^_^ The hip-hop feel of the show is very interesting and drew me in imidiately ^_^
Several lines from the show were some of the funniest things I've ever heard. I look forward to the rest of the show...
As a side-note...Jin is quite drool-worthy if I do say so myself...

I love it already. Now this, and Paranoia Agent give me a reason to stay up late on Saturdays (FMA, and Inuyasha don't do it for me, I fell too far behind with GITS)
At first, I was worried that Mugen was just gonna be a samurai version of Spike, but by the middle of the episode he was quite different. Nice to know 'Nabeshin' still has his magic (Tenchi Muyo GXP was a major letdown). I really like the art and music alot too.

Wow. I had to do a quadruple take to make sure this was real.....My eyes skipped it....However awesome! *now has further reason to ignore Central City in its entirety*
Since I lack cable television I cannot watch the dub, but the fansubs I have are awesome.
Best quote of the first ep.

Words cannot describe the Ownage of the first episode. What with the blood, the amputated limbs, the funk and R.Smith's animated GIF of that one scene. Hot Damn! This is gonna be better than Kenshin!

Great show, all I expected it to be and more.
The hip-hop music is not normally my thing, but they mix it in masterfully with the show - especially the cuts.
I can see the comparisons to Cowboy Bebop (which is a good thing), but this show is entirely separate on its own. (It's like saying Minority Report and the new War of the Worlds movies are the same since they both star Tom Cruise and are directed by Steven Spielberg.) I think the most common trait is the heroes living on the edge of the law and the well-mixed tone of serious drama/humor/and dynamic action sequences.
This will be a cool show.

He's a BeBoper too. Vicous. Seeing the previews I got the impression of BeBop meets Kenshin sans the bounty hunting. I was right. Mugen and Jin are perfect opposites to play off each other, and haveing the almost Ed like girl tagging along keeps them from killing each other.

I personally loved that part, it said "one day earlier" and showed a modern urban city (which goes with the hip-hop theme) and it was like WAIT A SEC!!! and you here the sounds of a DJ rewinding the turntables as it changed from a modern urban setting to the countrside of feudal Japan. I thought it fit perfectly with the show.
I also loved the end when it said "THE END......PSYCHE TO BE CONTINUED"

I saw an assload of fansubbed episodes (not all of them, but close) from Champloo, and it easily has to be one of my favorite shows.
The dub kicked ass.
I want more!
