It appears to be an April Fools joke.

I thought I did hear of a Metroid movie a while ago. I think it would be an interesting concept.
Generalissimo D 04-08-2005 08:40 PM
Not an april fools joke. I would bet a reasonable size of money on this. I found this a few months ago, as in LAST YEAR. I also mentioned it, to my agony, that paris hilton tried out for Samus(It was in the trivia section, which was taken out.) I believe hopes on this movie are running low for producers and such..

Well, what Lt. Sanji was referring to was this article (which has the same release date of 2006...). Smile It sounds like a good concept nonetheless. I'm not sure who exactly would play as Samus, though.

Actually, the Metroid movie has been in limbo for a while now. The previous holders of the rights to make the movie let it expire, and I've heard rumors that John Woo is involved. As others have said, I just hope it doesn't suck.

We don't need another Super Mario Bros. movie. *shudders*

holy crap.. there was such a movie.!??!?!? el grosso

I actually did hear about the possiblity of a Metroid Movie. I don't believe this is the proof but it would be cool if one was made.

However there are alot of jokes going around.

The simple quality of this image is proof of that.

I think if there were to be a Metroid movie, Nintendo would announce it, it would be all over the website, and be their biggest marketting...thing. So let's wait for it to be there. Or hope someone with a subscription to Nintendo Power sends in the question "Is there going to be a Metroid movie being made?" and gets an answer back.

EDIT: I found a number of articles concerning the idea and little bits of information given out about a possible Metroid movie.

Metroid Galaxy
Insomniac Mania
GamezIndustry

The last article seems to have the most information. To mix the ideas from each one, one can infer that a movie deal may have been made a few years back, set for release in late 05 or 06, but little progress has been made.
Captain Maw 04-10-2005 03:14 PM
yeah, thats most likely true, seeing how everything that nintendo has a part in is announced before rumors speculate.
Generalissimo D 04-10-2005 04:26 PM
Bah. That joke is irrelevant. I've known about this for a while now. John Woo was said to be the director...but no say in who is to play samus. I say Jessica Biel. I've been saying it since 2002. If there was a metroid movie..she has to do it.

As a total Metroid fanatic, being that every Metroid game I get my hands on becomes the sum of my existence for about a week, I really hope this movie will be good. But to be honest, I won't be holding my breath. Movies that are inspired by video games are almost always disasters, as the core of the video game experience is interaction, a factor that is totally lost when translated to the screen. Since many video games are often driven by gameplay and not plot, the moviemakers usually just make everthing up themselves. The resulting product is usually too different to please the fans and too mediocre to draw in nonfans. I can't really hope for success in the Metroid series, which has always been driven by its beautiful gameplay in spite of its near-absence of plot.

I just hope I'm wrong about this.

Actually, the Prime series has a very intricate plot. If they get those writer guys to help with the screenplay, it will be oscar winning. Well...lets just pray for the rest of the year and hope it doesnt come out too horrid.

True. However, the plot in the Prime series tended to unfold in written passages that could be scanned, that fit perfectly with the eerie, detached ambience of the Metroid series. It is, in my eyes, a brilliant device for unfolding the plot, but it would be near impossible to make a commercial movie in the same way (I certainly would pay to see them try though).

The Metroid series has always relied on its sense of isolation, of being alone in a strange, dark alien land, and Samus has always been a silent hero who fights nonspeaking enemies. All these would be difficult elements to preserve in a film. I just hope the filmmakers don't sacrifice what we love about Metroid to make it "hip" or "more accessable".
Mike 04-10-2005 08:57 PM
I dunno...the whole idea of Metroid is that you're alone, by yourself, and everything else wants to kill you. Two hours of explosions without dialogue wouldn't be too good....
SmothPocket 04-21-2005 03:54 PM
who do you think would make a good samus?
Fujiko 04-22-2005 03:04 PM
Shocked

I'm not THE biggest fan of the Metroid games (only cuz i don't play them often)....but I agree with everybody else.

*Chanting: Please don't suck, please don't suck*

Jessica Biel. Or Jessica Alba. Either one with, I'm cool. I lean toward biel because I prophecized that if there ever was a metroid movie, she'd be it. And with Blade Trinity....it made it seem all the more likely.
TanookiJoe 04-25-2005 08:05 PM
Meh. I hope they don't go for someone famous for Samus. I want someone who can act, dammit, not just some pretty face. They need to focus on character first.
Captain Maw 04-26-2005 12:44 AM
yeah, they definitely need to have someone athletic, maybe Uma Thurman? she did pretty well in Kill Bill, is a natural blond, not fugly.

You know, I could see that.

Wouldn't it be kinda hard to make a Metroid movie? There's really only one character (Samus) and the story is usually revealed during gameplay and not in fancy cinema sequences.

Do movies based on games ever do well?
