Ah, but without the Eight Inch Floppy there would be no fancy DVD-RW or Blu-Ray Disks to get excited about.

The eight in. floppy isnt useful at all these days. I found an 8 incher one day and it was the size of a book! Maybe back in the day...

You're thinking in terms of direct worth: while the RX02 8 inch floppy might not be useful today, it certainly helped contribute to the development to things that are (such as the aforementioned DVD-RW).

And how can something be useful if it doesn't yet exist?

Getting back on topic, I'd say that the imagination is pretty useful, though admittedly I'm not sure if someone has mentioned it yet...

In case someone has, I back it up with the skeleton: perhaps not nearly as useful, but it has its worth.

James Webb Space Telescope!

It is the replacement of the Hubble Space telescope and it is due to launch in 2011.

The thing that makes it really amazing though that it can see all the way to the edge of the current universe! No, I'm not kidding. There will be no reason to have a telescope any more powerful because there would be nothing more to see until the universe expands farther then it is right now. All telescopes after the James Webb will only be capable of sharper images, they won't be able to see any farther because there is nothing there.
