Missing pieces of Act 26 (spoilers, no doubt)

Sixfortyfive 03-11-2005 11:21 AM
Well, I *finally* got around to sitting through episodes 14-26 on DVD. Been so long since I watched the show, and I think I enjoy it more every time I see it. Smile

For those who own the official companion book, you'll no doubt have noticed the section in the end which contains the script for Act 26 in its entirety. It's preceeded by a statement proclaiming that "Now you'll know the truth of the Big-O" and contains periodical footnotes regarding some of the exchanges between Gordon and Angel, along with other miscellaneous tidbits. All in Japanese, unfortunately, so it's really hard to draw anything out of it.

What I didn't realize until today, though (or maybe I did notice this before and completely forgot about it XD), after dusting off my copy and struggling to follow along the written script as I listened to the Japanese audio on the DVD, is that there is actually *more* information and lines written into the guidebook's version of the script than what actually ended up airing on TV! After Venus completes the "rewrite" or "reset" or "rewind" or whatever you'd like to call it, and after Paradigm City has been restored, the guidebook's script actually continues with a few short dialogues between Roger, Dorothy, Angel, Beck, and Dastun!

Now I've gotten all frustrated and caught up in this mess again. Did anybody ever look into translating this script? I'm wondering what else in here wasn't in the televised episode and why.

Back when I first started getting into Anime I was watching Star Blazers (aka Space Cruiser Yamato). I had a companion book as well and of course, it was in Japanese. Also, back in the "old days" Big Grin there was no "Web" so I had to resort to BBS's for my internet digging for info. I was directed to a local community college and the "Beginning Japanese - 101" course and it was mentioned that possibly a few students, whom took the course due to watching anime themselves, could translate the book for me. I never got too far with this process though as work just started for me and I got tied up.

So, possibly a local college that has a Japanese course would have some students willing to do some "extra credit" work would be able to translate this for us. Just an idea! Pleased

Gee!
Why does this always happen....
Just when I think I have it down...
Someone unEarth's something new..

*Rolls back up onto feet.*
Perhaps the reason is, is that it couldn't fit into the time alloted for the American episode. In Japan I guess they don't air commercials, hence the time clock in the corner of most of the Japanese screen shots.
Maybe the episode was supposed to be longer, but it wouldn't fit into the half hour of Big O in America, and not enough animation, to make another episode....
*Nods.*

Well, my best guess as to why that wasn't included would be time. The episode is already longer than average (with footage continuing into the credits). Another guess is that they decided to cut it so it could be put into a possible Season Three. Or both.

Or why didn't they include it as an extra for the Japanese DVD release. Shoot, they edited and reanimated 'improvements' to the second season, why not add a few minutes to the episode for the DVD release? Or maybe a another audio drama?

Dude your so right, I swear to God that there is some dialogue missing from the last episode. And they showed it once, I remember Roger saying turn it off angel.....and something else when she is in that editing room. Anyone else have memories like that or am I going crazy?

I totally and completley agree. it wouldn't have been the first time something like that has happened, and it wouldn't have been the last.

If someone can get me some good scans of the Japanese text, I might be able to get it translated. (I know several people that speak Japanese) No promises though, I don't want to force them to translate it if they don't have time to do it... Frown

Great find, Sixfortyfive! I had heard rumors that the ending was changed at some point, so this most likely shows what they originally had in mind. I looked through the script and I can get a general idea of what's going on at the end, but all that kanji makes it hard for me to translate (since I have to look up each kanji that I don't already know, and I only know around 100 or so right now). I'll still try, but it will take a while.

I would gladly send you the scans, but my scanner no longer works... Mad

This is very intriguing. I would be upmost interested to see how this turns out.

I am also studying Japanese and I could request my professor, whom is Japanese and is nonetheless extremely fluent, to translate it for us. I have no doubt that she would not mind. Smile

If you're gonna get somebody else to translate it, it might be a good idea to single out only those parts of the guidebook that were omitted in the episode. Since I assume a few of you guys are familiar with Kana, it shouldn't be too hard to listen to the DVD and follow along. I didn't go through the whole episode, but most of the spoken lines seemed to be verbatim with the text in the script.

I might do this myself next week, if for no other reason than that I have nothing better to do. Smile

Remind me again why we didn't do this a year ago.....

We floated the idea of getting somebody to translate it, but I don't think anybody really followed up on it. I was particularly interested in the supplimental footnotes, but there weren't a whole lot of them.

Didn't realize at the time that the script itself had extra passages.
Krang 03-13-2005 12:49 AM
Good news! Through a little searching, I found an online version of the last scene in that script on a Japanese message board, which should make it much easier for me to look up the kanji and translate. I'll post the full version when I'm done, but so far I know that it takes place in an abandoned factory with Beck present (sound familiar? Wink ).

Good idea, there might be more than just the last scene that didn't make it into the episode. The "narration" text might be interesting to see for some of the more confusing parts, also.

Ok, I attached my translation of the original last scene of Act 26 from the script. Judging by the dialog, this scene takes place instead of the one with Roger driving in the Griffon rather than after it. If anyone else with knowledge of Japanese wants to double-check my work, feel free. Also, as the document says, please don't copy and paste this translation or transliteration elsewhere.
A Clockwork Tomato 03-13-2005 08:09 AM
Interesting. Thanks, Krang!

Another cycles-with-variations ending, but this one implies that only Roger and Angel remember anything about what happened. (Having Dorothy not remember is an awfully cheap trick; very unsatisfying. And having Dastun and Beck revert to their earlier forms, losing all that character growth -- didn't Roger and Angel listen to Roger's speech at the end?)
Tickle Tickle 03-13-2005 09:47 AM
Interesting! I have to say, I prefer this scene over the one we got in the end. Damn, I wish this was on extra on the DVD. Rats.
