why is it that movie theaters are soo expensive these days?

R and D 01-07-2005 09:50 AM
i ask people about the unforunate movie and they said it was good. but they also told me that the price went up too! 6.00 not to mention how much a drink and snacks cost. Shocked granted there are some movie theaters out there that cost less but it takes forever for them to get the movie you want to see. is this insaness?! what is the world coming too?! 6.00 dollars for a movie?! God, help me. *sighs*
Almasy 01-07-2005 10:38 AM
At the movie theater I go to it's at least $9 (or more, depending on the time of day, etc.). And I know that it's even more expensive than that in other places.

Everything goes up in price overtime, so I guess it's just natural.
Travis Bickle 01-07-2005 10:51 AM
At home, it's $9.50, so my friends and I just get a high quality pirated version and watch it on my friend Jeremy's 1337 home theater system.

At college, it's $7, but we rarely go, because we watch everything before they come out thanks to piracy.

Down here (West Palm Beach), it's around $8. However, if you have your student ID, you get in for $5, so it's pretty badass.
noTomato 01-07-2005 12:04 PM
here: between $5 and $6, but we have a lot of friends that work at the theater, although I still haven't used my free ticket yet. And I don't bother buying snacks there, screw that. One time, my friends bought chick-fil-a before we went to see Xmen 2 and I hid all the food in my backpack, including the large lemonade.

(I hated when our theater took Team America out after only 2 weeks. That's such crap! So, a bunch of people bought the bootleg when our band went to New York.)

Sorry to hear that. The boolegs in New York have always sucked.
StevieV019 01-07-2005 12:32 PM
Snacks are the ridiculous part...and what more can I ask for except a girlfriend that always requires an f-ing soda everytime we go to the movies. (sorry for the rant...you cant last 2 hours without a drink??)

The price has gone up, I remember when movies were only $3.50 a ticket, and matinees were 0.99 cents.

Inflation, yep, it raises everything...
BethMcBeth 01-07-2005 12:56 PM
Yes I know thats just insane I know that sometimes if you go to the matanees (sp?) around like 4:00ish or so they are cheaper and a good trick to use is also wip out your student id card sometimes that knocks off a buck or two.

Sometimes also if you wait a while like a few weeks after the movie hits the theatures its not as popular so you can go for cheaper or sometimes.

Anotehr good trick I use is if you want to knock off another buck or so don't go to the top of the line theartures because all your paying extra for is a more spacious seat. I mean yes they are nice but heck I would ratehr have that extra buck or so for something later instead of a better seat! ^_~" Thst just me thoguh!

Movie tickets are expensive so the studios can pay their star's salaries.

Personally, I'll only go to matinee showings (at the theater in my town, admission was once $4.50. Now it's $6.00 Shocked ) and I never buy snacks or soda. When my brother and I were younger, we used to sneak them under our coats, but I don't do that anymore. With the money I'm paying for those tickets, the film gets my full attention! Wink
Zopwx2 01-07-2005 08:42 PM
Yeah its 9$ bucks down here, you can try to work in some student discounts... matinees, and smaller theatres and I can get it down to 5.

But yeah.......and then the have the nerve to show you FREAKIN COMMERCIALS!!!

(I'm talking about the ads not the trailers, trailers are awesome)
Mugiwara Luffy 01-07-2005 09:47 PM
Yeah it's pretty ridiculous...I went to a matinee the other day, which was supposed to be cheap, but it cost $6!! And then they go and charge you 27 million dollars for a small drink and small popcorn. Grrrrr....
pen1300 01-08-2005 10:59 AM
Last I remember (which was last summer), matinees cost about $5.00. I'm starting to wonder if prices went up. I know it'd cost us an arm and a leg for just one soda and popcorn (but we got a medium for three of us). Then my brother decided he had to have nachos every time.

None the less, my school has this nifty movie thing where they rent the movie before it officially comes out and play it for free on Thursday night, and twice on Sunday. They have this Auditorium in the student building, with a good sized screen (not as big as a movie, but not as small as a big screen TV), and they play the movie that way. That's how I've been seeing my movies lately! I can't wait to see this term's lineup! I saw Team America will be up in a few weeks! I just hope I can find time to make it to more this time...

So, that's how I got around that little problem. It's free (on the other side of campus Sweatdrop ), usually movies that are out of the theaters but not on DVD yet, and you can sneak in snacks, or go to the store right there and blatantly ignore the sign that says "No food or drinks." LOL

We have the same thing in our school, only it costs $1 to get in. I saw the Village there with friends a couple of weeks before finals.

The last movie I ever went to was I robot. Boy was my mom ticked off. Because she called up the theatre to ask for times. And they said that that day was a special price and something like two or more for the price of one. So we end up going there and find out they lied. It cost her two adult tickets. wich combined was like $30.00. She ranted about this to the teller. and he was just like "That price is only one weekends." And she was angry, because he had to use the money that we were going to use to get food after the movie.

In short The prices are just way to high. If you want to see a movie, you have to wait for the DVD. But then that is even to high. It's like the world now is just revolving around money, money, money! And it shouldn't be. That's not the way it should be anyway. It's like if you don't work at a high paying job or you are not the boss/ower of a company that is staring to go under or don't have the money, you can't see the show that simple! And that's just wrong.
Avenir 01-08-2005 04:23 PM
It's disappointing really, considering how thirty years ago movie admissions were as low as $0.25. Sign of the times, I suppose.

The theaters around here charge about $10 for a regular show. Going to matinees is like venturing out into a Christmas crowd; it's ridiculous. The concession prices are pretty high as well, but they don't usually bother me.
Almasy 01-08-2005 04:43 PM
When I go to the movies I never really bother getting any drinks or snacks.

It's not so much the price factor as it is the fact I'm usually going out to dinner after the movie, or coming to the movies after just having lunch! Big Grin

Back in the day, my dad bought There's Something About Mary from some guy on 32nd street. It ended up being some softcore porno movie. Never trust New York street vendors when it comes to buying cds and movies.
Mike 01-08-2005 08:32 PM
I'm pretty sure the Spiderman 2 my dad got from eBay is a bootleg. There isn't a picture on the disc, and it has no special features, and the box image is different.
R and D 01-10-2005 09:45 AM
it used to be four dollars in my town. but they raised it to 2 dollars. stupid movie greedy people. Sweatdrop
xana_fae 01-12-2005 01:41 PM
well I don't know I really don't like going to the movies all that much...I'd rather rent or buy a movie, make my own popcorn, and be able to cuddle with someone under a nice soft blanket, and be able to stop the movie when ever I want to and go pee or what not....than pay for a movie that I have to sit threw with other people who are being rude or talking or who are sucking face!!! WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU SPEND 6 BUCKS JUST SO YOU CAN MAKE OUT!!! That makes no sence to me!!!
But anywho....movies cost too darn much
