About a month ago, I was scaning an older issue of Animerica, when I came upon an ad for Descendants of Darkness (By Yoko Matsushita-san). I thought at first, 'The covers so plain! They cut it short too!' But looking at the small summery provided, it show'd a plot I thought I might like to look into. So, that Friday, I went to my local Walden and picked up the first volume.
I do believe I've fallen in love with this manga. The basic summery is, a "Guardian of Death" or Shinigami patrol the world, sending souls that refuse to move on to the after-life. You follow Asato Tsuzuki-kun*, one of the best (if not weirder) Shinigami's. He seems to have...issues with keeping partners at the beginning. After a touching first chapter, that's remidied with the arrival of Kurosaki Hisoka-kun, Tsuzuki-kun's new partner, who seems in it for the long haul. From start to finish the book maintans the perfect balance of funny and serious. I seriously began to regreat purchasing it with only the first volume out. One thing this series taught me, waiting sucks.
On Friday, our VOD (Video on Demand) service was re-instated. To my utter joy (at the time) I saw a Descendants of Darkness anime. I hate to be blunt but... it blows.
Let me explain myself. Lets start with the voice acting. Tsuzuki-kun's voice was done by none other than Dan Green. For those of you who don't know, Dan Green also does the voice acting for Yugi/Yami in the Yu-Gi-Oh series. Now, as fun as it may have been to hear Yugi/Yami swearing at the top of his lungs, the voice just didn't match the character at all. I think Steve Blum might have been a better match...
Then there's the voice actor for Yutaka Watari-san, the computer wiz. Eric Stuart plays him. Now, don't get me wrong, I have absolutely no problems with Eric Stuart. I do, however, have a problem with the voice he uses for James in the Pokemon dub. He uses the exact same voice, all the way down to the fake British accent, for Watari-san. (I think the team for this anime made some kind of sick deal with 4Kids...)
They were some redeming qualities of this anime. The opening sequence was one of the high points of this series. The song was very likable and the animation was picked well. I wish I could say the same for the closing...except there wasn't one. What I mean to say is, there was no music, no animation, no nothing. It was simply a list of the English and Japanese cast and crew.
Not only did that make it seem that they tried hard to make this a good dub. I can't say I enjoyed it at all. All I can say is I hope the manga progresses better than the anime.
Thought? Comments? (Condolences?
)
