Yes, all Windows files should be rolled back to their SP1 versions. Or, if you want, you could try reinstalling SP2 instead to see if it helps solve the problem.

When you double-click on the files, do they open in the correct program? If so, the file that they are getting the icons from is probably corrupt. If not, the file associations were changed. You can change them back by running the program you want them to open with and looking in the options for File Associations.

My best guess is that another program is using the clipboard, causing you to not be able to paste the correct file/text/image. The only way to solve this would be to look into what programs are running in the background, and see if you can shut off any unnecessary ones.

What happened when your computer messed up? Was it a hardware or a software problem? In the meantime, try scanning your hard drive for errors (right-click the drive > Properties > Tools > Check Now). Also, look in the device manager (Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager) and see if there are any conflicts.

The weird thing is...the only icons that don't come up are those for JPG and BMP. I always had icons for then until now. Those files I used for an example are JPGs, so they usualy open in windows fax viewer. I guess that's the right program....But wouldn't the file that has the icons for JPG/BMP be the same as the icons for gif/PNG? because that icon works for some reason.

I looked in services and all of them seem to be ones that are active, are the ones that I would think are suposed to be there. But another strange thing is....I don't have windows messenger, but still the icon for it appears on my taskbar....and that thing came up and said the file for it crashed, but I never used it so...why is it there? It's not even on ad remove programs so I can't really uninstall it eather.....what's going on with that thing? Could that be running in the background and I just don't know it?

That is a little strange... Try opening Windows Explorer from Start Menu > Accessories, then click Folder Options on the Tools menu. Go to the File Types tab, and you'll be able to check which icons are being used there. To make JPGs use the same icon as GIFs, copy the icon entry from GIF to JPG.

In addition to services, also check the Task Manager (right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager).

Actually, Windows Messenger is installed by default and is intentionally made hard to uninstall. To remove it, go to Start Menu > Run, and enter this command:

code:
1:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Don't worry if you get an error, it will still uninstall Messenger.

As long as you have a free PCI slot, you can use pretty much any modem out there. Here's a good place to start to see what's available and at what price, and I would also recommend looking at various review sites to get a second opinion.

I have. It's alright for the most part; it does what it's suppose to do. Although, I'll stick with Ad-Aware and Spybot, seeing as sometimes, that program would update without me knowing, so...

Overall, it's a pretty good program, but what I have is good enough. Smile

I haven't check its progress since then, but it served its purpose when it comes to spyware, so there weren't any problems when I used it. Try using different spyware programs and see which one does the best job for you. Smile

For those interested in testing out the beta, you can check it out here:

For some reason, my pc has not froze for two weeks. Kick ass. This is a first time in 9 months that this has happened.

I hope it keeps up.

Well I've been really getting into HTML lately and I was just wondering if there was a way to well... insted of putting the text you want in a table in te actual code. Is there a tag to refrence to a text file so that shows up on the website?

There isn't a way to do that with HTML itself, but there are two common methods of doing this through server-side scripting languages:
  1. If your server supports PHP, change the file extension from .html to .php. Then, in the place that you want to include the text file, add this line:
    code:
    1:

    <?php include("file.txt"); ?>
where "file.txt" is the text file that you want to include.

  2. If your server supports SSI (server-side includes), change the file extension from .html to .shtml. Then, in the place that you want to include the text file, add this line:
    code:
    1:

    <!--#include virtual="file.txt" -->
where "file.txt" is the text file that you want to include.
Both of these methods do the exact same thing, so feel free to use whichever you prefer (and whichever your server supports).

I've recently been having troube connecting to various sites.

I have to try 2 to 4 times to connect to sites like Google, or Hotmail. I'm not really sure what's causing this, because I'm not running any new programs at all. I suppose it could be a problem on my internet provider's side...

Yep, it sounds like a problem with your ISP. If you have another computer, though, you can double check by connecting it to the internet through the same connection and seeing if the problem is still there.

Ah, that I do not have. Any other ways to test it?
Krang 04-06-2005 12:04 AM
If you know of anyone else in the area that uses the same ISP, you could ask them. Other than that, you'll need to check with your ISP to see if they can solve the problem on their end.

I looked on the internet, and talked to my computer savy friend, but I can't figure out what's wrong.

First, the 'Backstory'

I just got a BFG GeForce 6600 GT graphics card yesterday. Put it in, works like a charm. Games look better than ever, and I can actually play KOTOR II. However, today I was playing it, and my computer crashed. I restart, go back in, but the game is all Staticy. It is distorted. Just to make sure it isn't that game, I open another game, and it too is all staticy. So, I figure I'd just reinstall the drivers from the CD it came with. That didn't work. So I then figure I'd go to their site and get new drivers. Still does not work.

Now, everything outside the games are ok. No distortion whatsoever. So, anyone got any idea what I do?

And, a side question. That graphics card is the first one I got that has a fan on it. So, I guess it gets pretty hot. And, I have noticed it. The temperature of my computer is high. I go to the 'DELETE' setup thing when I boot windows, and the temperatures are all below what it says it will shut down for. It shuts down at 120 degrees F, and it has been around 105-116 degrees F.

Is that bad? (Yeah, I ain't too good with computers Tongue )
Dude Love 04-06-2005 10:49 PM
Well, that's pretty warm, I think. You'd probably be wise to get another cooling fan in there, somewhere. A temporary solution could be to operate with the case open, as long as you won't get anything in there. That will open up a lot of ventilation.

I agree with Wienberg that you should definitely look into adding an additional fan to the case. That actually may be the cause of your problem, since components start to malfunction when the heat inside the case gets to be too much. Other things you could try would be to check the connection between the card and your monitor, and updating DirectX to the latest version (check Windows Update for that). Also, when updating your drivers, be sure to completely remove the old ones before installing the new ones (you may need to temporarily use the standard VGA drivers while reinstalling the new drivers).

Thank you for your help. I am going to take that Graphics card back, since I updated and uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, and still no luck. When I go, I'll get another fan too, and find somewhere to put it. I guess I could cut out a hole of the case, and put it there, right? Or is it something else I have to do?

I realized I didn't tell the story of the graphics cards I dealt with.

First time I bought a card, about 2 or 3 Christmasses ago, I got a Radeon 9000. I knew nothing of cards. I just got one and it fit and worked.

Then, when I actually have the "knowledge" to get one, I have bad luck. (Knowledge in quotes because, as you read, I would have been better not even knowing anything and taking my chances...)

I was told, at Frys Electronics, that the computer I got there, which is a Frys Computer, that the GeForce 6600 card would not work. He said I had an AGP slot only, and not a PCI express.

So I get a Radeon 9800, and guess what? No AGP slot. So, I get the computer Savy friend of mine to identify the slots. I got 5 PCI and 1 PCI Express slots. So yeah, I get angry. But luckily they take it back with no problem.

I get this one. Works fine, until it 'up and died' on me. So, with a little bit of luck, third time will be the charm.

And if it isn't, watch the news for a crazy kid who proceeded to destroy every Graphics Card at a Bay Area computer store. Tongue

Good idea, it seemed more like a hardware problem, so replacing the card should solve it.

First, make sure that you have at least two case fans, one as an intake fan (usually in the front) and one as an exhaust fan (usually in the back). If you already have those and there are no more ports in the front or back for fans, then yes, you'll probably need to cut a hole in the side of the case and install the fan there.
